My grandfather has a bottle of green Irish tweed from the early 1990s and it still has that Green Irish tweeted smell
I keep them in my basement bedroom. No sunlight gets in there and it's always very cool. The only light they get is from a light bulb that generates no heat and is rarely turned on.
Sure, if you have 3000 bottles, a few will turn and go bad, but most people will never experience this. I have smelled fragrances from the 1990s that are still fine.🤷
Bond no. 9 Riverside Drive in my collection, I purchased in 2004. It's still the same since day one
@@hughcamp2730 can i ask u where you store it🤗
Have a bottle of Drakkar noir from 99 and it’s still good 👍
Smells fine until you compare it to a brand new one. There’s a difference.
The most useful information for me is (not) saving the bottles that are almost gone. 😲 I am so guilty of this... mistake! Time to put them in the rotation. THANKS!
Or move them to a smaller bottle? So less oxygen gets mixed in.
Me too!
I keep my fragrances in my closet, inside a dresser. I also keep them in their boxes.
The temperature is consistent, and no sunlight gets inside them.
I think fragrances with citrus on the top, tend to go away with time, but dense fragrances last way longer, f they are properly stored.
Fingers crossed.
I do the same. 👍
I have had my cologones for 6 years and none have expired. I keep then in the original box inside a giant box i keep in the closet. Their temp is always cool.
Me to
My 2013 bottle of Aventus still slaps.
Some may go bad especially if it has been kept for years… but a lot will be fine if properly stored… I have some for more than 10yrs, some smells different sniffing right from the bottle sprayer, others; top notes are a bit off… but for me I’m fine for as long as the dry down smells the same… I even ordered an old phased out perfume from ebay, i love the scent and is so nostalgic for me that I have to search online, wherever just to get some back… it could be a 20+ yrs. old bottle (90’s perfume)… the dry down is still the same… I only use it on special occasions since I don’t want to live without it soon… 😅
The cons of loving a perfume that has been discontinued 💔 same as a heartbreak 💔 😅
I have a pretty big collection myself, but I've never had one expire on me yet. I do look after them very well & use all the tips you have given us over the years. Thanks.
Great information and thanks for sharing Steven!
after 6 years does not matter how you store them the top notes start to fade. also if it smells of vinegar at any stage it's had it's time. initially the vinegar note is light if you get to that stage just finnish the bottle as quick as you can since it will just get worse very quickly
Here in Middle East high temperatures post high risk for Fragance since room temperature during summer can varies between 35 to 40 outside temperatures can easily reach 50 c degrees
So considering wine refrigerator is best option
What a great video man ❤ Thank You!
Great video as always, really enjoyed that one
Very helpful and insightful. Thank you.
This information is golden if you are a fragrance collector, thanks man, keep up the good work
Per a perfume chemist friend: the more alcohol in the bottle, (and it's kept out of sunlight etc) the longer it will last... So EDT will fare better than edp and pure parfum is the most volatile... Also decanting the last 20ml of a 100ml into a new small bottle could keep it from turning too soon... Hope that's helpful!! P.S. he said once the baudruchage of an extrait is open, you should try to use the extrait within 18-24 months
What is a baudruchge?
Wht the fuck is baydruchgehhggbhnnfe3fg?
@@ImAaronVincentGoggle search: Baudruchage is the artful and delicate technique of wrapping a silken thread around the neck of a bottle of perfume, performed entirely by hand.
I love the sharpie & nail polish advice. I finished a bottle of Bergamot 22 this wk & cracked open a new one I’d had stored in a cooler bag, the difference in top notes is night & day.
Thank you very much for teaching me something about the expirations on the perfumes. I didn't knew that. That's very important to know. Thank you for that advice . You're a great teache . I appreciate that. God bless 🙏
Most helpful vid yet. I didn't know about the oxygenation issues. Thanks, Steven!
Glad it was helpful!
This was very informative and Thank you for sharing
Great video Steven 💎🎉
Thanks again for another great educational video. I pretty much know to keep my fragrance in cool areas but your video gave me more ideas and information. You are awesome!!
Great info video and I enjoyed it and have a blessed night
Le Labo puts the production date on their bottles with a 12-month shelf life after first spray.
I have a BDC EDT that went bad and turned screechy after a couple of years and I know exactly why. I had it in the bathroom and my wife takes showers at volcanic temperatures with her door closed. 😂
Glad my wife isn't the only one lol. I walk in the bathroom and its literally so hot it can melt steel inside.
Thank you sir! Very informative
If someone tells me fragrances regularly expire or "go bad" after 3-5 years, I simply ask them one question..."how does, or can, the vintage fragrance market exist then?". 🤔Fragrances "can" go bad, but MOST do NOT, and IF STORED PROPERLY, most modern fragrances can, and will last decades.💯 Can the top notes become more muted and faded (more likely on freshies)? Sure, but after 15 minutes it smells exactly the same as when you bought it.👍 I have over a 120 bottles in my collection, and of the original dozen or so bottles from 2011 and 2012, they smell the same (actually better) as when I bought them 12+ years ago.💯🤷 The claim that "fragrances expire in 3-5 years" is marketing hype to get you to buy more product.💯
It would sound foolish to if someone told me fragrances expires in 3-5 years would not make sense to me.
How do vintage market exist? Did you not watch the video lol
@nateguerrero9381 of course I watched the video. That's what I posted what I did.🤔💯🤷
As a bit of a nail polish enthusiast, a lot of the same oxygenation rules apply to nail polish. Full bottles of nail polish, especially if you haven't opened them much, can last a while, but once you start using it and it starts being half empty, it turns to go pretty quickly.
I have an Acqua di Gio EDT batch code UY345 from 2003, the only thing it changed is the color and projection. It turned to a yellowish tone, however if i remember right during that time it wasnt as clear as it is now. The projection is not as intense as it used to but doesnt smell bad at all. Considering that when i received it about 5 years ago still sealed.
In 2021 I purchased a 100mL 2011 limited edition Jaipur Aqua by Boucheron.
If it lost some potency over the decade it sat in some wearhouse I’ll never know. It does wonderfully for me in the heat.
I personally find that perfumes with more naturals and a higher percentage of oils, tend to last longer than their counterparts. Moreover, I find that fragrances without any water in them stay fresh longer.
I still have some fragrances from 1997 that still smell good. Also, I try to keep my fragrances in their original boxes if possible to make sure no light gets to them and also to help protect the bottle. This takes up a little more room but I think it is worth it.
EXCELLENT post!!!!❤
Awesome video with lots of great tips! Would love to know the difference between macerating a fragrange vs top notes disappearing vs a fragrance actually turning? I hear a lot of people macerate their frags for more longevity and projection. Any advice?
I have Avon from 2005 that still performs well.
Thank you for the great video
For sure fragrances do expire, but I’ve smelled fragrances from the 1980’s that my family have still not used fully and before that and they still smell decently.
I literally just had this discussion the other day. It’s surprising how many people don’t believe fragrances expire. I had a bottle that had definitely gone bad so I tossed it but I had it for YEARS. You’re right- it just smelled funky!
Fragrance can go bad, doesn't mean most ever do. Stored properly most will last at least a decade or two.💯
Finally someone else addressed the near-empty bottle problem 😂 I had a bottle of CH men for 10 years and it was amazing, then near the end of the bottle I left some 10 ml left and it went bad in like a year.
This was so helpful! I’m about to take my collection from the bathroom and go store it in my dark closet 😅😄
I've got Polo Green from the 70s, still amazing.
Wow thats amazing! I love hearing that
Same!
Thanks for doing the last few videos, it’s good to hear tips from time to time. Unfortunately my Popeye le male turned sour at the top, dry down is still ok
I’ve always wanted to own JPG Popeye, but it discontinued before I could purchase it.
I have Fahrenheit from 1992 it was my Dad's fav perfume and I keep it ,some times when I want to remember him and hour times together I spray the cap a bit and smell for days and days. It's not even close to new Fahrenheit that I bought. My dad's is powerful very in your face masculine. So I guess it got bad ... But I don't care.
That is so touching, bless you.
That doesn't mean it's gone bad at all. It's probably just a little more Rich than it was when you bought it due to some evaporation. Fragrances typically don't go bad.
I feel like my LV noueaveu monde purchased in 2018 has gone bad. Just smells sour now (to me), though it still gets me compliments😔
Small decant sprayers to preserve the most of the juice they are cheap at Amazon, learned this the hard way with Costa Azzurra
Great information thanks
I have a bottle of prada amber edt from around 2005 and it still smells clean and performs well!! Obviously I don't spray it much!!
thinking my bottle is still macerating, meanwhile, its just getting worse lol. lesson learnd. THANKS!!
I have a Bulgary EDT bottle which I started using about 20 years ago. It's now less than 1/4 full. Remained the same. No change in scent.
I have so many frags that I rarely finish bottles. I have only ever finished Prada L'homme and Channel Allure Homme Sport (not Eau Extreme)
Some of the fragrance that I’ve the longest even though they do still smell good . I can feel a burning sensation when I do apply them on my neck unlike the newer bottles . @ this point my new goal is not to buy any new fragrances as longer as I can 🤣
Very interesting. I wouldn’t have expected at all.
Great video thx👍
Very informative vedio. Thanks .
Thanks for the info.
Any time!
Before I knew better I had a Givenchy and Burberry bottle that I stored in my steamy bathroom for like 15 years and they still smelled pretty much how I remembered them lol
My armani aqua d gio year 2000 from high school still smells great
I would like you to make a video about how to train your nose in smelling various notes in a fragrance.
You need to do more reviews on Aaron Terence Hughes fragrances
It's a beautiful hobby... collect on brother 🍻
Most useful content thanks
Happy to help
Geat video thanks
Some 19 years ago I bought Davidoff Echo for Men, and used it sparingly. Then it became unavailable, the bottle is now half full and turned a little brown, it was light green and there is none of the freshness or top notes, it smells very soapy and like household cleaner.
Spray argon gas in the bottles to keep them from making contact with the air (mainly for splash vintage bottles) + wine coolers.
Nice video and also its telltale sign..
Its basically like storing whiskey..well spirits in general
I leave the fragrances in their original box too
numismatics !!!!! I was in a reading group and one task was to learn and share 1 new word per week. Someone brought numismatics. I struggled for MONTHS trying to fit it NATURALLY into a conversation. 😂😂😂
- I caught a guy at the coin machine in the grocery store and asked him if he was a numismanticist. 😂😂
-he replied: WHAT? So I had to tell him the reading group story.
That is a tongue twister lol
I have a fragrance called Champagne by YSL- bought it in 1992. It was discontinued unfortunately. However it still smells divine. I store all my frags in a drawer away from the sunlight.
I have fragrances since 2016 that’s still going strong.
Hey Steven, let's hear your thoughts
All my fragrances that have box’s are stored in them in a darker room. Maybe it helps or not !
My personal experience is that perfumes that contain more citrus are actually the ones most likely to change their scent,BUT THERE IS A GOOD NEWS when the scent begins to change. You can spray some of the perfume and you will find that the remaining amount of perfume still smells healthy. It seems that the oxidized perfume is settling down or that the perfume in the spray tube is the one that has changed the smell, Therefore my advice is that if you find the smell of the perfume starting to change, do not rush, spray the perfume until the unnatural smell goes away, and be careful not to shake the perfume bottle.. Another thing is that if you use perfume at long intervals, this means that the oxidized perfume is slowly settling to the bottom, which means that the perfume will remain for a longer period because its exposure to oxidation takes place slowly and the smell is gradually eliminated. However, if you use most of the perfume in a short time and a small amount remains, this means that The quantity is more susceptible to oxidation and damage because it was exposed to a large amount of air in less period , which accelerates the oxidation process. Finally, as I said, perfumes that contain more citrus are more susceptible to damage, while more intense perfumes are usually more durable (contrary to what some say, that perfumes that contain more alcohol last longer). To clarify this, perfumes like Montale, for example, contain 80% alcohol as well like Chanel perfumes, but Montale perfumes are more intense, so they are supposed to last longer
Turn the bottle upside down and pump to dispense air out. Less oxygenation and keeps the perfume longer if not in rotation.
Great episode…… I keep my collection in a wine cooler
My guess is that fragrances with more natural ingredients will expire faster than fragrances with more synthetic ingredients. Anyone have any thoughts on this theory?
From what I've read actually synthetics will last longer than naturals.
Where are you located, Steven? NY? What is the room temperature there? I have e o er 400 bottles. Where I live, the room temperature fluctuates between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius and it is always dark except for daytime where some light seeps in between the shutters. Should I install an AC in my studio?
If you store them right they want go bad. I have never had any go bad. Sunlight will kill a fragrance faster than Oxygen will. It is rare that oxygen will make one go bad. I store mine in my closet. 60 to 70 degrees is where you want it
I keep all my colognes in their original box !
Hi Steven. A differet topic - you look amazing, what did you do to loose weight if I may ask? Regards
My Santal33 lost the top notes after two years. What was left was good performing but a little rough and unpalatable.
I have Dior Homme Sport from 2017 and it smells the same. I keep it in my closet.
So it would be better to decant your 100ml into 10, 10ml for example? I’m also taking my bottles off my bathroom shelf and putting them on my closet shelf immediately, thanks.
I Recently Bought a Fragrance From Maxaroma. It Had Never Been Opened But It Was Over 5 Years Old.
Was the smell off at all?
@@markoq1879 The Fragrance Is Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Incenso and It Was Unlike Anything I Ever Smelled. I Don't Have a Baseline for How It Should Smell But I Do Plan On Buying a Decant to Verify That the Smell is Right. Thank You So Much For Replying.
@@markoq1879 unlikely. I recently bought Bvlgari aqva that was 8 years old smells amazing and better than what I've got in a recent decant I'm of the opinion that fragrance is rarely ever go bad in less than 10 or 15 years unless not stored properly I have over a dozen bottles from 2011 and 2012 that still smell great
Hiya ! And what about humidity ? Is it a big thing if you're in a normal room ? What percentage of humidity maximum ??
All 75 bottles on stored under my cabinet in the bathroom out of sunlight and moisture
Dear friend, I did not forget to pray for you. I will do it more. This video is very important and useful. I send you a big hug. God bless you.
Many many thanks!!!
Do plastic sealed containers in the closet work, even though the temperature outside of the closet fluctuates?
ive seen that turning the bottle upside down and spraying out air would help, do you think thats true
At what temp do you set it at?
Thank you. I checked my Kilian perfume bottles. There is no 26 M or 36 M written
When there is a small amount of liquid on the bottle it's easier to extract the liquid and put it in vials / decants
Maybe keep the empty bottle as a memento of what it used to contain.
Keep fragrances in a dark cool area away from sunlight & humidity & they'll be fine.
I wish I would have known this info before I accumulated 50 bottles of cologne. 😔
I have a half full one million from 2010 or sth. Is it done?
Well I keep my over 160 bottles of fragrances in my man cave and I definitely get solar on my roof top just for that purpose just to have my A/C on at 73 degrees at all times
So basically treat it like a cellphone. Away from direct sunlight, moisture and keep it between 20 and 80% lol
I have always stored mine in the orginal box - dunno feels kinda safe that way
Me too I keep all boxes and in a dark cool room
Seeing you after ages. Hope you are doing well, Steven! You've really slimmed down...
No....next question
❤❤
