I don't think the average investor can wrap their heads around how complex and expensive it is to make the kind of chips he is talking about
100% Agree 👍 - I believe they are so stand offish from it right now that they think it's just a glorified Google search.
The change comes when they have thier ah ha moment and the models aren't so restricted as they are now. And they are really downgraded from mid last year. More features less computation power.

Intel latest mobile CPU(Meteor Lake) uses TSMC for 3 of 4 tiles. Chip independence? You first, Pat!
How many of the fabs are finished? Most are under construction?
Well Meteor lake is an interim product before the big launch of Intel 18 A by the end of the year.
Same goes with Arrow Lake.
Lunar and Beast lake will be the processors to watch out for in terms of what will actually be the high end products on high end Intel nodes.
Chip development takes 6 years from start to production. Meteor Lake was started under his predecessor so that’s where the TSMC commitment came from. Also Intel isn’t building large capacity for these interim nodes. 18A is where Intel will be high volume.

Intel is still lowly valued compared to where it will be at the end of its transformation into also being an open chip foundry. Get on board and hold through 2026.

The software people will write software including OS that will only work on computers with NPUs. We will all go out and buy new computers to run the new OS and buy new software. Everybody wins, except the customer.

'Die Hunde bellen, aber die Karawane zieht weiter' besonders die Fragen der männlichen Interviewer wieder typisch - fast wie nach der Qualität der eigenen Keule, 'wie gross, wie schnell, wie mein, wie unabhängig und ganz alleine zu handhaben', gegen 'den Gegner' natürlich
Dabei hatte er die Antwort an anderer Stelle im Prinzip doch schon längst gegeben: A. Das Produkt verdoppelt seine Fähigkeiten alle drei Jahre(1), B. Die anderen können es nutzen, aber nicht nachbauen (und auch der Prozess entwickelt sich in einem konzentrierten Fähigkeits- und IQ-Haufen wie Intel schneller weiter, als die von Außen aufschließen können.)(2)
(Und Muster zum Zerlegen kann sich jeder beschaffen, oder als Spion bei Intel in der Produktion oder R&D arbeiten.)
1 - Die 'inconsistancy of politics' drückt ja genau das aus, auch die politisch über Regulierung Entscheidenden sind oft von der Schnelligkeit und Komplexität der Sache überfordert, wie er argumentiert, mit dem Gegenvorwurf nämlich, war also richtig und klug, Hut ab! Bei einer Faehigkeitsverdopplung alle drei Jahre reicht ja eine Zeitverzögerung von zwei Jahren bis zum Wettbewerber - es braucht aber keinen Iron Curtain'(3)
2 - Ich habe einen selbstentwickelten Hightech Backherd und backe weltbeste Kuchen nach feinstem Rezept in ihm (und dazu kauft der weltbesten Rohstoffe) - und zwischen jeweils neuestem Ofen und bestem Rezept und Produkt besteht eine Wechselwirkung. Und jetzt kommt einer und fängt neu an, mit allem drei, Herd, Kuchen, Wechselwirkung.

3 - It's more fun to compete - die wohl so kommend geplante Weltordnung alter NATO und US Kräfte ist nicht erstrebenswert. Die USA muß sich dem Wettbewerb weiter stellen - und weiter gewinnen. Nur der siegreich gewonnene Wettbewerb hält uns weiter vorne, nicht das Monopol hinter der Mauer machtgeschützter Innerlichkeit. Nur der Rentner, nach siegreich geschlagenen Lebenskampf, sitzt im Altersheim hinter der Mauer und guckt aus dem Fenster - zurück.

Ich finde man muss das einfach nur mit Pat Gelsinger zu Ende denken - eine vollständige Zerstörung Chinas in einem Krieg - oder zumindestens China so um Jahrzehnte zurückwerfen durch kriegerische Handlungen - nähme auch bei uns die Antriebsfeder zu weiterer Verbesserung weg - dann einfach so mehr oder minder sozial konstant im selben Pudding bleiben für immer - wollen wir das wirklich?
Dialektik: Die aktuelle Auseinandersetzung um die eurasische Platte, von Amerika teilweise mit geheimdienstlich-militärisch unterstützten spoiling-attacks gestaltet, zeigt genau genommen nur eines - die USA haben psychologisch die Auseinandersetzung um die friedliche Erreichung des Vorsprungs inzwischen längst verloren gegeben. Und China braucht daher diesem Konfliktfeld nur vollkommen konsequent, was auch immer Amerika tut, auszuweichen - und schon wird es binnen nicht mehr langer Zeit auf dem friedlichen Feld gewinnen - und damit die ganze Auseinandersetzung. (Und nicht nur Europa, sondern viele andere auch, werden auf die Seite des Siegers wechseln, das ist eben so.)
Karawane zieht von Oase zu Oase, bringt Waren und Glück, aber die Hunde bleiben zurück.
The AI computer is something to look forward to. I still believe in waiting to invest in the stock right away as the foundries are not yet completed and the market reaction to Intel's new CPU's and GPU's is yet to be determined. However, Pat Gelsinger is a very smart man and I believe he has a formidable plan. Now, all that remains to sees is the execution.

Pat Gelsinger attributes Intel's lag behind TSMC to adopting more advanced EUV later than TSMC, which is incorrect.
In 2017, TSMC did not use advanced EUV to develop 7-nanometer chips but instead used DUV. Samsung has invested heavily in taking the lead in using EUV to create 7-nanometer chips, announcing that Samsung's market share will reach 25% in 2022. As a result, Samsung's market share in the third quarter of 2023 was only 13%. TSMC's market share has grown from 50.6% in 2017 to 60% in the third quarter of 2023, and the gap between the two sides is getting broader.
China also did not use EUV in 2023 but completed the development of 7-nanometer chips.
Intel was the first to acquire High NA EUV last year and, in 2024, purchased 6 of all 10 High NA EUV machines produced by ASML.
TSMC has no plan to purchase High NA EUV for its 2nm chips manufacturing and has yet to make plans to acquire High NA EUV even before 2030.
Intel's purchase of state-of-the-art equipment in ample quantities is the same as Samsung's intention in 2017. However, although advanced equipment is indispensable, it is not the most important.
It is true that EUV adoption is not the only factor, but without it producing advanced nodes at an efficient scale is very difficult.
Considering that Intel is still a yield monster, there is still some chance that it can recover through EUV adoption considering other factors are reasonably completed.
