As somebody who is a fan of this genre, and a longtime fan, I appreciate you reviewing this game. I know this isn't a regular type of game to review, and I appreciate you exploring a new type of game you don't always cover.
“Being one step ahead of your problems” is an excellent way of summarizing these kind of games and frankly is altogether really good advice in life too.
Thanks for covering this, Matty. Even if this kind of video doesn't pull as many viewers as major trending topics, these chill discussions about something you clearly enjoy are just so enjoyable to watch. Can't wait to play the game!
Damn Matty getting sponsored by Atlus, that's awesome. You do a great job with your game previews and you are one of the few people on YT who I actually trust with game recommendations. If Matty likes it, odds are I will too, so I really appreciate you putting out so much great info on a wide variety of games for us consumers.
Unrelated but I don't think enough people tell you this... thank you. Thank you for the hard work you put in every day and the amount of effort, time and personality you invest into your work. I still go back and watch your Fallout: Dust Ragethrough, not just to laugh but to just reminisce on your presence on TH-cam and the "Bethesda community". I was still a teenager back then, you have come so far Matty. I can't say how things are going for you but I just wish for your prosperity and success. I love you so much, friend. 💖💝💖💖❤🔥
Man, you played single player but you didn’t say a thing about AI. All those shiny features and options are worthless if AI sends its units one by one to be slaughtered by your armies. It’s frustrating. Please, let us know about AI.
I tried this and I loved it. These games and RTS games like Command and Conquer are very much a problem for me too. SUPER addictive. Loving ARA so much right now.
Shout out to Civ 4 for allowing players to adopt the Slavery civic, and then when rushing a building you sacrifice your city's Population, rather than your Gold lol
I think my Ara addiction is starting to become a serious problem 😅 I never played Civilization and I played a little bit of Age of Empires. Ara has been so much fun!
I've been eyeballing that one all day, seems like a pretty good remake and for $50 it comes with two upcoming expansions plus a few extras. Not quite there yet, but getting closer. Thanks for your comment.
@@greedowins its a good game and remaster. Game with what time flies and gives you content for a long time. If u wanna still wait u can allways buy it from sales few months later...
Same, I remember my first playthrough of Civ too, but yeah, days were removed from my timeline, still chuckle whenever I remember that. Still, I can't imagine if Civ decided to patent their game template. The game industry is rather funny.
I haven’t finished a game yet but to me it seems like the devs said, “What if we take Risk and turn it into a 4x strategy game with ALL the logistics?”
People poke fun of these kind of games until they play them and then they understand why so many PC gamers love them and play them constantly! FrostPunk 2 is another gam out this week, though it does have some performance issues currently. It's still a mad addicting game.
I'm really glad that you enjoyed the game, but I gotta say that I had a quite different experience. As someone who's a bit more familiar with the genre I managed to build up a large empire fairly quickly, and at some point (early middle ages) there was just sooooo much micromanagement that it got unplayably boring for me. Which is not an experienc that I've ever had in thousands of hours of playing civ.
Not going to lie, the reason I've never touched GalCiv 3 and 4 is because I lost so many hours to GalCiv2 that it was scary. I remember 16-18 hour/day weekends for Galciv2. One more turn my ass. And the funny thing is that GalCiv2 actually had warning for when they though you played too much.
I too was a Civilization fan growing up. I played 2 and 3 with my dad in the 90s. Civ 5 was my roommate in college. I think 6 got too complex with all the trading mechanics. I hope 7 streamlines a lot of the boring stuff. I always wanted a random game generator that threw you into a procgen situation to just play a few dozen turns.
Interesting how the view count correlates with the appeal of the game. This positive video as of this viewing is at 15K views, but yesterday kicking the dead horse that is Concord got 4x. The algorithm is something I suppose. Keep up the good work, dude!
Honestly the scoreboard being booted from the game if you progress through the stages is a bit of dealbreaker if they want to keep the spirit of being a 4X game. Hopefully in the future they could add a system that low prestige civilizations get some new gameplay in terms of survival and maybe even be annexed from bigger civ's to live out the game as a Vassal or something to in the future rise to power again. Other 4X games do this very well and Ara can learn from that!
There is a setting that make the game only boot AI nations in the bottom tier, if you still want to play on with your current game. Having played this game a_lot, you can still recover if you are far behind in the early game, or just play on the get a feel for the game.
Civ2 was my first Civ game. Didnt play 3 and 5 but did play 4 and 6. All together thays thousands of hours gone but zero regret. I still olay Civ6 hotseat with my girlfriend on Xbox. If Ara comes to Xbox, I might just check it out.
Yeah I remember my first civ game didn't start till 6 and playing with friends against the npcs with them teaching me like 4 hours of my life gone alone in that sitting. lol
I wish the difficulties of this game will be different from all other civ likes where they all sucks at it by just increasing the oponent ressources/time to research/time build compare to you where its the opposite and rush you with more barbs and all openents go all toward you!!! Instead, have an AI where it adapt to your game style and have the same ressources/times whatever the diffucuties. No buff/No nerf please by difficuties! Pretty sure this game will lack on it like all the other! That what makes those game no fun to play!
@@evp159 love that game. It was even banned in my country. I can also tell you the developers really did their research to turn the game world into a miniature version of my country with the most notable cities/regions. Its awesome!
Worth noting this is not a Civilization clone or similar game at all. Civilization is a historical 4X game with tactical hex based units moving around a world map. Ara does not sell itself as a civilization competitor or a 4X game, it is a Grand Strategy game more in the vein of Crusader Kings or EU4. I could see the confusion but just because it is about civilization doesn't mean it is a Civilization like game ;)
So Civ 6, Civ BE and even worse Civ 7 are not Civilization like games since they are not historical even in a slightest? Hmmm.... you know what? You are right, they are not. Additionally funny is that EU4, Vic3 and CK3 not to mention Stellaris are way more Civ-like games then civ 6, be and 7, huh
I started playing stallaris a couple weeks ago and yeah, that's a game that sucks you in. I was like, when I have nothing better to do, I might play this game. I got too manyy thing going to get that engrossed in a game right now.
I really wish the Civilization-like games would try to step away from real world History and cultures... I just can't get into them, i find it so goofy, i don't care about controlling China or the Ottoman to victory. Give me some made up civilizations, be creative. Or hell just give me randomized, procedurally generated civ, this way it truly feels like you're making the History of a totally new world everytime. If there's one type of game that can benefit from AI and procedural generation it's the Civ genre.
Ummm there are games like that, using fantasy/fictional settings. Endless Legend & Stellaris that come to mind from my lil exp. I believe there’s a Warhammer one too. You can do a ‘tag’ based search for games related to Civ on steam for the top sellers & top rated to find more. Also, had to nitpick that’s not how procedural gen and gen AI works. 😅 most of these games already use procedural generation very very extensively. And AI can surely help generate new visual ideas but making a cohesive package would be the same dev work. We are far from an AI that can generate never-before-used characters, factions, biomes, narrative fiction on the fly in gameplay, beyond what procedural generation already does based on defined rulesets.
II don't know why this game exists.. if I was interested in dollar store Civ, then I'd have actual Civ and wouldn't risk the time-sink for this. Another Xbox miss imo. If you're not trying to unseat the champ, then at least change something up and differentiate yourself.
