    A determined elephant successfully fought off a group of rhinos to enjoy a snack.
    Suzanne Boswell, 42, a member of Vetpaw (Veterans Empowered To Protect African Wildlife), snapped the footage at the Limpopo province in South Africa.
    A group of onlookers witnessed the animals squaring up to eat a bunch of grass during a drought.
    The elephant threw dirt, sticks, and even charged at the rhinos before they eventually fled the scene.

    Interactions like this are incredibly cool to see. You've got the two largest living land animals, and while there is a substantial gap in size and strength, the intellectual gap is even wider. The elephant could just push in there and overpower the rhinos physically, but he outsmarts them instead. When a rhino wants to posture and threaten, all it has to work with is its own body. The elephant can do that too, sure, but it can also go a step farther and use tools to intimidate. It throws dirt or sticks, and you can tell the rhinos just have no ability to comprehend that. They always look so surprised, like "What is this sorcery?!" This is one of those cases where brain really does dominate brawn.

    I would argue and debate anyone that the intelligence of an elephant in terms of strategy and survival rivals if not at times eclipses that of humans. Why? They live in the wild and obviously, only fight for survival. They don't have the petty human issues we worry about daily, looks, money, cars, beauty, etc. all that meaningless crap. If you know Elephant behavior, when they charge you ears out, it's full game mode, but you'll notice this bull never once actually trumpets, makes any noise, or shakes it's head which typically means GAME ON. So, he is already pretty chill, but still saying to the Rhino's, don't cross me mate or we'll have some problems. When they fight - they fight for the survival of themselves, their family and herd, and their futures. Elephants are also emotionally extremely intelligent, which means they know when they need to go all the way, and when not. Rhinos are incredibly intelligent as well, but they lack the family bond and team mentality that Elephants have. Very rarely if ever in nature will you see an Elephant KILL another unless it involves like I said, their HERD or their babies in the herds survival. Mostly, they use their massive body and small intimidation tactics that take care of most situations. They don't want to hurt anyone unless in certain situations. That is why you see the Elephants charge at you and then just stand there ears wide, trunk out trumpeting, kicking dirt, throwing sticks, because they are communicating to you, "I see you. You are a threat. I don't want to hurt you in any way, just go away and never approach me or my family again." I have seen Mother elephants kill to save their babies while the male bulls stood back. The Mother was actually far more scary in that moment because she was in ultra protective mode AND she had a UNIT OF BACKUP with the rest of the herd behind her. Rhino's are more one for all, and don't have that mentality. The Elephant knows who and what it is, so it can pick and choose it's battles. You don't walk with a swagger like all Elephants do unless you know you are a BOSS. I love Elephants. They won't hurt you as long as you respect them and who they are - the true kings of the wild.

    It has been proven - yes PROVEN, that Elephants understand sarcasm. They understand how being overly dramatic because that is what their enemies expect of them, can allow them to "fake them out" and do barely anything to scare them away. Hands down, one of the most brilliant creatures on earth. Elephants also have a wicked sense of humor and all kinds of personalities typically only seen in humans. When you see the bull kick the dirt, that was his way of saying, "Honestly punks, beat it..." - they didn't get the hint, so he up'ed it a bit more and tossed a stick at them, essentially using a tool to flick and scare them, it worked. He didn't want to hurt them, there were no babies around, he just wanted to flex and show the rhino's who is the boss. Trust me, Elephants are EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT, I would argue even more so than dolphins and apes. In evolution they said that when apes used tools, that is when they evolved into mankind. Well, right here you have an elephant using a tool in a simple way to survive, which means we vastly underestimate who they are and what they are capable of. Respect Elephants, protect them all now.

      Even those WITH horns pose little danger to a grown pachyderm. The animals can bleed out from an injury, but no Fully Grown Elephant is in jeopardy from most any animal at least during the day..

    You can tell he is in musth because of the tar-like temporal gland between the eye and ear.

    • @PattyPrescott
      @PattyPrescott 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for sharing that. I learned something new today. Musth
      Musth or must is a periodic condition in bull elephants characterized by highly aggressive behavior and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Testosterone levels in an elephant in musth can be on average 60 times greater than in the same elephant at other times. Wikipedia

    • @TheBiggestMooseEver2246
      @TheBiggestMooseEver2246 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't notice that. I guess even elephants in musth are intelligent enough to ward off rhinos and other animals without the need for violence.
