American Bandstand 1968 -Rate A Record- Love In Every Room, Paul Mauriat

  • Neither of the two songs rated today ever charted and there isn’t much out there on Lee Jones (And the Unforgotten Two) - I Got To See My Baby or Bobby Brelyn - Bits and Pieces. Before they go to commercial break the kids dance to “Love In Every Room” which charted at #60 and was the follow up to Paul Mauriat’s #1 hit instrumental from earlier this year, “Love Is Blue”. (I kept it in after the “Rate A Record” segment because I liked the dancing of the few couples that stayed and well….I just thought the song was pretty 🙂)
Dancers: AB regular Frank Herrera, along with Patty Boyer, judge today’s songs while Kris Almanzan tallies the scores. Watch for Kris’s concerned look when she has to figure out the average of 50 and 75 after the first song. Other AB regulars dancing here include Buddy Schwimmer, Famous Hooks, Jenny Nichols, Theodosia Dayton and Frank Vanderpuil.
Incidentally, I asked Don Sanuskar (AB regular 1965-74) about the AM/FM portable phonograph often given as a prize for rating the record. With all due respect to the good people of Ross Electronics, (which no longer exists) as you might have guessed by the arm that pops off every time Dick opens it, it was “a piece of junk”.
…..And today toymaker Mattel introduced “Hot Wheels” toy cars in America. There were 16 original “tricked out” type cars introduced today. They were so wildly successful that Matchbox (and others) had to rethink their entire product line, which up until now had only been more city or "real life" type cars. Here are the Hot Wheels ”original sweet 16” from May of ’68:

It took me more than 50 years to track down "Love in Every Room"--8:16. I was four in 1968, and I clearly remember that haunting music. Beautiful.

I really enjoy listening to the 60's classics. It amazes me that teen would dance to these instrumental songs so elegantly and with class. I was born in 69 and would have wished to dance to these songs in the late 60s.

No kiddin'. That Karen Sokol blonde beauty from the '68 season was a knockout, as was Pat Moriarty. Just like high school, all the attention is directed at same tired "popular girl" hags

Always great to see footage of one of my favorite 1960s American Bandstand dancers Patty Boyer. Enjoyed the Hot Wheels reference. I was a big fan of those cool little cars growing up. I had that plastic orange track going all over the place with the supercharger to keep them moving at top speed. Great fun! Thanks Aaron for posting another excellent Rate-A-Record clip. - Jeff

I’ve enjoyed watching Patty since I first saw your tribute to her a few years ago on your channel (of this very RAR) And Hot Wheels were a staple in my toy collection as a kid too, although I never had the racing set, we just used pieces of wood tilted up on a platform, but it worked, lol! Thanks for the great comment Jeff!

Oh I remember those Ross Electronics portable record players. They were indeed kinda flimsy!
Happy 50th Anniversary to my favorite set of toys as a child - HOT WHEELS! A year later, ABC-TV aired the Hot Wheels cartoon series which lasted two years on the network (1969-1971) and was under a lot of scrutiny from the FCC. There were rules in place that prohibited companies from sponsoring children's programming (bad influences!). That's why the series didn't last past two seasons.
And watching the couples dance to Paul Mauriat made my morning! Thank you!

Wow! I LOVED Hot Wheels as a kid, but didn’t know about the TV series. I checked, and there is a clip of it on YT......and it starred good old Casey Kasem as one of the voices! Thanks for the great comment Kevin Goins!

A noteworthy tidbit: songwriter/producer Mike Curb composed the respective themes for "Hot Wheels" and "American Bandstand" that year.

Yes, most of the Rate-a-Record singles went nowhere. But in 1972 "Nice To Be With You" by Gallery scored very low on R-a-R (in the 40s I think) that even Casey Kasem mentioned it on AT40 while the single was making its way into the top 10 (peaking at #4). Also, this episode aired on my 12th birthday, I don't remember watching it.

Omg lol.. the first song was hot. I definitely was feelung the beat. It was soulful and good to dance to and do boogaloo and shingaling to it. I'm not from that era. I was born un 69 and the two kids that rated the first record have no soul! Great up in NJ next to NYC and we listen and dance to a lot of good underground soul dance house music.

YouCanDanceToit! brutally honest! LOL Aaron, between 35 and 98, I'd rate the "Hot Wheels" a 98! :-) Patty, Frank and Kris were really handed a couple of clinkers in this R-A-R ...
