  • A really fun day out with Sarah H. and Ian F. in one of my favourite areas in the Ghost, Valley of the Birds. I had some fun with new to me video editing tactics here, let me know what you think. If you just want to enjoy the ride great, or it might be useful to stop and see where I return to "sag" (hanging straight armed off my top tool so my trunk is loose) to fix my feet or adjust my position. People tend to get stuck in "tight" positions rather fixing them. I spent most of the '90s feeling awkward and weird on ice; it wasn't necessary!
    There is no one "best" way to climb ice well, but it's usually clear when someone is locked on and enjoying the climb., and to me that's good ice climbing. They are relaxed, moving upward near continuously, and just happy to be outside doing something cool. As a guiding guest of mine said recently, good ice climbing feels like, "You belong there." She said that after massively improving her movement in just a couple of days. Good sticks, good feet, go up! For me the goal of ice climbing now is to enjoy the movement, the wild positions and places, and the people I'm with. If I do that and come back safe then that's good ice climbing. I did a whole series of videos on some tactics I've found that help people feel more like they belong on ice, and am stoked they are helping people. If you want to judge your own ice climbing just ask if you are solid, in balance and feel like you belong. You'll know the answer by how you feel. Swing 'em!

    Until you put that first screw I was wondering if you are actually planning to free solo that, haha. Nice to watch the confidence in axe swings and crampons. Well done!

    Great to see both perspectives! The wide angle shots are great to get a sense of the body movement as a whole, the close ups are great for when placing a screw or sometimes a tool swing.
    I totally agree with what you state in the description: have fun, be humble and come back home safe!
    We are having a pretty late season this year around Montreal and it makes me so jealous watching this video!! Hopefully next weekend is the day!!
    Thanks for the great advice and the great video! Keep'em coming!!

    Such a great little video. Enjoyed the footwork, it's a great example of what I was taught recently, taken to the next level.

    great video! I really liked the dual angles put next to each other. Did the GoPro die at the end?

    Is it just me or are you climbing really fast. I just started out, and I'm never sure if it will hold 😅
    Great video though 👍

      Decision making comes with the number of times you've swung a tool. Being solid is more important than being fast, just do you and all will be good!

    damn, you climb so high before placing your first screw, my hands were sweating so much!
    By the way, I went Climbing last weekend in Pontresina and I banged my knees and shins pretty bad against the ice, how do you prevent that ?

    I'm so happy for the belayer to have enjoyed watching you climb. I'd rather watch the video later and would have moved as far left as needed for the rope to go flush down the ice after you clipped the first screw.

    • @willgadd2187
      @willgadd2187  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ice screws are pretty good on outward pull, and it's more important to anchor the belayer in a safe place where falling ice won't hit them. The ground anchor also keeps the belayer from being pulled into the falling ice/climber...

    • @dookshi
      @dookshi ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not worried about the strength of the ice screw nor would anchoring the belayer further to the left put them in any danger. Rather, the prospect of the leader riding that part of the rope running up from the belayer to the first screw (while not being flush with the ice) is what makes the 2:24 to 3:59 part of the video so scary to watch.
