When the 3 characters are on the roof, Said (the arab guy) says "Look i'm gonna shut off the eiffel tower" and snaps his fingers, to which Hubert (the black guy) answers "it only works in movies, dumbass", Suggesting that it has been repeated so many times in movies. But then a few moments later when they leave the eiffel tower shuts off. Maybe kassovitz reminded us that it was actually just a movie, and this story is deemed to repeat itself.
Why I chose to to interpret it that way was because of the "repitition" theme showing up several times, The very first and the very last scene where Saïd closes his eyes suggests that the movie is a time loop these banlieusards are stuck in. Also the cow is a symbol for repitition in jewish culture.

How does the cow symbolize that? Not trying to be antagonistic. Legitimately interested in your interpretation

@@sbakernyc5761 There is a superstition that if a cow enters your garden, someone in your family will die. When the movie starts, we learn that the friend of the gang, Abdel, was beaten while in police custody and is in critical condition in the hospital. We learn that there was mass rioting and violence due to public outrage and anger at the police. In my opinion, the cow represents the police and the garden is the neighborhood. Throughout the movie the gang gets into altercations with the police who are patrolling the neighborhood after the violence of the other night. In the end, it is Vinz, the one who saw the cow during the riots and the one who constantly brings up the cow, who dies. The superstition is fulfilled, someone in the gang, which is as tight as a family, dies.

@@homr @Orbit @SBakerNYC and in France we have a "expression" which is "mort aux vaches" that we can translate to "death to cow" and its refer to the police "(cow = police) so its basically just "death to cop" and the director Matthieu Kassovitz said in a interview that he was inspired by that phrase back then for that scene !

What I got from that scene and those lines was that; those movies are fake, idealised fantasies that don’t really exist - this is reality as it actually is. Imperfect.

Interesting. That's not how I interpreted that DJ scene at all. To me, the music represents a spirt flying free from the shackles of poverty, oppression, inequality, and desperation. The Scene Represents Hope. Music Respresents Life.

My French teacher told us that it's a way of showing that the French people in the banlieue are just as French as the people in Paris, for example. The way they mix a classic French song with a modern rap song showing that while they're different, they're also living in the same world with the same rules and things.

    • @sbakernyc5761

I tend to agree more with you. However I think the beauty of this movie is the fact that so much of it is open to interpretation. Borderline arbitrary. I'm sure much of this was by design, as it forces us to think, and analyze it both as outsiders, and from the point of view of Said, Vinz and Hubert.

For me it feels like a direct response to the very assimilation heavy attitude the French seem to have … like when u move to France ur expected to call urself French and leave behind ur old culture and that falls in direct contrast to the way a lot of African and middle eastern cultures feel abt it …

"C'est une histoire d'une société qui tombe et qui se répète sans cesse, au fur et à mesure de sa chute:
    'Just-qu'ici tout va bien
    Just-qu'ici tout va bien
    Just-qu'ici tout va bien'
    Mais l'important, c'est pas la chute. C'est l'atterrissage."

I loved the story of the guy from the restroom. I think it was an analogy for the necessity of relentless brutality when one seeks to evoke change:
If you shit in the bushes, history will forget you. Gotta have the balls to expose yourself for all to see if you want to make an impact.

And these are more visible minorities among many in French society. Remember the Asian store owner who were being harassed by these three? I saw him in other films as a notable character so not exactly a part time actor. And Vinces sister? Who Saïd said he'll cut her throat like they dispatch animals in Halal tradition? And Saïd's own sister who got like 20 seconds of screen time and got told by her brother to go home and study? For some these three are the big guys.

3:38 that's your dolly zoom from Scarface (1983). Great Movie. One of my favourites. especially because I don't need subtitles!
by the way, it's not a b to pull off.. Auto Focus, and drag out the cam on glidecam/gimbal. Then in post, zoom out, or make the video smaller.. I recommend you shoot in 4K and deliver in 1080

This analysis, dissection or vivisection if you like ruins what is a very good film. Most people are sufficiently intelligent to draw their own conclusions on this piece without some pseudo intellectual patronising BS being rammed down our throats.
Its like someone who feels the need to dissect a joke, just longer, it completely ruins it. Most critics are a pain in the ass.
