Huge Copper Log

  • Copper-mineralized fossil wood. Chalcocite is Cu2S, so it is mostly Copper by weight. Copper is 558 lb/cubic foot. This thing is incredibly heavy. This is one of the largest intact logs recovered. From Sandoval County New Mexico USA. Nacimiento.

    So i need more details 😂 is that a fossilized log that got replaced by copper minerals?

      Yes. Almost entirely replaced by Chalcocite, which is Cu2S. More in the description above. The plant matter is around 260 million years old. It lived and died on the continent of Pangea, some 6,000 miles of continental drift away from where we dug it up in New Mexico. It is very dense. Quite a workout to move any, let alone one this size. I don't generally take naps, but I took one after we got that sucker back to the rig.
