    I want to add my spin on your theory about the title. I loved your idea about that since Shang Xirui is a man playing a woman he does not have a flower in his hair. I think a running theme in winter begonia is “life or opera.” When Commander Cao asks Xirui if he would choose life or opera, Xirui chooses opera. However, when Cheng Fengtai asks Xirui the same question at the end, we do not get an answer. The ending scene can be interpreted in many ways, but the flashbacks all somehow relate to Xirui’s life outside of opera. I think Cheng Fengtai showed Shang Xirui that life outside of opera can be quite interesting, that true friendship exists, and that his life is worth more than he values it at (the scene where they drink after Xirui looses his hearing, Fengtai says that nothing is more important than Xirui’s life, not even opera). So, I think the title also represents Shang Xirui’s life outside of the opera and the value that he holds as a person as these are the times when Xirui wears simple clothes and no flowers or other accessories. So to sum up, whether you think Xirui chooses life or chooses opera, in the end, there can be no doubt that he values his life “without a red flower” more than he once did.

      I love your theory, I think it explains my theory on the meaning of the title. "The Temple Sides are not Begonia Red", I think begonia red refers to the eyes make-up that go up to the temple sides for opera performances, not the flower. When I thought about the title, I couldn't make sense of it. Your theory does it for me.

    • @md2928
      @md2928 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lidya Angelia Actually, now that I think about it, it makes more sense to say that begonia refers to the color of the makeup instead of the actual flower, and this theory can accommodate the change. So basically, if there is no makeup, there is life outside of opera. :-)

    The opera performer in the bilibili link is actually the actor who acted as the young ning jiu lang. I think he was also expert consultant on opera for the drama. I saw him several times in the drama behind the scenes.

      I think he's also the double for the opera performances. I think I could recognize him doing the feather dance from the upper shot. He probably did the fairy foot dance too

    wow! what a fascinating and interesting explanation of Beijing Opera that you have shared with us! Thank you so much! My encounter with Operas, was in my teenage years in the 60s when my mom and I would go watch the street Operas, mostly in the dialect of zhou chou (Teochew), without understanding much of the plot but I was mesmerised by the costumes and the performance and singing! My mom would tell me the story and plot that was mostly based on the history of ancient China. I remembered having been to see one very famous troupe that came from HongKong to perform and the audience did throw money up on to the stage like what you said!! Those were the good old days of Opera in my birth country but now sadly do not exist anymore! Looking forward to listening to the Part 2!

    Thanks for all the effort you must have put into this video!I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.It helps to understand whats going on,even tho the sounds,costumes,and dancing are enough on their own.You continue to amaze me! When I first watched one of your lecture-type videos,I thought that you had written it out previously and either were using notes or had memorized it.I now suspect that you study the material and then give a great lecture extemporaneously.I also suspect that you have a photographic memory,which combined with your exceptional reasoning ability,makes for a powerful combination.I do not ever want to get in an argument with you! Make l;ove not war!

    I haven’t finished the series yet, (little less than half way) and definitely don’t know much about Peking Opera, but what the title and reference sounds like to me is, Shang Xi Rui is similar to the hostess in that someone more powerful is telling them how to be, but they refuse to be goaded or owned by someone with more power. They know who they are, what they want, and their own convictions, they will not be simply pretty for someone else. So no, Shang Xi Rui will not put the flower in his hair.

    May I ask a question?...may be loosely related to the topic of opera...
    In "killer and healer" and in "hot blooded youth" ther is a powerful man "holding" an opera singer as "guest"...almost against his will...
    Is this a literary topos?
    Thank you....your explanation are amzing and you are so knowledgeable!
