How To Solve The Mystery of Virus-Like Yellow-Green Spots on Buddleia Leaves (Aphids)

  • Buddleia, also known as Butterfly Bush, has beautiful brightly coloured scented flowers and is often a beloved specimen shrub in UK gardens. As they grow, the young leaves sometimes develop small yellow spots, and become distorted and twisted.
These mottled yellow-green spotted, misshapen leaves look alarming and trigger worries that a virus infection or herbicide damage is killing the plant.
Have you spotted misshapen leaves with yellow-green patches on your buddleia? In this video I show you how to identify these unusual diseased looking leaves on your buddleia.
I then show you the tiny insects, the aphids, feeding on the leaves and causing the adverse reaction of virus-like symptoms on the buddleia leaves.
Don’t panic and destroy your buddleia plant if you see these interesting symptoms, it’s not caused by a virus or herbicide damage. The leaves are temporarily unsightly but will not cause long-term damage or kill your buddleia plant.

Did you spot misshapen yellow patches on your beautiful buddleia plant? If so, you likely don't have to worry - but it's worth knowing what caused it. Happy watching! 😃

I just noticed this exact same thing on the new growth on my Butterfly bush - and I feared the worst. So its just those pesky sap sucking aphids, that's a releif. Thanks for your knowledge shared.

Happy to help! It’s a dramatic symptom isn’t it? but thankfully no long term harm to the plant 🌸

Oh gosh, thank you for this, I've been worrying about my buddleia cuttings as one pot of five new growths had the exact yellow dotting and wrinkling. Unfortunately I quickly cut off all the infected leaves and the budding tops, so after watching this I could kick myself!
But on the other hand I'm so pleased it's not a blight, and my plan of covering my gardens with buddleia can continue to grow ...pun intended
    Thank you so much 🤝🏻🌱

It's a very dramatic symptom isn't it? Luckily cutting those tops off won't have caused long term harm to the plants, and it was the most sensible action at the time. I'm so pleased this video was helpful and I hope you can fulfil your plan to grow a beautiful garden full of healthy buddleia plants!

The ones near me look far worse than that ..but no sighn of aphids or ants ..theyve been like it for a while now ..months ..

Yes, mine look even worse this year as well! The aphids move on to other plants fairly quickly, so you won’t spot them or the ants now. Unfortunately the distorted leaves stay on the plant through the whole season, so you will see the leaf symptoms until leaf fall.
I know a number of commercial nurseries sent samples be tested for viruses last year as they were concerned, and all the tested buddleia plants were virus free. So although the symptoms are dramatic the consensus is still that aphids are the cause! 🌸

I've got something that I've never seen before it's like a mass of flower inhibition so the flowers will not open on butterfly bush it's a big bush and only a few have escaped the dreaded aphid? Attack

That sounds very frustrating Alistair. We have had a very bad year for pests and diseases this year. I’ve seen a lot more aphids on my buddleia this year, and many more distorted leaves than last year. If your aphid infestation is very bad then yes it may be damaging the flower buds. The other option may be a fungal disease with all the wet weather we’ve had. 🌸

So will the flowers still grow? Or should we spray them with something?

    • @rebekahtheukplantdoctor
      @rebekahtheukplantdoctor  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

No need to worry about treating it, the aphids themselves seem to disappear before the plant flowers. The buddleia in this video flowered beautifully despite having these symptoms on many of the leaves. 🌸

Rebekah, A few years ago I had spider mite (little
red spiders) which made the leaves turn yellow all over and sag and shrivel. I had to spray the plant.
I thought I had the same problem, but it's not all the leaf that turns yellow. It seems I don't need to spray it, is that correct?
I noticed the ants this time which weren't there when spider mite was a problem... So Its a pity they don't eat the aphids that would be pest control in itself.
If I don't have to do anything that's great. I hate spraying when there are ants and normal spiders using the plant as a web holder.

Hello Cathy, the ants on your buddleia would certainly indicate aphids are causing the yellow spots on the leaves this time. Buddleias are usually pretty vigorous (unless it’s a very young plant), so no need to treat the aphids. The aphids will disappear soon naturally and the plant will recover just fine. Happy gardening 🌸
