He's a master of the narrative style. Even on his tunes that don't quite cut it, I remain listening just to hear the story... I say him in Manchester UK decades ago... Great, and observant... took just the right amount of piss out of us Brits... Love him. xxx ;-)
It's ironic and oddly touching how she paints him as a loser and dreams of what her life could have been until the end when they both smile about a place to stay and she really loves him. As it fades out in that hot dusty western lick.
+John Well They were only a cult band but the few of us who saw them will never forget them . Best band I have ever seen IMO. ps Stan R was only in the band 1979/83 he was replaced by Andy Preiboy and the band continued for another 5 years or so. But Stan composed very little of the band's music he was mainly a lyric writer . The Moreland Brothers' were the main composers in the band eg "Mexican Radio" was composed mainly by Marc M (rip) with help from his Brother Bruce. Andy composed and wrote lyrics eh the brilliant "wrong way to Hollywood" and by 1986 had developed in to a superb front man too.
Ridgway still had a huge influence in the band's sound though. I think a lot of the country-western and Ennio Morricone influence came from Ridgway. It continued after he left, too. The Morelands and Andy Prieboy are great songwriters too, though.
@@keithbate9405 My friend was their main roadie, and I hung out with them in the post-Stan days. Andy was no match for Stan's charisma. Marc Moreland was a gentleman and quite a good chap.
@@kappappa Marc Moreland was the main songwriter during the whole of WOV's career eg Mexican radio , and this coruscating track that nearly 40 years later sounds modern to me. The problem for WOV was that they were so far ahead of their time . Few people "got them " at the time . Stan was a great front man and a brilliant lyric writer.
@@waggsish Lucky you Timothy ! I met all the band in the 1980's at various gigs in England between 1982/88. I have numerous signed records (singles and Cd's) . I agree that Marc M was a true gentleman (rip) and he was the main songwriter in both incarnations of WOV. I am still in contact with Bruce M through e mail . We have a common interest Computer chess (!) . I agree that Stan had more Charisma than Andy but IMO Andy eventually became as good a front man as Stan (1986 onwards) . Andy IMO was also more talented than Stan . Andy wrote songs eg Wrong way to Hollywood , Don't spill my courage unlike Stan . But like Stan he wrote excellent lyrics too. He went on to write a musical too , and I believe now lives in Hollywood where he made a "lucky marriage" (rich !) ps Bruce gets annoyed when so many people think that WOV were Stan's band and wrote their music. esp Mexican Radio and Red Light. I have heard him say more than once "My Brother and myself wrote most of WOV's music not Stan. He contributed only bits of music , but mainly lyrics.
Love this band and love this song! Excellent lyrics. Stan was born in Barstow, CA. Not sure how long he was there, but love the references to the Mojave, deserts, I-15, and Vegas in a lot of their songs.
Yessir! Several years ago I set out from Missouri to L.A./Topanga Canyon one summer (on break from public school teaching) in my Subaru to see my dad's sister & my cousins whom I'd never met before. Originally I had planned to stop & see the Hoover Dam en route and stay at a nearby town...but...when I got to my exit all I saw were trucks pulled over and it was blocked by a barrier saying "Flash Flood". The truckers didn't speak my language or didn't dig gringo and it was getting dark, so a change of plan & I drove & drove after driving so long in the heat. I get to Barstow and find and old Motel 66 kinda place...huge rundown 2 levels with a pool/cabana. I check in...order a pizza for delivery and then proceed to take the world's best hot steamy shower EVER! ;-)
I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN WALL OF VOODOO AND STAN RIDGWAY. ONE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL AND SMART FUNNY BANDS OF THEIR TIME. TOO BAD THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES ENOUGH TO LAST A LITTLE BIT MORE TIME, SAY 50 MORE YEARS?

To me, this song perfectly capture the generation X era and became one of its most iconic anthem
Been listening to this song for 30 years and I hope there’s 30 more in me.
This song has been stuck in my head for days.

That was my favourite song of theirs back then, maybe along with "Me And My Dad".
i can't stop listening to it...
I had no idea this group was so good and versatile...
It sounds like a lost song but it's one of the most poetic song i ever heard. It also seems that everyone has forgotten WOV and stan Ridgway...

While on the military, each (scarce) W.E. perm, I had this song in my head. Another lost Week-End. Joy.
