    Goob job Patrick! I also finished IM Tallinn 2022 as my first IM. We were in the same shuttle bus the race morning - you listened to music and looked 🔐 in walking to the lake, so decided not to bother. Your videos helped me a lot. Lot went wrong/different as planned on race day, but that made the finish line even more amazing. Thank you and hopefully you make it back to Estonia in the future.

    dude i love these breakdowns SO much. binged all of them this week and now starting a 2nd round :) set a goal to do 70.3 Tremblant next year, so 13 months to do this. my dad passed from a heart attack a few months ago and my brother and i committed to do this together, and also to take better care of ourselves. anyway i just wanna let you know how awesome your videos are, they're very unique in that it's not like a trainer or teacher, but really more just like a good friends that's a few years ahead of you and has so much to share. thanks i'm really grateful that you decided to make these.
    keep well.

    Awesome work man 🙌🏻. Besides being sick having all the data might have worked against you. I know it has happened to me before. It gets in our heads. Over the past years I have learned not to look at any data during race week. The work is done so just follow my instincts, be present and push as hard as possible, the body knows what to do, instincts are very important. Usually a couple days before any race my resting HR and other measures get out of place, nerves take a big part so I just listen to my body and focus on being rested. Well done once again 🙏🏻

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Albert. I agree data could have been influenced by stress and nerves, actually scratch “could” and insert “for sure” ahah! What is coming to the surface though is that I did not have a virus but was suffering from iron deficiency probably caused by some overtraining. I should have started supplementing straight away with ferrous sulphate. Thank you for watching and for the great comment 🙌

    Amazing story Patrick! thx for sharing, so damn inspiring! I was watching your progress on the app the entire day and was kind of holding my breath if you'd hit the wall because of the sickness. Sadly missed your finish by a minute because of the confusing entrance in the seaplane harbour. But I can relate a lot to your race/story. I did the half distance on the next day( my first 70.3 with 3 months prep from 0 fitness) , freshly out of covid, fitness levels in the gutter but somehow it went straight uphill from the start! Was so damn happy and grateful on the bike because i had a lot of strength in me I did not know i have. Smiled pretty much the entire time. Waved at every volunteer. Did not care about the headwinds and was kinda hoping for a second loop at the full distance turnaround 🙈😀
    You make the full distance seem shorter and easier. :) thx man!

    • @PatrickDelorenzi

      Haha wishing for a second loop 🔁 that is so cool! Crowd and supporter energy is a real thing, one of the best parts of the experience imho! I see so many pretend pros with an “angry face” ride by all the supporters and man, they are missing out on free endorphins and energy 🔥 btw Thank you for the chaga tip my bro 😎 I think it helped me get back on track. Good job and great time. I had similar situation during IM Hamburg this year, due to 12 hrs of siting in the car and air condition. At the end it was good race. I think, if you are well prepared, we need to belvies more in our capabilities. Racing alone on long course it is not great experience but it gives you so much confidence. Maybe I will make Tallinn next year, it seems like a great race. I can recommend you Im Gdynia in Poland. It is not only hilly and hard course but also beautiful race :). After my 3 full IM, I found the same conclusions like you. It is not about time, go there, enjoy, go through this all emotions and learn something new about ourselves.

    Amazing, epic. Extraordinary achievement. Imagine what you could have done in more proper, illness free, conditions. My wish for you: to finish your next IM with your loved ones cheering you. Thank you for sharing all your tips and tricks. Bravissimo.
    Can I ask a practical question:
    Why did you wake up in the middle of the night? Did you have to do a long commuting? In Nice (an interesting ironman btw) I woke up at 5, was at bike check at 6:10, then swimstart at 7:30...3 am is brutal!
    Also did you get some sleep?
    I could not sleep the night before my first Ironman. Additionally, going to bed at 5pm if you haven't adjusted to doing so before would be mere wishful thinking in my case, I'd turn in bed like a freaky anguilla until 11pm... Did you take anything to induce sleep?

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Oliver! Thank you for watching, yeah I won’t lie, being at a race with my mom/dad would be so cool. It would make the experience even better. So alarm was at 3:30 because I wanted to eat 3h before the start which was at 6:30 so a bit earlier than Nice, and on top of that the swim start was a 10 min walk + 20 min bus ride away from where I was staying. As far as going to “sleep” at 5pm I really didn’t have a choice, because I was feeling really sick so I couldn’t really do much about it. Did I sleep? Very little, I think many people struggle with this. I didn’t take any supplements to induce sleep. Cheers Oliver! Hope you have a great day

    Well done dude. Its a very inspiring video.
    I have a question over your choice of energy drink - I've honestly never considered using maple syrup, natural honey or cane sugar diluted in water before. Atm I usually mix G1 Sport and Tailwind together, primarily because they both provide carbs and electrolytes. I notice you don't even mention these. What made you go for Maple syrup and sugar? Would you recommend trying it?

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey M! I would 100 million % recommend doing it! All the sports nutrition stuff is just marked up sugar in my experience haha. Maurten Gel is the EXACT SAME COMPOSITION SPLIT as table sugar (with a more refined delivery system the works great, I will give them that. i'm actually a big maurten fan!). What made me go for maplemsyrup and sugar?If you follow Lionel Sanders, the number 2 professional traithlete at the st george IRONMAN World Championship, you will se that he has been using Maple Syrup as his fuel for the past year, and if it's good enough for n°2 in the world, I thought it will be good enough for me. And in the race, I think it was the best choice I have ever made, alongside taking in 100+g of carbs (75kg athlete). I never felt an energy slump, and felt great. Real talk, electrolytes are basically salt (that being said I do use salt caps), and sports nutrition products are just sugar. I've been using sugar water for the past 3 years. As everything, of course, test it out on yourself and see how it works for you! Happy training

      @@PatrickDelorenzi Hey man, thanks for responding so quickly, it's really appreciated!
      Yeah that makes sense, sugar is sugar I guess.
      I see your intake of solid food during the race is pretty low...is that because its inconvenient (i.e. no room on the bike for a box of sandwiches), or because you prefer to take your fuel in solution? I've had several...erm, issues....running long distance after eating solid food. Everyone's physiology is different but it would be good to hear someone else's thoughts.

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries mate! Thank you for the questions - solid food in my opinion is just a drain on the digestive system with no real benefit, for up to 10-12 hours. Liquid calories and gels are so convenient and easy to absorb! I used to think you needed to eat both, but then I talked to various elite pros who, when I would ask them what they ate during a race, always looked back at me and said “Gels, of course!” As if it was the most obvious thing in the world ahha! From then on o focused on getting liquid calories in and gels, I find they work great and don’t weigh down the digestive system ✌️ Give it a go! 100g carb per hour if the intensity is over 70%

    What's your view on completing several full distance races in the same year? A coach I was talking to discouraged me from doing it, he said 2 full distances the same year (unless you really have time and tools for proper recovery, like professional athletes) is not advisable, especially for those amateurs triathletes who have an engaging full time professional/family life.

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think 2 fulls per year is pushing it if you have a busy life; but it’s doable. Just need to adjust time expectations imho! Intensity or distance, choose one of the two 🤙🤙🤙

    why you eat sugar is totally unhealthy? why dont you drink a protein smoothie instead and have proper diet?

    • @PatrickDelorenzi
      @PatrickDelorenzi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because sugar is the basis of all human aerobic (and anaerobic) activity. The days before the race it stocks up glycogen stores in our body, which will be used to create energy / ATP during the event so our muscles can contract. Protein smoothie would take a lot of blood to digest and would not provide what the human body needs to perform in such a long endurance event, which is sugar. And in the days leading up it could potentially help stock glycogen stores but in an indirect way, being that protein can be transformed into glucose but it’s a costly process for the body to do. Carbs are the fuel of life, and thinking sugar is unhealthy is such an antiquated statement - what is unhealthy is insulin resistance
