Derrick Brown set the all time NFL record for tackles from the DT position and was consistently ranked 2nd or 3rd best DT in the league all year, yet pretty much nobody knows who he is or talks about him cause he plays on the Panthers. He's not even on the NFL top 100 players list this year, and was a major pro-bowl snub as well. He deserves so much more recognition, and has only improved his play every year.
Derrick brown is a dominant elite run defender, But Vita Vea did not see 100 opportunities to make a tackle, he only got that opportunity because he's on such a bad, horrifically awful, no good, practically amateur team, like holy shit are the Panthers a bad football team
@@felixlara2945 So him being on a bad team gave him the athletic ability and play recognition skills to make over 100 tackles in a single season? Even Aaron Donald, who is seen by most as the best DT in league history, couldn't do that whether the Rams were 2-14 or super bowl champions.
Both Ivan Pace and Josh Mettelus deserve a mention here too. They’re total weapons for Flores and as a packers fan, the first time we played them those guys gave us hell
I think Ivan Pace has gotten a good amount of recognition? His name has been mentioned by in the rookie context. Agree on mettelus though. People probably don’t understand what Flo had him doing.
Same with Hitman, another versatile defensive piece who loves to tourment QBs with the threat of the blitz. I think having someone senior in that group who knew how to disguise his intentions on every snap made them a lot more dangerous than they should have been.
@@punisher5598 yeah PFF ranked him 23rd in the league among off-ball LBs and he’s kinda got a cult following lol. But Metellus still needs more shine the dude is a weapon
I'd put Michael Carter II - nickel for the Jets in there. He had a phenomenal season last year. Like all-pro caliber type of season. But because Sauce gets so much attention, DJ Reed is considered a very good CB2, and the Jets drafted a RB also named Michael Carter in the same draft class, he's more commonly referred to as just "the other Michael Carter".
Said the exact same thing lmfao, he's so damn good. He's only gotten better since entering the league too. Really think he could put himself in that top 5, maybe even top 3 convo this year.
Number of tackles isn’t a very good stat. Not all tackles are created equal. If you have 200 tackles at an average of 5 yds downfield, it’s not as good compared to 120 tackles at an average of 2.5 yards downfield.
Grover Stewart is a dude. Just a wrecker. Ernest Jones reminds me of Teddy Bruschi sometimes. He just has a bunch of plays where he reads and reacts just like him. And trust me: I'm a Colts fan, and the number of plays where Bruschi did the exact thing he needed to blow up a play is burned into my brain. Edit: Also to add that again, as a Colts fan, I hated the Campbell extension. Not to compare every one to old Pats, but he reminds me of Ty Law.
FINALLY some Ernest Jones appreciation on TH-cam! EJIV is the heart and soul of the Rams defence now AD's retired, quietly one of the best ILBs in the game and nobody notices most of the time
I think Ernest Jones is going to get a lot more attention next year because he made a pretty good impact in the playoffs. The announcers and more serious talking heads usually remember that sort of thing. Maybe if he comes up with some good dance routines ESPN will feature him.
Grover is arguably just as if not more important to our defense than D'Fo. They are both monsters, if Latu develops into the edge rusher we need, our d line is gonna be nice if they can stay healthy. I've enjoyed watching Ernest Jones play whenever I've watched the Rams, admittedly not a lot. Another great topic and video Brett. Best place on youtube to learn more about the game, from a normal guy, it's great. Keep it up and thanks for the content over the years.
As a giants fan I must do my due diligence and mention how absolutely awesome Bobby okereke was last season. Dude was all over the field week in and week out and instantly fulfilled one of our biggest defensive needs over the past decade plus. He’s gonna ball out again this season and hopefully then he’ll get the respect he deserves
Nate Hobbs. He’s one of the best nickels, great at reading plays and an elite tackler for a corner. He’s been a staple on our defense since we luckily drafted him.
As a Jags fan. I was a little surprised by the Tyson Campbell pay because he was bad last year. But he might have been better if he wasn't recovering from injury. But nah I wouldn't say I agreed with the pay.
It's a surprisingly not bad payment for a true CB1 who likely hasn't even hit his prime yet. Jags fans might be lucky Campbell got injured. If Campbell was fully healthy, I have so little faith in Balke that I don't doubt he would have reset the market on both salaries and guarantees. He paid Lawrence like the prince that was promised, not the competent-but-limited QB1 he is.
Great list Brett. Love ernest jones and van ginkel! Feels like the list is missing a patriot though 😂. I nominate Jonathan Jones. He’s been so good for so long. Inside or outside
I think another guy who is really underrated is Kenny Clark. He's been a very good to great defensive since his breakout year in 2017, and was pretty good last year in the god-awful Joe Barry defense. He really is the staple of Green Bay's defensive line and deserves some more love from the media.
Fangio loves those swiss army knife edge rushers who are able to drop back and the Eagles taking Jalyx Hunt in the third round seems like he is going to be that same type of player for Philly.
It's always going to be so interesting to me the way rbs just crumble the second they make contact with nose tackles like Vea and Stewart, anybody else gets one hand on them and they just run through it but they get one hand on the RB and he just collapses immediately
I'm biased as a Pats fan, but Christian Barmore deserved a spot on here imo. One of the best interior pass rushers in the game. He basically won that game against the Broncos last year by himself lol, and that wasn't a one-off thing. I never see him get talked about, and I saw a lot of people (Patriots fans included, probably WEEI listeners) calling his new extension an overpay. I think we got a steal on that contract tbh, he could be Chris Jones 2.0.
Flores is always talking about how it’s the player’s defense. He is instilling confidence in the players, and expects them to play good rather than “correct.” I think that is where a lot of his play calling comes from.
Ernest Jones play in the super bowl his rookie year immediately put him on my watch list. He is a straight baller and learned from Wagner for a second. I can't wait to see what he does next year
8:10 I don't agree here tho. I think Tyson Campbell is underrated as a player in 2022 as well but if the Jags let him go most GM's would have needed to pay him that much because he had a down year
The Campbell contract bothered me just because of the injuries. If he can actually stay on the field, he'll perform up to the money. Once PS2 and McDuffie sign, people will completely forget about this signing unless Campbell is injured the whole time
As a colts fan I can assure you Grove is not overlooked 😂 him and Kenny Moore make our defense look so much better than what it is. Z Frank & DBuck are our playmakers but they’re the clean up crew.
Whats your Opinion on Uchena Nwosu? I think he is also highly underrated. The Seahawks Rush defense was in the Top of the league until he got hurt and the Hawks went to one of the worst Rushing Defenses
I've really liked Grier as the GM of my Dolphins. He's had his fair-share of blunders (drafting Eichenburg over Creed Humphrey will go down as his worst), and letting Ginkel go is easily one of his worst. Unless Gink just wanted to live back up north and the number he needed to stay in Miami was just too absurd, there's no sane reason why he should've been allowed to walk. I wouldn't have said Holland was underrated, but maybe it's just because I consume so much Dolphins coverage in comparison to other teams, and it's not like the media are constantly sucking-off a safety. I would've thought he'd be ranked at least top-five by media guys, but maybe I'm wrong and he is underrated. Side-note: Miami doesn't have a Cap Space issue, even if this video was made before Tua's contract. The plan for Miami is to offload contract over the next two offseasons to make room in the Cap for the foundational guys they have. They're going to trade and let go of guys like Chubb, Ramsey, Mostert, and Tyreek, saving a shit ton of money; plus Armstead will retire. Losing Hunt and Wilkins sucked, but it's part of the business and their skill-level didn't warrant the money they got elsewhere as far as Miami was (correctly) concerned. Miami has four foundational guys that'll be paid top-dollar: Tua, Waddle, Holland, and Jaelan Phillips. The first two are paid, and the latter will be paid before next season starts. Miami, just like every other competent franchise, is hoping that some of the younger guys can be turned into studs (for Miami, that's Patrick Paul, Chop, and Cam Smith) that can be the next set of foundational guys that they can sign to longer-term contracts at a slight discount in order to keep everyone. Draft and coach the rest the best you can, sign some veterans to fill holes, and scheme your hearts out. Miami never had an issue with their Cap, it was time to make some room due to two guys you drafted doing really well for themselves, and over the next two years they'll offload their quasi-rentals to make room for the young guys coming-up.
