I know everyone is talking about how good Colin is (and I agree), I really want to draw attention to Roger Allam as Prospero. It is a very difficult character to make likable because he is so all - powerful, manipulative and possessive of his power, yet he pulls it off with aplomb! He is also brilliant in Henry IV parts 1 and 2 as Falstaff.
I love Ariel's acting, his expression when he has forgotten. This performance displays elements of the text which I completely missed while watching the BBCWorldwide version (on youtube, but not great). Brilliant.
It was such a privilege to see this live!!!!! Colin Morgan is such an amazing actor. (Okay, EVERYONE in the show was amazing but I went because of Colin.)
I just read this play in my Shakespeare class at school and we saw a production of it a couple days ago. I love Colin's Ariel! The first word i thought to describe him was "bird-like" just the way he moves, but it makes total sense since he's an air spirit!! and how his version of ariel really does seem to have no idea what Prospero is talking about! i just love this clip! i really want to buy the DVD
I bought the dvd and it is brilliant. Colin is magnificent as Ariel (I loved his portrayal of Merlin and the gamut of emotions he shows) and I like Roger Allam as an actor too - I first saw him in Endeavour. They are amazing together, one playing off the other. Best version of the Tempest I have seen and they make it so accessible.
We were watching this in english yesterday and as soon as Colin came on screen and my teacher left the room, all you could hear from the back of the classroom was 'he's so beautiful' over and over haha . But Roger is incredible too oh wow!
I've never really imagined this scene played for comedy but it really works! Great characterisation having Prospero explode in anger, then quickly simmer down almost in regret at his own outburst before lapsing into defeated consternation.
I'm geeking because I once visited this theatre and walked on that stage and all I am thinking is either I walked where colin morgan walked or he walked where I walked.... such a nerd 😂
Wow. Seeing this performance w such high caliber acting brings out so much from the text & this is reflected in the audience's reaction. I recently watched the full play performed by a professional cast, who were themselves talented, but not quite as talented as the duo in this clip. Like myself viewing it on TH-cam, the audience present at that performance simply didn't respond as the audience does to these actors. Brilliant and they do justice to the old Bard's written dialog.
I enjoyed this play so much when I saw it on stage last Summer, and I look forward to enjoying it again on screen. It's amazing how the text is transformed when played. When I read it I didn't think it was a comedy, but watching it on stage I laughed and laughed.
Colin Morgan should not be only identified as Merlin. He is so talented. He started his career at the theatre and has since then been seen on television, at the theatre and in cinema.
I only know Colin Morgan. Unfortunately, I don´t know the other actors (I´m not British). They are good. By the way, what character does Colin Morgan play? (I don´t understand English very well)
In loads of versions they have that dark twisted sincerity which, don't get me wrong, is fine; but pretty unoriginal. This ver. with Ariel's /comedic/ dopiness and idiosyncrasy bodes well! Really refreshing to see!
Haha! Yeah it would be kind of difficult to understand such a random conversation like this without having read or seen the whole play. Basically Ariel is sort of like a spirit of the air who a witch named Sycorax (I may not have spelled that right) had imprisoned. Prospero freed him and now he's kind of like an indentured servant to Prospero until he earns his freedom. Ariel is upset and having an attitude here because he still has more to do for Prospero. Prospero gets angry in response telling Ariel he shouldn't be complaining because his time as a servant isn't even up yet! And he also reminds Ariel of the witch and how terrible his life was imprisoned by her and basically that Ariel has it MUCH better with Prospero now. Ariel doesn't remember all the particulars which frustrates Prospero as he has to constantly remind Ariel of Ariel's past life of imprisonment to get him to cooperate lol! :) Sorry that was really long! Hope it helps! Just looking at gorgeous, heart-fluttering Colin Morgan no matter what he's saying is worth it! Beautiful, talented man :)
Don't know where this performance happened but bloody glad I wasn't there, the audience thought it was a comedy with constant laughing as if an American sitcom, bloody painful.
I really don't like this version, in my opinion this scene is actually really sad and tragic and their playing it like comedy, really forced comedy. it doesn't work.
I love Colin Morgan as Ariel, he gives Ariel a young, innocent perspective!!! xx
Do you mean Merlin? :P

I agree with every word 🥰
Colin Morgan.... is so ethereally beautiful as Ariel

omg so lucky!!
I think Colin's performance of Ariel is one of my favorites, and that's saying something because that's one of my favorite Shakespearean characters.

Hast thou forgot the foul witch Sycorax, who with age and envy, was grown into a hoop? Hast thou forgot her?"
"......no, Sir...."
"Thou hast."
x'D
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS PRODUCTION. I wish I could go back in time and watch it all again.

Wow…this is a smart audience. How do they know when to laugh?
They laugh at the jokes....which you must have missed. Watch the actors faces.
Okay, I understand Shakespeare. Is it a crime?
Hehehe! Thanks :)
