Would a new airport outside of the city center make you more willing to travel by air to or from Nicaragua? Who's looking forward to more distant international locations!?!?
The city said they are upgrading the highway to handle the new airport traffic but I personally would love to see a ferry from port Salvador Allende to Punta Huete to help move all that traffic
Awesome news especially for someone attracted to the mountain areas of Esteli and Matagalpa. Any Air BnB recommendations for Leon? Still finalizing my plans for February!
The Chinese have several projects planned/already begun in Nicaragua, including the airport, which will be the largest in Central America. All of these infrastructure projects are beneficial to the people and government of Nicaragua in one way or another, but their benefit to the creditors is where you need to look to see what gets done and in what order. The mining concession in the Pacific NW is barely talked about, but its effect will be enormous, including a planned rail connection from up there across Nica to the Pacific coast. That the new airport has room to expand in the coming years AND is on the side of Chinese concessions in Eastern Nica is not coincidence. The amount of important infrastructure programs is amazing, and will definitely help Nicaragua advance its economy.
i actually think it is coincidence. The rail link is totally based on the line that the americans tore out. there's no decisions on it. the bridges are there and it is leveled and clear. there are stations along it. none of it goes anywhere near mining regions. the belts and roads budget is old so unlikely to be connected. it's just lots of normal logical things happening independently. and most of the "coincidences" require extra information like an eastern railway that isn't actually in the works. it's only in the tourist area along the main residential highway. useless for mining.
What makes this new airport unique in the Americas, it's a project financed by China. China has already financed and built many airports in Asia and in Africa.
Good government, more work, more tourism, more investment will undoubtedly benefit greatly. Nicaragua is the most economical destination in Central America and is surrounded by natural beauty, lakes, beaches, volcanoes. The most important thing is that Nicaraguans are friendly and it is a very safe country.
That would be nice but seems incredibly unlikely. It's not a tourist center and does have connections by road now and they are investigating trains. So the airport will likely decrease in value rather than increase in iit. Given a lack of airports or airport upgrades in the major population centers, and the complete closure of the ones in the tourist centers, it would be an odd choice in my mind to upgrade.
After the construction or maybe in the middle of the construction of the airport do you believe that the nearest town San Francisco libre is going to have an improvement in the quantity of visitor and the cost of the houses etc?
Well right now there are like ten houses and they are worth nothing and there are zero visitors. So if ANYTHING happens, all those things will be true. But unless something major happens, no, it won't be affected. But our hope is that a few hotels (airport hotels) and restaurants pop up to service people going to or from the airport. That would be great. There is literally nothing at all there now, so every little thing will help. But where the airport is now is nothing but a couple airport hotels. Liberia airport is surrounded by nothing. Airports don't grow the area immediately around them much, only necessary support things like gas stations.
Generally towns are removed when an airport is built or expands. Look at Surfridge CA it was one of the wealthy beach cities of La. It was removed in order to expand the airport. Most people don’t want to live near a busy airport.
hey Scott. it would be nice if it is completed. do you know where financing is coming from (Nicaraguan, China)? Dont get too excited just because they broke ground. they broke ground on the Nicaragua canal too. Anyway, i wish you and the rest of Nicaragua luck!! 😊😊
You cant compare the mega budget of a 40 billion dollar canal to a 500 million dollar airport thats pennies for the chinese and Nicaragua can easily pay it back in less than five years
Nica has sold 465 million of gold to states in last 6 months. The government has granted million plus acres to Chinese in the automamus native zone for gold mining. Lots of gold to pay for it.

I don't think so. but it's possible. But if they reclaimed the space for the city, it could be great. If Managua grows like San Jose, the new airport will be "in the city" too. It's hard to believe that they will put in a new train to the old airport, and move the airport away from the tourist hubs.

In Nicaragua, the demand for flights is to the US and Central American markets, which can be covered by narrow-body aircraft such as the A320 and 737, which are capable of covering over 6000 km for a 737 Max-9 and A320NEO. These types of aircraft, with supreme fuel efficiency, can take off with full load in a runway of up to 1.8 km.
How do you determine demand? that's all that can be accommodated. so it's self fulfilling. There is some amount of demand for Europe and South America. the question is how much.
also the demand that matters is the demand abroad not the demand in Nicaragua. and in nicaragua it's super obvious that the demand from europe is really high.
funny day to post this as i literally just arrived in Buenos Aires. i took the bus to San Jose due to the lack of long haul flight out of managua. i was the demand in question literally today.
Scott you said that the airport will be inviting. Since when have airports been inviting.? The airports that I have seen in Canada, the Caribbean, and the US are far from being inviting. What is an inviting airport to your perspective?
I'm Nicaraguan and I have my doubts about the viability of this new Airport. How is the country going from like 15 flights a day to the projected 100 flights a day on that airport? Seems unlikely when you're not even an airline Hub, like Copa in Panama or Avianca in El Salvador. We don't even have direct flights to Europe or South America (except to Caracas with Conviasa?). Mainly because the demand is not that high. Yes, the relatively short runway of the current Airport might be another reason for the lack of long-haul flights, but what prevents it from being expanded? It's much cheaper and people would appreciate keeping the airport near Managua, specially with the new highway that will traverse the city and would shorten to time to get to the current airport. Waiting another hour in traffic is a big no no for travelers, Punta Huete is in the middle of nowhere, even further away than Granada is to Managua. A quick look at google maps reveals that the current runway can be expanded to 3km which is enough for something like a Boeing-787 or Airbus A350, the most common long-haul commercial airplanes. You see why some people suspect about "other types of airplanes" they plan to land on the new airport? It's not unreasonable to be suspicious... We don't need a massive runway for Copa or Avianca's airplanes.
So really, this makes no sense. Punta Huete is already an operating bomber airport. What "other types of planes" are you suggesting that aren't cargo, passenger or military? That sounds like you are hinting at something, but what could it possibly be? This is a military airport being upgraded to take passengers (and cargo.) The reason you would use Punta Huete instead of Managua MGA is specifically to make accessibility better, lower cost (no need to extend a runway, one already exists) and take those long haul flights that aren't possible now. For exactly all those reasons, Managua isn't a hub, today. But can be. All the reasons you state, are exactly why it makes sense. And you say that people don't want an airport closer to the people, but trust me, everyone is excited about 1) a closer airport 2) an airport that isn't in a slum 3) an airport that isn't ancient and run down and overwhelmed whenever a big flight comes in 4) an airport that isn't right in the capital where no one wants to drive that doesn't live there 5) can take bigger planes so that we can go directly to more distant destinations. But most importantly, given that this is an existing, operational, military airport... what exactly are people "suspicious of" by adding passenger terminals? I think this needs an answer as you are clearly hinting at something that I can't fathom what it could be.
@@ScottAlanMillerVlog To have a long distance flight first you have to know it'll be full week after week, all year around. Otherwise no airline would be interested. Also, you keep defending that there's already a functional runway there. That runway would have to be rebuilt to be minimally functional for a airliner to use it safely.
