This should be played at the end of a thriller. Just imagine the detective closing the documents of the crime and going for a walk on San Francisco Bay smoking a cigarette in the autumnal fog
"And, because of powers beyond my department, powers that influence my department, and powers influenced by my department, the case was closed. Forgotten. That was, that..."

OH MY GOD MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY THIS VERSION IS LIKE SOMETHING U WOULD LISTEN TO WHEN THE WORLD ENDS "i could leave today" and "when i got down on my knees and i began to pray" also "california dreaming" just like ur remembering the old days under the california sun etc
I've been driving in my 1969 green ford down a worn highway. Once alive with crowds trying to get glimpses of California now only used to transport drugs and firemen. I sigh thinking about its glory days, when my family drove for hours and I sat eagerly in the bed of truck trying to get a view of the golden city. My thoughts are interrupted when I stop at a familiar gas station, I walk inside, the store once a gleaming white now a filthy cream and the floors once a vibrant black and white now faded and scuffed from all the foot traffic. I walk up to the counter and lay a twenty dollar bill on the counter and sigh "One pack of Camels". Then man nods taking me my money and handing me my pack of cigarettes and my change. I thought as I walked to my car about how I would dig my hand into the candy jar at the register and buy as many bazooka joes as I could with my fifty cents. I start to fill up my cars tank, it was the same rusty machine they had when I was a kid. I chuckled feeding it my money and day dreaming about the packed highway, the warm sun, and the excitement of it all. I pull the gas nozzle out of gas cans knowing I wouldn't stop at another gas station for a while. I put my gas cans in the truck bed reminding me of my old man. I drag my cigarettes and open the door to my car and drove off into the orange sun California Dreamin'
@Hypercube87 im probably late but these people who replied are probably southerners who've never actually been to socal lol. I've been living here 11 years in the suburbs (with a very middle class, immigrant family) and i've never seen human feces on the streets, don't have the plague, and don't even have a lot of money. Even the city rarely has gross conditions, and if they do they're always in parts of the city you probably wouldnt want to live in in the first place lol
The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.
Yeah, most people think of Vietnam because the war and the song's release were close to each other, but it just reminds me so much of soldiers running through no man's land directly into their deaths
Inflation is sky rocketting, the government won't increase our wages and are trying to make industrial action illegal, they won't tax energy companies instead they keep increasing the tax on the working class, we have a Home Secretary that dehumanises immigrants, our National Health Service hasn't been funded at all for over a decade and anyone who isn't a millionaire is being affected by the mess that this government have caused
I love the slow pace gives it a noire vibe and a hint of bitter sweet sadness
