    She moves! Just to clarify, that is a 230 cid OLDSMOBILE engine. The Pontiac six WAS used in 1938 only, but not in 1-ton and heavier trucks. If it's a Pontiac engine you would see the Pontiac indian cast into the driver side block. GMC brought out a new OHV six cylinder in 1939 but they didn't have a suitable engine that would fit the light trucks up to then. They would not use the splash-oiled Chevy engine...Ken. People have to keep in mind that before 1965 or so, GMC wasn't just a badge-engineered brand like they are now. Lots of things were different from and better than the Chevy trucks.

    Back in an era where they even styled work trucks. I get so wistful whenever I think about that. And yeah you can jump a 6v off of a 12v system. It's usually the gauges and accessories that don't like 12v while the starting circuit is fine with it. My '46 DeSoto taught me that. Great video guys!

    I heard the comment about the six volt system. In high school I drove a 52 Caddy. 6 volt system. I lived in Florida and always had trouble starting it when it was hot in the summer or what they called winter. I found a place called Ellman Battery. They rebuilt starters and generators and built and sold batteries. All the mechanics were ancient to a 17 year old but they knew their stuff. I mentioned to the mechanic my problem. Well they fixed it. They installed an 8 volt battery ( boats were or maybe still are 24 volt systems and used three 8 volt batteries) and bumped up the regulator. Everything else still worked fine. They said I would burn out bulbs a little quicker and the generator would get hot and sling the solder out, which it did, but it was a small price to pay for being able to start it on those hot afternoons

    • @1963impala2drWaylonWire
      @1963impala2drWaylonWire  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      back in the 60s... my dad always bought 8 volt batteries for our old 6 volt tractors. I have a 32 chevy with a 6 volt starter that I've been running on 12 volts for 9 years with no issues.. it kicks it over quicker.. making it start quicker so it doesnt sit there and grind so it might even last longer than it would with a 6 volt battery..

    I could watch (and do) what you guys are doing all day long. Thankfully, I get to do some of it too!. In fact, I just started installing a rear-facing receiver hitch on the front of my trailer. I have a spare winch mounted on a hitch setup that’ll slide right into there and pull old vehicles up onto my trailer whether they run or not. There’s already a power point on the back of my truck thanks to the previous owner. First up is to winch up my friend’s old Dodge and bring it to him, then I’m going to go get a 1940 JD Model D tractor that has been given to me. Been sitting for decades. It’s mostly all there, except for the grill shell and cover and the pressure relief valves on the cylinders. I’ll have to post a video of that job. Since I do most of this stuff by myself, I had to figure a way to do it more easily!
    Of course, if you did that, it’d take all the fun out of it, eh! 😆

I found a 1981 I will look at and unless i find something really bad with it, i will bring it home on Sunday. Not looking at it for a daily driver , but when I get done with it, I could use it for that reason. I told my son I enjoy working on VW's but my last big project I want is good old American Steel , I think this truck may be that projects.
