  • Future passengers on the CST-100 Starliner spacecraft now know what they'll be wearing as they travel to and from low-Earth orbit destinations, like the International Space Station. The new "Boeing Blue" spacesuits were designed to provide crew members with functionality, comfort and protection.

A lot of people are worried about the EVA requirements on the suit, but it's not really meant for EVA, it's meant as a flight suit. Mainly to protect against cabin depressurization. So this design is generally much better for the requirements. The Orange flight suits aboard the shuttle were for a very similar requirement but were unwieldy.

I'm not too sure. It may have a type of rubber seal. It may not be completely air-tight, but it'll keep you alive in an emergency. It's not an EVA suit. It's meant to be worn in the cabin in case of a loss in pressure or other emergency.

I know this isn't designed to be an EVA suit, but I don't know if I would feel secure knowing the only thing protecting me from the vacuum of space in an emergency is a zipper. Seems like a great suit though. Good work Boeing.

Разработчик скафандров Николай Моисеев о новых скафандрах Boeing:

It's a little surprising to see Boeing use one of the cheapest seat harnesses available in the CST-100 mockup. I'm sure that's not what they're actually using in the flight hardware, but it's interesting to see that level of cost reduction in a spacecraft development program.

My main concern is armor. Any small meteoroid traveling at say 500 m/s faster than an astronaut in EVA will kill them without sufficient armor, that's why the current EVA suit used by most astronauts across the world is so heavy. Also as a side note, that zipper doesn't look very safe, but I'm sure the engineers and scientists over there at Boeing have that in the bag.

This is a pressure suit for inside the spacecraft. The CST-100 is a ferry between Earth and the Space Station. It's not anticipated to do independent missions, so no need for an EVA suit. The Gemini 7 astronauts wore an experimental space suit with a zippered helmet - partly because their mission didn't involve any EVAs.

Is it maybe we don't have any landers or moon buggies there? If you show me some video footage from any of the probes etc we have sent since the 80's ID be happy to watch, but of the 100's we have sent into orbit and passed the moon they never thought the need to show anyone the sites where we put the flag, landers, and moon buggies. The Chang E 1 and 2, didn't even show any of the sites, strange...

They operate between 5 and 6 on the NIIRS scale, you can get a very clear photo of your house, car and dog laying in your front yard from them for about $50. Nasa owns the scale above 6 on the NIIRS. they could zoom in on your dogs eyes and you could tell the color. That should tell you all you need to know about those LRO images.
