- This was before I listened to the Revolver album but after the first listen the album honestly does get better first listen I didn't enjoy it as much as the other Beatles album I listened to on my first time. However the album is growing on me as I start to hear more of the songs. I hope you guys enjoy and thanks for watching Like and subscribe if you enjoyed. #TheBeatles

That's the thing, some of these albums require a few more listens to fully appreciate them (it did for me when I first started listening to them) but if you persist the reward is tremendous so it's great to hear you're re-listening to these albums 👍

For a long time, this was my favorite Beatles album. Sgt Pepper's was more influential, but this album song for song rivals it IMO.

If I remember correctly, this was originally released as a double EP. Then Capitol added some tracks and released it in America as an album. The movie itself was the Beatles' first big project after the death of their manager Brian Epstein, and their first widely-perceived failure.
Correct. Magical Mystery Tour was the one US album to get adopted after the fact into the official Beatles album catalogue. So when people talk about The BEATLES (white album) being a follow up to Sgt. Pepper, they are not wrong, as at the time they weren't thinking about Magical Mystery Tour being a full LP so it wouldn't count, but if you were to rank all the Beatles albums, you'd have to include this one, because it does count now, even if it didn't at the time.
I think sometimes this album gets a bad rap, because it wasn't originally intended as a full LPx which is unfortunate as it has some really good songs on it.
I like both the original ep well actually a double maxi single and the LP ! And I love the film's Yellow Submarine LP with the extra songs and also the Hey Jude album ! 🤡
You’re not wrong regarding Paul’s songwriting. A lot of them definitely have a nursery rhyme/story feel to them lyrically. But he knows how to make pop songs that stick in your head.

Jony, If I'm right, I believe you live in NY. One day check out Strawberry Fields in Central Park at W72nd and Central Park W. It is a memorial to Lennon across from the Dakota Apts. where he lived and was killed in 1980.

Music reviewers hated it. Definitely shows their trippy/experimental side. Just read that Strawberry Fields is written about John's insecurities and his tough life as a child; it was named for an orphanage in Liverpool near where he lived. Love your reactions; great insight and spot on.
This album was really an EP from the movie Magical Mystery Tour (Side 1 - Track 1 to 6) and a compilation of 1967 singles (Side 2 - Track 7 to 11). At the time it was never intended as an album by The Beatles. Capitol records made the compilation to sell it as an album in the USA. Later on it became as part of their albums catalog. I think it is a good album that close their psychedelic era.

I've never understood why this album is hardly mentioned and when it is, I've heard this one for 5 decades now,
"Its not a regular album they actually intended to make, it's just songs slapped together by someone else that's based on a TV show that flopped".
SO BE IT, it's still a creation of The Beatles that few bands, even today, could even make. Many artists can only wish in their wildest dreams they had "throw away songs" such as the quality of what's on "Magical Mystery Tour" that someone could slap together and call it an album.
It was a film that Paul produced that flopped. Not a tv show. It was very boring & stupid. Except the songs that were great music videos, way before MTV!

Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road are my favorite Beatles albums. I like Magical Mystery Tour because the song quality is so damn consistent. Mystery Tour is a companion album to Sgt Pepper, so there's lots of comparisons to be made. I like both albums but I think the song quality is a bit more consistent on Mystery Tour.

I Am the Walrus is like looking at one of Salvador Dali's surreal paintings, except in audio. Think of the times when this particular song came out and all the unrest going in the world in the 60s and into the early 70s. That's why the article interpreted it as angry, I think. I don't think it's angry at all. It's just John playing with words. It's one of those John Lennon songs that up to interpretation. It's one where the words become musical notes of a sort to hear rather than words to listen to understand any logical meaning. Like listening to a song in another language you may not understand, but the words sung and music together are beautiful. And believe me, back then we were trying to figure it out too, and loved it!! LOL! On what you said about All You Need Is Love, you should google search the video of them recording it! It's rather historic. The full vid will not be on this platform but on another whose first initial begins with 'v' and the last is an 'o'. If you know what I mean. LOL! When I've tried to place a link to it in other rooms, my comments get Unperson-ed in less than 5 seconds! ✌️😎
I love how you take your time to sit through some challenging albums from the 60's (and 70's) and give them your full attention and consideration. The 60's had some amazing music, but it's not as easy as today's stuff to pick up and enjoy on a basic level. It feels like you're truly going on a journey to experience and appreciate each album on their merits, to challenge your musical tastes. Massive respect to you!

"MMT" is, as you know, an original soundtrack EP. Previously released singles were then added and made into an album. It's helpful, to know the film, which is a bit strange, even without a really good concept, but contributed to "MTV", in other words, music television, developing later. Five of the songs became worldwide hits, especially "All you need is Love" has a very special background. The story can of course be found on the Internet. "Baby, you're a rich man" was used in the soundtrack of a film about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ...
Baby you're a rich man was one of the last song that Lennon Mccartney actually wrote together. They wrote it about their manager, Brian Epstein, who died around that time. I loved your reaction!
White Album is my fav. It was a Double LP. Came with 8×10 glossy pics of each too & in US was a colorful booklet of pics from the Mystery Tour movie. But I still love this LP too. Glad you got the point of "All You Need is Love" & "Fool on the Hill" & "Baby, You're a Rich Man."
What a freaking incredible album, and so incredibly underrated. Just listen to the bass lines! This is the album that made me realize how brilliant this band is...
Revolver and Rubber Soul are the best two Beatles albums in my opinion. Between the two you can literally witness their musical evolution from bubble gum pop to serious musical pioneers. The two albums really should have been a double album.
Oh, to understand Lennon better read up on Eastern Philosophy and Lewis Carroll. It helps so much seeming nonsense to make sense. LoL
Don't worry! Like, I hated Blue Jay Way when I first listened to it, but time made me loving it! BTW, I don't know if you've noticed, but Side B is all singles, The Beatles had this policy of not releasing album-songs as singles, but Capitol just mashed them all together in America.
Another fun fact! Flying is one of the few songs regarding Lennon/McCartney/Harrison/Starkey as composers! And The Fool On The Hill is also on Glass Onion! You should definitely listen to it again and take a closer look on its lyrics. You missed some another references in it hahah

A lot of people favourite songs on the album are penny lane strawberry fields forever and I am the walrus those songs are considered classics
All these songs were single hits, it might not get mentioned much as an album but these songs were known by EVERYBODY for decades as hit singles. I seem to remember it was the soundtrack for a Beatles TV movie, I remember seeing it on TV at the time and it seemed weird but fascinating, I was only about eight years old at the time.
I think it’s an uplifting album. The original EP released in Britain was panned terribly... The full length album added much that was originally singles. All in all, a moment in history.
I was about 15 when this was released. I’m still very fond of it.

Mystery Tour has 2 classic Beatles songs, Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love. But there are other hits, Strawberry Fields, Fool on the Hill and Hello Goodbye. All those songs got heavy radio play back in the day.

Hey Jony!! Revolver (1966) and Rubber Soul (1965) are in the middle of their careers. They began recording from 1963 to 1969, with 12 (studio) albums in all.
The Beatles, like Mozart, can be child-like in their purity - but not really childish, if you know what I mean.
Watched all of your videos on The Beatles. Enjoyed them all! BTW, this EP (a soundtrack) wasn't bashed, the movie was (that's what Paul was defending on the BBC.) I love this EP. It includes some of their best, and most culturally important, songs.
I loved your reviews and views of each track! I hope you'd do Rubber Soul, Let It Be then Abbey Road and some of their early stuffs plus their solo stuffs. I know that is too much but I'll wait for that if you're interested with it. For me John Lennon is my song writing guy and Paul McCartney is my melody guy then combine with George Harrison amazing compositions and Ringo's drumming skills are just amazing. @@fiendjony778 Of course mate, I appreciate doing this kind of reactions and reviews to some of the music that has been released 50 years ago and some of it are still relevant now to these days. I'm just 20 years old and looking them up since when I was a child and it's crazy to think that these songs/albums was released 50 years ago and I just want to see some of our generations reacting from it. It's up to you my guy on which do you to go first, just remember that Abbey Road is their last sessions/their last recordings when they we're still together as a band and John's last track on that is "I want you (she's so heavy) onwards on the album it was the 3 of them then quits, well some of it though because some of the tracks onwards i want you she's so heavy we're been done since the white album sessions then they just put it there so that they could still feel that John is still on that session. John is more serious when it comes to his solo, well all of them but I don't want you to spoil some of it. It's better when you listen them at your first hearing so that you'll enjoy them. I couldn’t live without this EP (this was a soundtrack, btw.) Some I’d my favorite songs ever, Hello, Goodbye and Fool on the Hill. But this is midway through the group’s recording career, there were several albums before ❤

I'm 66. Missed the Beatles till White Album due to early years in northern Nigeria and boarding school. Never heard this as an album, only as one-off songs. I do know the film had a chaotic, rambling theme based on that era's fashion for coach (single-deck bus) trips. Those were days when car ownership was not for everyone. I remember the bus depot in centre of my town would advertise them: some to definite destinations, eg a particular seaside or castle or garden; some mystery routes. Route would influence type of person signing up. They intrigued me. I guess some people went as couples or families but you'd be thrown together with 30+ strangers most intent on fun, some determined to be miserable, others hoping to find a spouse with a shared interest in, eg stately homes and history. The critics who panned the film merely revealed their middle class snobbery and complete detachment from the truly popular working class and lower middle class musical hall vaudeville backgrounds in which Beatles were rooted prior to rock 'n roll of their teens.
A feature of travelling by bus across USA or coach in UK is how you drift in and out of sleep, dreams, alertness, awareness of other passengers, a sense of being alone and detached from the world as it passes by, jolt as driver hits brakes or swerves for whatever reason. The weird feeling when you arrive at destination and collect your bag and manoeuvre around passengers you haven't noticed.
Now doing long exercise routines in the house due to heart attack and lockdowns, I'm discovering Beatles. The variety of styles, volumes, rhythms of their stuff really helps me work out without boredom and with subtle shifts of energy levels from song to song. No other artiste or best of collections comes close to Beatles ability to carry me through my 3-hour programmes. Blondie and some Who mixed with UK punk is also helpful. It's been a fascinating discovery. I was too cool for school to appreciate them when younger.
Mark Lewisohn's books and TH-cam videos, among others, show how Beatles encapsulate and catalyse the cultural development of an era from their family histories onwards first in UK Liverpool to USA and world.

i know im 3 years late, but fun fact!! Paul got the idea for The Fool on the Hill because he was out on a walk one day and looked over and saw a mysterious looking man in the distance, looked away for a second, and when he looked back the man was completely gone 😅 ive always loved that story (people who know the story better, feel free to correct me on anything i got wrong)
Sergio Mendes & Brazill '66 version of "Fool On The Hill" is totally awesome. Lani Hall (Herb Alpert's wife) has the voice of an Angel.
I do think that it shows, that this wasn't really an album, but was an EP with some singles and B side stuff tacked on for side 2. The singles include a couple of their best, but the first part sounds like it's of a piece, and the second half feels like 'and now some more songs'. As someone who is a big fan of when albums are sequenced really thoughtfully, I think that explains why I don't go back to this one much, even though I like a lot of the songs individually.

It was not the album that caught flack, it was the movie! The album was a big success and hit #1 on the album chart in the USA. The movie was panned by the BBC and premiered in black and white to show their dissatisfaction for the movie, which the BBC had commissioned the Beatles to produce.

I think in life we sre equal with love, because we lose the cultural influences that divide us. But, I have listened to this song, All You Need Is Love., since it came out.
One last thing this song was used to represent Great Britain in the first round the world satellite hook up. Countries sround the planet put on shows and events for the world, for the first time.

the critics didn't pan the album. they panned the movie. the movie really isn't very good but the musical segments are all top notch.
in britain, the movie's soundtrack was released on a double EP that contained only the songs from the movie. in the u. s., capital issued it as an album, with the movie songs on one side and all the 1967 singles on side two. in this case, only, the u. s. version became the official standard.
Nothing that you can sing that can't be sung. It was not about Accomplishing what you love to do. It was more that the Beatles were being treated like gods, expected the Save the World with their Music and Wisdom. Here they are admitting that they had human limitations too. There was nothing they could save that couldn't be saved. They tried to make new stuff, but all they could make was stuff that could be made. They were not miracle workers, after all. We are all only humans at best.
When people judge beatles albums you get rely do it unless you lived the the 1960s because you can't get the full appreciationship of how amazing, ground breaking and revolutionary the songs were...you compare them to music that followed but 90% of those musicians copied many things the beatles did....but I suppose only a few people have that ability to do that....the old people that is...the rest of us just have to have an opinion on the song as it stands without any knowledge of what it was like before thise songs were released appreciation

You need to watch the anthology DVDs to learn their history. It’s a good watch showing how they came from poor backgrounds in England and worked their way up to become the biggest band ever.

Paul was the only one with a family that has a musical background. His dad taught him lots of oldies & so that's where he gets those old sounding, cute songs. But they are catchy. Dylan said the only songwriter he thinks is the best is Paul McCartney as he still writes catchy songs. For me, I prefer John who wrote more about his own deepest feelings & dreams for the world. It's more personal & intellectual at the same time. "I am the Walrus" is basically John having fun with words..like modern poetry. Dylan used a lot of imagery too.
Dylan actually said he is in awe of McCartney, and McCartney is the only one he is in awe of. To say that Paul writes catchy tunes is dismissive of the vast variety of songs he wrote, many of which were deep and concerned with the world. The difference between John and Paul is John only looked inwards at his own sorrows for inspiration and when he did look outwards it was to criticize and find fault with the world around him. Paul, on the other hand, looked outward for inspiration and showed deep empathy for the sorrows and troubles others suffered under: Eleanor Rigby, Blackbird, Lady Madonna, She's Leaving Home, etc. He tried to lighten others suffering with his positive hopeful songs: It's Getting Better, Let It Be,
O Bla Di O Bla Da, etc. I prefer Paul who was more compassionate and less self-absorbed. If any one needs evidence of his innate compassion, when Paul was a boy, the neighborhood in which he lived had some elderly folks who lived alone. He would offer to do tasks for them that they could not do themselves. He would do the grocery shopping for one elderly lady in particular and when he was done shopping he would sit with her and listen to her life stories. Eleanor Rigby was based upon her.
You should watch "Yellow Submarine" , an animated movie they made based on their song by that name.
I've been after reactors all over the place to do just that! LOL! At least start with Hard Days and work up to YS the movie. Most will in time I suppose. But let's stay on them about it anyway! LOL! ✌️😎

While I love Sgt Pepper as a concept LP, I actually like more songs on Mystery Tour. Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, All You Need Is Love, etc. It was the "Summer of Love" & this sealed it. The movie was boring & bad. But it contains videos of the songs, way before MTV. Also, ""All you Need is Love" was recorded live around the world w many other rock artists & celebrities. A 1st for any rock/pop band.

Magical Mystery Tour isn't actually an album. It's a compilation of songs (singles & b-sides) released in early 1967 with songs from the soundtrack EP (7 inch) from their movie 'Magical Mystery Tour'
It wasn't an album when they released it, true, but it does count as an album now. In 1976, the US version was released in the UK and has become the official version. Every worldwide catalog release has included it with all of the others.

Magical Mystery Tour was NOT an album, but an EP wich contained the first five songs. The other six were three different singles: Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever, Hello goodbye / I Am the Walrus and All You Need Is Love / Baby you're a Rich Man

A little different take on All You Need Is Love- it doesn't matter what you/do/say/make/sing. It really doesn't matter. All you need is love- the rest doesn't matter. (After 50 years of listening to the lyrics). Lennon has a lot of songs with the same theme- a lot of people are running around, but missing the most important things in life.

Magical Mystery Tour was just a small collection of Beatles-singles ( All you need is love, Hello Goodbye, Penny Lane and their b-side --- yes, Strawberry Fields Forever was released as b-side ofvthe single Penny Lane!), plus 6 tracks from the Experimental movie for television Magical Mystery Tour. M. M. T. was NOT a LP Album as the other ones uou talk about as Sgt Peppers, Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, Revolver, The White Album... M..M.T. was released as a Xmas Extra Gift of the Beatles in 1967.

Other songs they had around at the time, which are sort of honorary MMT songs, are Hey Bulldog, All Together Now, and It's All Too Much. They also had Lady Madonna, but that (a sort of St.Louis piano boogie) would have been a *really* jarring mismatch in style. Except for "Flying", the album, though not having the stylistic brilliance and artsy delicacy of Sgt. Pepper, is pretty damn good. I am sorry that its get so little esteem.
@Xarhtna That kind of rhythm that the melody of Your Mother Should Know has. Technically, it comes from a combination of 1) being a "shuffle", which is to say it is a kind of waltz within a 4/4 (so is Revolution) and 2) having a lot of hitting 4.5 and 1.5 and not 1.0. HItting downbeats too much, especially 1.0, makes a melody feel awkward and ponderous, like (in my opinion) In My Life. Paul (at least in his prime) never did that. His melodies were never "awkward and ponderous".
You are correct, sir. The first side consisted of songs attached to their home-grown film. It was intended to be an EP, but the record companies, especially in the US, felt it was necessary to produce a full album. So, they took a set of songs that had already been released as singles and packed them on the second side.
They were still pretty deep in psychedelia at this point. Their homegrown film was heavily criticized. One of the major problems was that it was intended to be in color, especially on the 'Flying' segment, but it was broadcast in B&W. So, when the colorful psychedelic scenery was floating by, people wondered why they were watching a countryside floating by.
In color? Meh. It's a pretty lame film. The only good segment for me is John's dream sequence with the fat woman trying to eat spaghetti.
'All You Need Is Love' was broadcast world wide. It was Britain's contribution to Our World, the first live global television link, for which the band were filmed performing it at EMI Studios in London on 25 June. It was estimated that 400 million people saw this. They producers approached the Beatles for a song and John pulled this one out.
Lennon is said to have called McCartney's sound "granny music"... McCartney was influenced by British music-hall tradition whereas Lennon was more of a shit disturber and more likely to sound aggressive, distorted, and avant-garde.
I love this effort from you. This is how most fans from 1965 on listened to the Beatles. We didn't cherry-pick this song or that - those were saved for the radio. But get near the record-players, and it was full albums, full time. (Blocking: what about editing out minutes from each song? I would argue that this album's four Lennon songs (Walrus, Strawberry, Rich Man and All You Need) are some of his best lyrics, fully showing his style of parody and twisted words.
@@BuffaloC305 Totally agree Chuck. And the music with those too. I have every Beatles album, and when I get it the mood for a rack of Beatles, more often than not I'll grab Magical Mystery Tour. Just to pass the time cleaning the house or something like that. But for some reason it's usually that one... for some reason! LOL! And it's mostly because of Lennon's, mostly. LOL! ✌️😎
@@GrouchyMarx I remember being so dismissive of this album, too, because 3 of those Lennon singles and the rest were overplayed on local AM stations that Christmas; We haven't played most of this in a decade... then I saw the Analogues BABY YOU'RE A RICH MAN and I remember excavating those lyrics and being shunned by his imagery.
I have lately included this among a top Beatles album but I still wanna hit the SKIP button when ALL YOU NEED's brass starts up. I don't hate it - I am soooo tired of it. "Why don't the jingle artists use HE SAID? I'd get tired of that one after enough times, too, I know. NO REPLY. ANY TIME AT ALL.
@@BuffaloC305 I hear ya! Anything one hears over and over gets tiresome real quick! Take Crimson and Clover. A good ole tune from the 60's. I like it as well as any, played once in a while on the radio. BUT, in the early '70s the person living above me at an apartment would play it "over and over" again on their record player at 7:00 in the morning for at least an hour or longer! I worked the night shift and needed to sleep. No doubt they left that stack arm over so the single would replay each time... AND I GOT SICK OF IT!! LOL!!! Turned out my neighbor was a gorgeous woman and when I complained to her, she deeply apologized and said she just loves the song a lot, but didn't realize it was so loud. LOL! She turned the volume way down, and we became friends and hung out for a while. I like Crimson now, but not "over and over" like the song goes! Regards! ✌️😎
@@GrouchyMarx (There is a Tommy James DVD of a small club performance. He's wearing big Sergeants Stripes on the sleeve. This is a pretty "story of" but the best thing is Tommy's reworked, acoustic version of I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW. It's never recorded on anything he's done - what a shame.)
"Fool on the Hill" obvious reference there
People didn’t like this EP as the film was unbelievably weird. It’s one that I think has got better with time. The Fool on the Hill is, for example, one of the best songs Paul wrote as a Beatle.
I Am the Walrus is basically a load of nonsense lyrics thrown together randomly, and is basically the love child of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, another nonsense song (both great songs, but examples of Lennon writing total crap from a lyrical point of view).
Baby You’re a Rich Man is basically a John song and and Paul song thrown together. John wrote the ‘Beautiful people’ verses, which they combined with Paul’s Baby You’re a Rich Man, which was unfinished, to make one song.

Magical Mystery Tour was not really a real album. Magical Mystery Tour was originally, in the UK, an EP with just the new songs that were in the movie. There were not enough songs for full album, so in the US, Capital Records added extra songs that were existing, non-album singles to fill out enough for a full album. That is the album we know as Magical Mystery Tour today. Capitol later made another pretend album called Hey Jude, also made of non-album singles. As far as albums The Beatles intentionally recorded go, The White Album it the album after after Sgt. Pepper. The US version of Magical Mystery Tour is the only US album version that was included when The Beatles Catalog was put on CD in the 80s. That is when Magical Mystery Tour acquired legitimate, official album status.
