i mean loot is an obvious problem. the filter hides it a bit but it is at a point it is hard on servers. i think they wanna fix rare mobs before they touch loot again and then adress crafting after that. ruthless is just nice to see things from a different angle, you are really happy about tiny things related to loot. if you could remove peoples expectations, less loot would be better but that genie is out of the bottle. same problem with mobs. they went crazy to keep up with movement skills. people just running to fast to get hit. that forced a horrible loop of increase mobs density, give mobs shitty mechanics on one side and people dashing all over the place on the other side. it at the point now that everything is designed about a player dashing nonstop or you die. i could keep going but thats probably the point of ruthless, to get a better perspective how all the problems are connected in a bare bones mode.
This mode could be a perfect basis for a roguelite mode, make the runs an hourish long with avg gear and randomise everything. Have out of game unlocks

This mode should have been standard. The normal game is totally overloaded and reflects some of the issues people are facing nowadays in terms of information and media overload. There is just too much stuff happening. It all evolved this way because GG needed to earn money and did so by adding more content. Less is more more than ever. It's completely weird that they removed movement skills though, this I don't understand. All mechanics should have been kept.
This is my wish fulfilled. I spent a lot of time in the forums writing about how fun BLAMT was. Time for me to get back into playing Path of Exile and play it on my own pace, SSFR, have fun building my own character. When I get better at it, go HC as well.
Ruthless mode = Vortex league from what I saw. The entire league design is setup specifically for streamers that live within this game. Once the new design smell wears off, this likely will fade away. I am more concerned if they are going to use Ruthless in tandem with normal PoE for balancing, since likely you are going to see very specific skills and metas develop here.
sounds like an alternative alongside standard, something you do once or twice to see how far you get, maybe a couple big spikes early on because people haven´t been through it before but doubt its something more than that, and that´s fine :)
I doubt I'll ever try it for more than a day or two, but if other people enjoy it then why not? Hopefully this opens up the possibility of more experimental modes aside from the league's.

Not taking away from game development it is just two developers... wait... two developers who could be working on the main game? Also, I am pretty sure people would've been happier if two developers made a mode that was the opposite of this put simply better damage on all gems particularly melee, more rarity/quantity, and enemies with less one-shot potential. That sounds even easier to accomplish then ruthless mode as it is literally some number tweaks and bam you get fun mode/casual mode/whatever you want to call it I want to have fun playing the skills I like instead of feeling locked into skills. Before anyone argues we aren't locked into skills then explain what a league start skill is as most games don't require you to play a skull you hate for hours and hours to gather up currency to attempt another build only to be disappointed your skill like RF walked straight to reds and your 10-20 div investment melee skill can either farm reds and six portals or farm yellows

TBH, If nobody can move fast, I don't have a problem moving slow. This happens a lot in PoE. For example MF-ing felt shit because you knew there were people abusing the loot piñatas. You knew some people were two-shotting bosses with L-Conduit so you felt bad using non-meta skills. The game feels bad when you know you're playing it "wrong" even though you don't need to play efficiently but the economy and your time begs you to... Jesus sounds too like real life lol
I'm really curious what the pros would list as recommended builds based on strength, gem availability, etc for Ruthless. Obv, Cold dot covered here but what else?
0:24 Yes, and with this we must remember that it is a game mode which reinforces the ideals of GGG with the game. 1:30 It's their vision, they hate that players have the ability to move and dodge the way it's used to. Whether it is good or bad, removing that ability is irrelevant, the problem is not whether or not you have that ability, but rather that the enemies are capable of making you unable to move as normal with so many debuffs movement speed reductions and action speed reductions And regarding the Tweet, those words are not all the player's words, that is his experience and how he feels and perceives, in order to determine that what he says is true and not an anecdotal fallacy have to do a study. 1:38 It is the same game but extra steps. I understand the logic behind the point, but it's not quite like that, rather I'd say it's what GGG wants the base game to be. And that between "it's not the same game" and the current state of the game is properly given by not seeing the path that GGG has been *trying* the last few patches. And I say *trying* since every time they try, the community comes upon them (you included).
I’m new to Poe and I like ruthless more than regular rn bc it takes a lot of the crap you gotta learn and strips it. You just gotta figure out the game using passives, it’s fun. Getting skills is dope bc you don’t have any. It’s not like oh shit here’s 35 things to read and guess what’s good.
Its very interesting to hear that much more experienced player than you have no exp with temporal rift dodges while you just simply adore that skill since it was released, lol.
I would love a mode of the game where the drop rates for the best uniques and currency are increased 10,000% but it’s ssf and if you record any gameplay you are instantly killed IRL by spontaneous human combustion.
I'm actually quite interested in this mode. I haven't played PoE in like 2 years now and have been waiting for an opportunity to play a bit again and this sounds fun to me.
Wait, no Crafting Bench either?! I was thinking of Ruthless as kind of a "gotta use your game knowledge to min/max" mode, where vendor recipes and such are immensely important; but no Crafting Bench seems like a mistake..
Even though this is a “side project”, I feel it’s harmful to the PoE brand and future of the game. Path of exile doesn’t have to be a game for literally everyone. If people want a tedious slow game then let them find that game elsewhere.
The biggest benefit of ruthless mode is that people will finally stop bitching that poe is "too easy". They can suffer in ruthless and rest of the playerbase can have fun in the normal game
I mean there are clearly levels of nuance here. Ruthless, as Ziz said, is not PoE. But let's say hypothetically, PoE becomes way faster than it is now and people can get mirror tier gear extremely easily (an absurd scenario, I know), then I can totally see justification for wanting to tune up the difficulty in the main game. Saying "Oh just play Ruthless" misses the point. We can apply the same reasoning to how the game is now from the hypothetical scenario.
Ruthless is not poe. If they made a league where you have 1 hp and cannot raise it it would be even deadlier, but guess what, nobody is going to play that. People want difficulty, not length. You can have fun in normal poe as do thousands of others, just spend more time thinking and less saying dumb stuff
@@Luca48882 In that case why people play SSF? The game is clearly balanced around trade. Why people play hardcore? The game is not designed to not contain oneshot mechanics. Maybe you'd know that if you spent more time thinking and less saying dumb stuff
@@Yomush People play SSF because they either have too much time on their hands like streamers or fall in the same logic mistake as you did in the original comment. SSF is not a harder mode, it's harder by being longer which is bad design. People who play HC want an actual challenge, and in fact HC actually makes the game harder but many peope like me have hardware issues, and while HC is more honest if you lose a character you still get dozens of hours wiped, and many people want the difficulty but can't afford that. Just imagine giving 1 life to any game, literally any, and you'll understand it's not so appealing. So while HC CAN technically make you waste more time than SSF in HC it's on you, in SSF it's completely out of your agency other than a couple target farming ways. Playing HC also allows more builds, SSF you HAVE to start with a non-reliant build otherwise you risk gimpig your progress. Have you been around with old DD, reflect and volatile? You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. There are a lot of abilities that are intended to oneshot, even from normal mobs (the bone thingy that killed Quinn in the lake, any mob with a jumping attack like rhoas, shield charge or leap slam, just check their modifiers if juiced just a bit). Whether something is in line with the design or not it's for the devs to decide, I just made an example of how difficult doesn't necessarily equal difficult, which was literally your main point I'll also edit, don't know why balanced around matters, if there's a mode you play it, doesn't matter if the devs care about it or not. It's you who wants to forcefully send others to other modes, not me. I'm just underlining the logic issues with that. If you want to copy an edgy reply make sure you're not actually embarrassing yourself. You simply cannot have fun if you do not understand what's going on in the game you play. I'll also edit a second time since I didn't read the double negation in the HC part. Still, don't know what that's up to. What does the point of being contrary to the design or actual balance/state of the game have to do with the game mode? It's not like I'm saying don't play Ruthless because poe is made to drop stuff, It would be something like don't play ruthless because you can't craft/experiment, which are the basics and main selling points of poe, and that would be very logical, while not dying to oneshots or always being able to find certain items are not the main selling points. And even then, I didn't use that argument, you just randomly introduced it
Hot take, it should be a default mode. I always got a strange twitching in my eye when I see "rare" equipment droping left and right whenever I sneeze.
exactly, im all for giving people the option to play the way they want, but you have to go both ways. Im sure itll never happen but they absolutely should make an easy mode.
"Its not taking away any developement time" is such a lame excuse. It obviously takes up ressources, changes dont just appear out of nowhere. Some people are putting time into it. This wouldnt be as much of an issue if leagues were doing well, but with the current state of the game this is just silly to hear. Minion changes were not "extensively tested" as claimed. There is absolutely no way. Loot changes just happened under the radar until people discovered them because they werent even communicated properly internally. This isnt even about not liking some changes. The team just feels incredibly mismanaged and unprofessional as of late.
The argument that “Ruthless is fun because every item is a meaningful upgrade” basically sounds like “being poor is fun because every dollar is a meaningful upgrade” to me.
I am glad people are liking this new mode. Completely the wrong way for me though, hope they bring out a mode with insanely buffed drops so I can maybe craft for once.
Isn't mapping an issue? Like specifically just having enough currency to roll your maps.. even just for completion. Like vaaling red tiers. Or how are map drops in general?.. grinding out gear is one thing, but the mapping progression seems like it'd be a massive pain in the ass.
I believe who done this project in their own spare time like GGG said should get a raise because they could find the excitement factor that some may like it. Its not about being rich and buying mageblood every league, but about being happy and amused when playing it and i think ruthless, with it currency and items scarcity can do that. Thats my 5 cents on it only.. not the unquestionable truth. Just wanted to share with you guys
Probably won't try it out. This is just me but I don't really see anything about Ruthless that's worth playing for me. It's just a slower game mode with the same goal in the end no matter what mode you play on. That means you need more time invested in Ruthless than you would have in other modes. It's kind of weird for me that unless you enjoy the slower gameplay, there isn't really any point in playing Ruthless. You have little time to spare? Ruthless needs even more time invested than normal league. Play by your own pace? There is standard where you can play ssf or trade. Want a more punishing game? Hardcore it is for you. Still want to enjoy all these aspects but with a more active playerbase? League SSF/HC it is. So unless you're into the slow and punishing(?) thing, then there really isn't anything much worth going into Ruthless for. The punishing is because everyone's skill and experiences are different. If you're good, it doesn't really matter. You will still reach maps fast. After all, most who play this game mode aren't new players anymore. You know what you need to do. And once you reach maps, it's back to the same thing you did every league which is farming currencies and upgrading your build but just taking longer to do. All in all, unless 3.20 league is very bad and I don't have anything else to do (which I do have things to do besides PoE), I wouldn't give this a try. The game isn't harder, you're just weaker. Slowing doesn't make it hard, but more time is needed is all. Time doesn't equate to harder difficulty. Still the same thing and you can overcome most of them with experience. Things I would be interested in would be something new like new skill gems, supports, bosses, etc. that would add to the game rather than subtract from it. I would like more options/choices, not less. It doesn't necessarily have to buff or nerf the players or monsters. Just more choices.
@@TheDankFarmer Uh, perhaps you might not realize but the whole point of Ruthless is to be harder...? That's basically what all this is about... Might want to recheck and think things again before saying that Ruthless isn't suppose to be harder but slower. Slow doesn't mean it's hard. Ruthless is suppose to be the "hard mode" that the few and CW has been all about. Did you feel I was gaslighting you when all I'm doing is pointing out obvious stuff? Stuff that you probably don't even realize before and now gets you thinking that you might not like or prefer Ruthless after all? And something is cringe only because you feel like it and it somehow disturbs you. And if you think what I wrote above is an essay, oh boy. I don't know what to say except go read an essay. They could have easily just called it "PoE Classic" because it just feels like the 2013 experience again.
Except I don't think they rebalanced the mobs back to that level. If they did. this would be a pretty cool mode
@@Xqvvzts it's true the mobs aren't at their old power level, but that's fine because it still has the same feeling when you factor everything else. The same monsters I had to worry about back then are the same ones I worry about now. Although Perpetus isn't the run ender he used to be =P
I think that's telling is 2 senior developers are passionate enough about hardmode to work on this in their spare time, so we're told. If that's true then it makes sense when Chris says "extensively tested" the senior people might actually think 3.19 loot drop rate at release was totally fine when the most of us don't feel the same.
i mean loot is an obvious problem. the filter hides it a bit but it is at a point it is hard on servers. i think they wanna fix rare mobs before they touch loot again and then adress crafting after that.
ruthless is just nice to see things from a different angle, you are really happy about tiny things related to loot. if you could remove peoples expectations, less loot would be better but that genie is out of the bottle.
same problem with mobs. they went crazy to keep up with movement skills. people just running to fast to get hit. that forced a horrible loop of increase mobs density, give mobs shitty mechanics on one side and people dashing all over the place on the other side. it at the point now that everything is designed about a player dashing nonstop or you die.
i could keep going but thats probably the point of ruthless, to get a better perspective how all the problems are connected in a bare bones mode.
This looks like POE back in beta, but with the full 10 acts.
This mode could be a perfect basis for a roguelite mode, make the runs an hourish long with avg gear and randomise everything. Have out of game unlocks
It's a decent idea, but I think that three months is too little time for a character. If the characters carried over to the next league I might be interested.
As I understand Ruthless is not bound to the league, so you dont lose everything at end of the league.
Yeah it's not a league thing. These characters stay like standard
@@asgasdg09a8sd So are there current league mechanics in there? Or just legacy?
@@j.d.6915 I'm not sure which mechanics are in there. Guessing the lakes aren't but some other things are. I saw essence, alva. I'm not a part of the alpha but that's my understanding. That characters will stay on and it's not a league
@@j.d.6915 most of the league mechanics exist but are much less rewarding. If it's like standard then at the end of the league anything that stays permanent gets patched into standard
Just a quick question would Bane and choas dot be something to look into as your damage links can be curses which you can get as main skill gems, plus still use Soul tend and other supporting skills or is it just going to be a cold dot meta
So are Vaal side areas like the gosu areas for gems?
I believe vaal side areas are disabled in ruthless.
oh baby. I have been waiting for this
This mode should have been standard.
IS there any way to reset the atlas for alt characters during leagues?
What music is playing in the beginning of the video?
sounds like an alternative alongside standard, something you do once or twice to see how far you get, maybe a couple big spikes early on because people haven´t been through it before but doubt its something more than that, and that´s fine :)
"I'm trying to trade my pride for a blasphemy" XD
Question: is it possible to target and change a specific modifier on a piece of gear without having to worry about re-rolling the other mods on it?
Hardcore ruthless, what a Mad man. ^^
I doubt I'll ever try it for more than a day or two, but if other people enjoy it then why not?
Hopefully this opens up the possibility of more experimental modes aside from the league's.
i love how even in the vids he has osrs running, keep them gainz
Im quite excited for ruthless. Because rare items that we now would just throw on the ground are going to be very valuable and even considered exalt worthy. It will be about FINDING items again, not crafting BiS.
I mean thats just cope though cause u can say that now but will u be saying that after u start doing maps and have to fight endgame bosses. (no because u are going be doing blank white maps for a month and farm blood aquaducts everytime u run out of maps)
@@Siegram999 the time ive enjoyed poe the most was in beta 2012-2013. back then you had to exalt maps to (maybe) sustain them.
Chris: Jokes on you Ruthless is current PoE 2 version.
now that we have maschocist mode can all we other people get FUN back to the normal game?

@@divinityai Hope so as well. Not my cup of tea :) But if people enjoy it then that is good.
Seetheing so hard fam. GGG has 103 empployees currently so 2 devs isn't a massive loss. If you don't want to go through league start just play standard.
@@eamoncarroll7708 I did play standard this past league idk if you have done that but not only are prices 10x league cause people who have had time to make excessive currency in past leagues combined with very few people trading, but what currency I did have wasn't divines so I was stuck playing the exact builds I'm complaining about
I'm planing to play ruthless in standard at the end of 3.20 and generally at the end of leagues.
This video was very helpful, thank you!
It's like you have a supercar and only use the reverse gear to drive while looking out the rear window.
Gives me open beta vibes from back in the day, can't wait to try it out tbh.
Having less and less fun with the modern version of PoE (Lake killed it for me), so yeah it would be a nice throwback to the game I learned to love.. even though I must admit I look at the old days with rose tinted glasses
This. I was thinking the same thing watching him snail his way across Wraeclast.
6:51 chain hook + hydrosphere for the extra difficulty lol
I like this game alot. This ruthless mode + hardcore kind of creates a roguelite mode. I like it.
huh, that temporal rift ability is essentially Ekko ultimate from league of legends, I think I might actually be good at using it!
0:24 Yes, and with this we must remember that it is a game mode which reinforces the ideals of GGG with the game.
1:30 It's their vision, they hate that players have the ability to move and dodge the way it's used to. Whether it is good or bad, removing that ability is irrelevant, the problem is not whether or not you have that ability, but rather that the enemies are capable of making you unable to move as normal with so many debuffs movement speed reductions and action speed reductions
And regarding the Tweet, those words are not all the player's words, that is his experience and how he feels and perceives, in order to determine that what he says is true and not an anecdotal fallacy have to do a study.
Seethe harder
ggg : takes a long time to get to maps. ziz: shows map gameplay after 20 hours
That's actually pretty darn long by Ziz's standard, so yes. It does take a long time ;)
What is that build are u play? can some give me a pastebin or video? thx ^^
Gonna be honest, ziz saying that solution to corrupting blood is to just macro log out is so lame, balancing the game around it feels really lazy
Never expected to see someone starting end game say this blue helmet with 2 mods is amazing. Tough times create tough people.
Is there any difference about performance with this mode? Wonder if they can draw something about that from it, esp for groups
Nah, same game, just lower droprates. Performance should be same
I will be playing ruthless standard as my only game mode I think
gauntlet on ruthless lets goo
Ruthless Gauntlet let's go!
Its very interesting to hear that much more experienced player than you have no exp with temporal rift dodges while you just simply adore that skill since it was released, lol.
I mean if you're cruising through maps in under 20 hours on HC the mode has pretty much failed already, what a shame.
The second biggest lie in any videogame. "... side project ... doest take development from the actual game.".
I would love a mode of the game where the drop rates for the best uniques and currency are increased 10,000% but it’s ssf and if you record any gameplay you are instantly killed IRL by spontaneous human combustion.
Plot twist: Ruthless with its whole loot and item system is PoE 2.
This seems amazing! Excited to run some streams of it.
Love you ziz and chat :)
Whether something is in line with the design or not it's for the devs to decide, I just made an example of how difficult doesn't necessarily equal difficult, which was literally your main point
I'll also edit, don't know why balanced around matters, if there's a mode you play it, doesn't matter if the devs care about it or not.
And even then, I didn't use that argument, you just randomly introduced it
@@Luca48882 Thanks for the paragraph. Maybe i'll read it later
Whens the new league?
Hot take, it should be a default mode. I always got a strange twitching in my eye when I see "rare" equipment droping left and right whenever I sneeze.
You know that sh*t's real when streamers are bothering to pick up scrolls while in maps.
Finally. Perfect streamer mode
Oh yeah... I thought this was a new ARPG! I forgot they renamed Hard Mode. Thanks for the insights.
Easy mode with old harvest when?
exactly, im all for giving people the option to play the way they want, but you have to go both ways. Im sure itll never happen but they absolutely should make an easy mode.
Amazing Runrescape content :3 I want more
it is the best mode! thanks GGG
so far i am having very good time in ruthless and going to play alot more
It is not for me, but i can see why GGG want to make this mode.
I picked this by accident got to map device and noticed I don't mind but damb man no leapslam is rough 😢
Are the rolls the same as regular PoE? If so, the low currencies would just frustrate me due to the amount of rolls I need to make per gear.
Using cold dot occultist just like 95% of everyone. Been playing ruthless since the 12th, and it's a scourge.
I am glad people are liking this new mode. Completely the wrong way for me though, hope they bring out a mode with insanely buffed drops so I can maybe craft for once.
Perfect dopamine detox game-mode
Isn't mapping an issue? Like specifically just having enough currency to roll your maps.. even just for completion. Like vaaling red tiers. Or how are map drops in general?.. grinding out gear is one thing, but the mapping progression seems like it'd be a massive pain in the ass.
I wish they had made an overhaul of gear progression and drops in general for this game mode. Fully ssf, maybe group play with no trade balancing.
Super interesting to see which sort of "side projects" that make it into the game & what "senior devs" spend their time working on.
It's like an Uber private league
I for sure wanna give this a try.
@@TheDankFarmer because most people crying for ruthless insist its ""harder"" lmao.
Call it what it is. More mindless grind.
I just space it out more because it would obviously makes it much more easier to read.
Duuuude those boots are crazyyyyyy
