  • Spedit and Kitty emigrated to Australia in 1975 along with their family. Here they open up about this life-changing step and look back on their life in their adopted land. The interview also shares the story of the start of the Hamrun Association in New South Wales, Australia in 1980 and what follows in the years to come in Sydney's Western Suburbs. Hamrun is a small village from the island of Malta. For over 150 years the village has celebrated the Feast of San Gaetanu in August. It was Espidito's and the forming committees vision which included: Espidito Zammit, Joe Apap, Fred Pace, John Farrugia and the members that have now passed away; Victoria Mallia, Alex Apap, George Pace and Paul Galea. Their incredible fundraising efforts by this group of committed Maltese people and their families and supporters staged the first dinner dance which was held at Blacktown Police Boys in 1980 with the Cyclone band and the first Festa held in 1981 at St Aidans Church, Rooty Hill with the late Father Grady and late Sister Anne supporting the community at large. The hand made wooden pedestal that you you will see in the video that the statue sits on was designed and made by the Apap Brothers from Sdyney. The statue is of the patron Saint Gaetanu imported from the island of Gozo, Malta.
For the following years the committee worked hard to create so many exceptionally memorable events that carved out the way for thousands of people whether they were Maltese or other nationalities to enjoy similar events to what they experienced from the mother land.
The Hamrun Club is now based at Marsden Park, New South Wales.
