- McVicar is Roger Daltrey's fourth solo album, and also the soundtrack album of McVicar, the film of the same name. It also has all of the members on the Who playing on the album, with Kenney Jones on drums.
The album was released in June, 1980.
The album reached #22 in the US charts and #39 in the UK charts.
I can't believe this song doesn't get more credit, such a very underrated song and Roger's vocals are blistering on this song.
And it’s about fighting against the establishment
Written by Russ Ballard
Yes!! I've always loved it!!
Big track hey bro like the film
Totally agree
Killer forgotten about tune. I was jammin to this in 1980 at 14...and still am at 55! Born a rocker... die a rocker!!
What a great voice Roger Daltrey has on this great song, the hairs on my neck have just stood up listening to this.
yes, these are early mtv memories for me
The best Roger Daltry the best x
We all wish we were together!!!
I don't think many people would know this if they ain't seen mcvicar ? Certainly how I first heard it
I waited 9 months to see that film 🎥 back in 1980 it was well worth the wait .
Everything about this movie is superb
Sir Roger Daltrey has "The voice of anger"... he screams attitude and everyone in the whole galaxy must feel that he IS serious and dangerous. Pure perfection in it´s true form.
One of my all time favourite films worth buying just for this song
I went to the flicks to watch this film when it first came out with Roger Daltrey he was great as McVicar
Susan Stephenson
Deserved an oscar
Remember this film being at the Romford odeon for ages. Was too young to watch it back then.
Still a great album even for 2021
The mans a legend pure rock.named my son after him..rock on
👍
You named your son Tommy??
Written by one of rock's greatest hit-makers: Russ Ballard.
Love this song....Roger Daltrey is awesome !
Peaked as high as No. 53 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Charts in 1980. Should’ve been a MUCH bigger hit.
Love his power and timeless voice.
My dad used to play this when I was about 5 I loved this album. Will always love Roger and The Who.
Still listening to this in 2020. More than ever now due to this pandemic.
This raw power is just overwhelming. Always coming back when i have to free myself from being incarcerated. You can feel his pure emotion in every single word.
That’s scream at the end… Hair raising! Just like “won’t get fooled again”!
Cant avoid that massive John Entwistle bass tone!
One of my favorite songs. Daltrey was on 🔥
Sung like flesh and bone is his prison. A voice beyond mortals.
ONE OF MY PERSONAL MOST FAVORITE FILMS & SOUNDTRACKS
Christopher Green
Totally agree with you there mate. Absolute classic it brings back so many good memories 😊
Came back to UK just after the riots in 1981 and eveyone involved I knew was listening to this album. the working class are entitled to take back everything robbed from them by the rich English public school scumbags who run our country. McVicar did what he had to do to survive without ever grassing or selling out. He was a working class hero and so is R Daltrey
How about "Cerrone" Je Suis Music? Listen to it!
Don't you think your comments are noted by the powers that be?
Exactly, roger couldn't beat the system.. ever.
Fuck the powers that be, (note this for a comment)
Richard Low amen brother!

The jail scenes were brilliant
Maybe it’s because I am a Londoner
THE FILM IS FANTASTIC
Pure passion....
This song is so appropriate for the restrictions placed on humanity because of the Covid...can’t wait till normalcy. Hope all the best during these challengingly months!!
go the fuck out
This is the dumbest shit I’ve ever read.
If you allow restrictions to be placed on you than you have no business liking this song and are a pussy...Fight the power like McVicar and be a part in changing the world.
One of my favourite songs
What a great song Roger sings it from the very heart 💙
One of my all time favorites if not at the top of the list

Много яка музика от филма Маквикар.Даваха го в България по кината,когато бяхме ученици някъде през седемдесетте.
Good song from a good movie. Daltrey is quite the actor too.
Don Fraysier Loved him in "the Legacy". I was just thinking about that.
+Don Fraysier loved this movie

The film was partly filmed in HMP Durham, where the Yorkshire Ripper died today 13th Nov 2020.
Free me
Can't you hear that's what I say
Free me
Anyhow or anyway
I hear a voice
Call in the night
Push on the brain
Fades with the light
And I've seen a face
With so many eyes
Out in the words
Know there lies
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Free me, free me
Inside I'm bleeding, can't you see
Free me
From all this pain and misery
I am a flame
But he held the fire
Call me a fool
Don't call me a liar
Take me to hell
And let me stay
Get back some prize
Well, I have to pay
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Free me
I lie awake
Burning inside
No where to run
And no where to hide
Old lady time
She's no friend to me
I feel her change
And she holds the key
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Can't you hear me say
Free me, free me
Can't you hear that's what I say
Free me
Anyhow or anyway
Your lyrics are off in places:
Correct lyrics: "I hear their words/knowing they're lies" "take me to hell and let me stay/if that's the price I have to pay." "I feel her chains (not change)/and she holds the key."
Hope this helps.
Awesome singer!
Love the song ❤️ love the film ❤️ I played free me for many years when I was banged up
I’m 23 and I fucking love this track wow shame I couldn’t find it on Apple Music 🎵
Same, can’t find on Spotify
Watch the film jeez it’s a classic
Watch Mcvicar you won't regret it, one of the best films and soundtracks ever made 🔥🙌👏💖
good film and great song
This wouldn't sound out of place on any of the best Who albums
Maybe so. But I can't imagine Pete Townshend writing a lyric like "Take me to Hell, and let me stay. If that's the price, that I have to pay." John Entwistle, yes. But not Pete.
@@ter521fad Youre probably right but the point is still valid. Some of Johns songs got onto their albums as well.
Yeah and thematically it could have been an easy fit for either Tommy or their mod opera.
This should be on a Who album
Pete, John, Kenney, and Rabbit actually played on this album
What a Great Song and Vocal Performance by Daltrey.
What a voice!!
Daltry is/was very talented ... good actor in McVicar and Highlander series

Went to the movie 1980 with my 2 uncles great cult classic
Classic tune and true story..
Roger joined by Thunder Fingers John Entwistle on bass guitar and drums by Stuart Elliott.
The best WHO song ever.
What a voice
Seen this film when it came out many years ago, love the soundtrack 😎
Christ, what a vocal performance! Daltrey just sings the Dickens out of it.
and they managed to get a great Memphis-style horns sound in there as well (alternating with the stylistic sweep of "Live and Let Die "'s orchestral approach) .
2022 and still amazing brilliant film brilliant voice and fucking brilliant song
In my Daltrey playlist, of course! Thanks for the upload~

Summer, 1980...omg...good times
McVicar turned out to be a better Who album than Face Dances and It's Hard!
Eminence front makes its hard
