Growing up we had a water pre-heater that ran a water line through a wood stove, and into a pre-heated water tank that fed the electric water heater. It had a pressure release valve for safety and would occasionally dump hot water out on the cellar floor next to a water drain. All homemade, prompted by the early 70's energy crisis and the sudden spike in the cost of electricity.
It’s good they put a pressure release in it. I have heard stories of people trying to make water heaters and they don’t realize they are making a bomb.
In Ireland we used the living room fireplace which had a ' back boiler '. Basically a metal jacket/fire chamber type thingy that heated the water and the radiators. We also used turf and broken up scraps of kitchen cabinets we purchased regularly from a furniture manufacturer. Not forgetting sawdust too from the logs we cut up. That usually went in the back burner section. Coal or logs in the front depending on budget.
@@WilsonForestLands real curious what is your take on Oregon CAFO and the groundwater being legislated as public domain? Also I for one would love to see videos of your gardening setup/practices in general or specific. Love your videos Michael, keep up the good work brother 👍
Ah your mother wears army boots. Are saying you can't have a cold water heater? A heater that makes water hot is a hot water heater. If you tried to make a compound word out of it like hotwater heater it wouldn't make sense. But to have a heater that produces hot water can certainly be called hot water heater as well as a heater that produces warm water can be called a warm water heater.
First of you are correct it is a water heater. That is one of the coolest off grid units I have ever seen, yes with the boom in off grid living surprised someone doesn't make one. If I was a few years younger would give real thought to making some.
When I was a lad we had an old cast iron bath outside which we filled with water (cold) then we lit a bonfire underneath it, it was great, you should try it at your place. The good thing is you can use big logs.
Cool water heater, we use to have a line running through the coal furnace into a dummy tank that the electric heater would draw from. Basically free hot water during the winter. Cool idea but the fire box is so small it would need constant attention. Have a good one
Sort of like prepared in advance. I keep large stainless steel pots on the wood heater for thermal mass and find it very satisfying when I can put the water to direct use. It seems you could easily install a larger fire box to avoid the repetitive fuel insertion or even use pellet feeder. After several experimental water heaters,I have found that the solar power has become so cheap that I’ve gone back to conventional electric heaters. It’s possible to use the dc power directly but the ac thermostat will not last. In order to run the water heater on my inverter without the 4500 watt load, I put the two elements in series so it only uses 2250 watts.Takes twice as long to do the job but at 71 years old,I only need half the baths.
What is funny is I ended up watching that movie a couple days after I shot the video. I forgot all about that part in my video until I edited it the day after I saw the movie. I had one of those laughing moments.
We have a wood boiler manufacturer near me in upstate NY. “Thermo-Control” I have experience with them. Kinda like an outdoor wood boiler but for inside.
Maybe you already answered this, but what kind of water system do you have feeding your cabin? Since it’s off grid, I’m assuming it’s not an electric pump. Are you sourcing the water from a spring or creek? Does it run by gravity to the cabin? I have a rural cabin here in Pennsylvania with a drilled water well and electric pump. But I also have a year round spring that I’m going to develop so that I have another source of water. At any rate, nice place and I like your channel and content! Keep it coming.

A little bit different context with your video, I like it. Yes and you are absolutely right, but you will always have your you know what i can't think of the name. @@WilsonForestLands...Trolls is the word I was trying to say.
Hi Mike, I agree. First of all everyone knows exactly what you're talking about and second, what if do like I do and not let the water get hot? I only run mine until the water gets warm. So I believe I can call it a warm eater heater. If you took a shower at my house you'd crank the scald guard water valve all the way over to hot but will only come out warm. If the heater is actually running it may become a little too hot unless you like it hot. I don't and don't call it a warm water heater eventhough that's exactly what it produces. I still call it a hot water heater, but mostly because it's not a hot air heater. O F'n K?
According to the Redundant Department of Redundancy, the term "Hot Water Heater" has been the Officially recognized official title since 1824. The more you know!
It doesn't look like it will die any time soon. Could probably weld one from a normal water heater & square tubing. Can part 2 show flushing it out and refilling/ getting air out? Might have gross water at the bottom!
I probably won’t be back there until this summer. I’m not sure if any of the family has flushed it out. It might be a good idea. Never had to deal with getting air out.
OK lots of questions here. Are there air openings to get a good draft ? What kind of pumping system do you use to get the water into the tank and then into the cabin ? What kind of chimney and how do you clean it? Looks like something to consider for my cabin. Thanks
Air comes in through the bottom around where the ashtray is. If there is an adjustment I haven’t noticed it and it doesn’t seem to need one. It’s a gravity feed water system through a pipe from the creek up the hill. The chimney is a straight 4 inch pipe through the roof. With proper insulation apparatus of course. I have never cleaned the chimney, not sure if any other family has. Something I will have to find out.
I know for a fact there was a water heater conference end of the nineties where the elders of the boilers decreed no longer to discriminate between hot and cold water and heat all of them, even heavy water (should it be present). since then it's called water heater.
I have a portable water heater that sits on top of my wood burning stove. It only hold about 2 quarts of water but just enough for a couple of cups of tea.
Well, we have a wood-fired boiler stove. It supplies sufficient hot water for all our needs (yes, all right, it's linked to a home-made solar thermal system as well, but if it's been cloudy all day we just need to light the fire...)
I am back at my place now and won’t be back there until probably Summer. I could do it then if I remember. If you are still watching the channel and I start doing ranch videos, feel free to give me a reminder.

Most people interchange the term water heater and hot water tank. As a result the names have blended to hot water heater. Drives me nuts. Akin to someone saying de thaw. To de thaw is to freeze. Most will say I took x out of the freezer to dethaw. You take something out to defrost.
What would be worse than saying "hot water heater" would be saying "a wood water heater". After all, couldn't you chop up a wood hot water heater and burn it in a wood fired water heater?
