FINALLY. An actual video about the history and origin of waacking. So much false information out there, so I'm glad I can just post your video whenever I see false information floating around. Thanks so much, Kumari! 😘💖💝
+Kumari Suraj Yes ma'am! I just seriously got into waacking about six months ago. And my friends and I (who have been, I guess, tutoring me) will be seeing you in Dallas in August! We can't wait! Thanks for the reply!
This is amazing. Everyone wants to appropriate the dance and the culture, but I never see people show this kind of love for its origins. You really make my heart swell with this. Also, I've only ever known the east coast side of the story. Everything about the LA side you talk about here is entirely new information to me. Thank you!
Could you please share the "East Coast side of the story", if that's not a burden for you? I'm a baby waacker who is trying to learn the dance's history, and there is so much misleading info. :)
As a gay man who's always been "at home" in the style of waacking, thank you so much for creating this video. I've been dancing for years and it's always been a struggle to explain what waacking was to others because of all the conflicting resources online. I'm going to show my fellow dancers this. :)
You are so very welcome. It's taken me 13 years to figure this out because of conflicting sources. I completely understand you. I'm glad it is helpful. Share away. Continue to dance free. 😊
I am so lucky to have seen and taken class with Kumari when she came to SF. She made the class feel so inclusive. And her performance for "Say My Name" was so beautiful. I may try to take waacking again. I was trying to learn hip/hop and house at that time, but at times it felt so intimidating.
watching this cause i had my first dance battle yesterday and i decided to showcase waacking! it was such a fun experience and im glad i was the first waacker to audition. i rlly want to make this genre known more
Thank you very much for sharing this video on the history of Waacking, I was involved with this dance at Ginos, I dance and knew this amazing dancers. Michael Angelo was always giving me Ideas when I would dance in a grand final. Love these guys. Ginos 1978
Christopher Campos thank you for commenting and sharing your beautiful experience. This is such a stunning art form and we owe it to your generation for bring it to life for us. 🙂🙏🏽 Thank you.
Thank you so much for this gem! Pop culture needs to be educated on the legit facts of this art! So much great information from this that gives me new perspective on my craft. Sending love and blessings
I don't aspire to be a great waacker, or anything of the sort, but I want to thank you so much for this knowledge! Just because I don't see myself rockin the style doesn't mean that I don't want to know as much as I can about it. I love the All Styles community, and the way it brings different genres of dance together. I have always been curious about waacking since the big boom it's had in the battle scene over the past few years.
I'm grateful you appreciate this! It's such a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge about the things around you. Even if you don't participate. Keep seeking. 😊🙏🏽
THIS IS BRILLIANT!! How did I miss all this but how do I recognize it? I grew up on Soul Train as an only child in MD/DC area. I write about kinetic orality in my work. Would love to connect. So amazing and sad it is not viral!
I brought Shabba Doo to Providence Rhode Island back in 2016 to teach some classes for me. He spent 3 days here in my city and loved the local scene and people, and one of those classes was - "whacking"" During our time together, we had a lot of talks about popping, locking, and whacking. It was a great time. I always wondered what it was he was doing in the films, flying his arms around and jumping about lol. I miss Him he was a great dancer and a good friend of mine.
I'm happy to share this with my new course at Manor College! It's been a while since I've seen you, hope all is well with you and the growth of your career and life!
Just revisited this to share with some people who asked me about my style- if they are curious I always start them with this video. THANK YOU! You are amazing
This is just GREAT! Thanks for sharing to the world, great video, information and everything!!. And Viktor Manoel, Lore y Lily felicidades por hacer que el Waacking se difunda con mayor profundidad en México :)
Thank you so much for making this video. I am just starting my journey and this has been invaluable in helping me to understand the origins of waacking. I love you too btw
Finally i got to know about Waacking. Seriously want to learn this form, n it's nice if v know the roots...m glad i found reliable after so much of attempts. Thank you Soo much. Seeing myself as a nice performer 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
Thank you so much for this knowledge I am from Mississippi and there is not a single dance crew around except ours we find what we can online but it's mostly wrong. This video and your waack vs vogue has helped so much with the uncertainty of looking like the other style. Hopefully one day in my travels I will meet you and gain more knowledge! much love!
I love it! Can't wait for more... I've been watching waacking battles online for a while now, and knowing some of this makes it all make sense-- the theatricality, for example Special shoutout to Montreal waackers; Montreal has a great waacking scene
Amazing explanation!! Even to me, one guy who is Brazilian man and like to study and practice music and dance. Congratulations for your work. It's so important to consolide and expande the dance around the work. Thanks! And, so sorry about my English. I don't speak very well.
House Head that came up late 80's in Chicago, only getting a little exposure to vogueing via Madonna. Thanks SO SO much for this very informative piece on the historic roots of club dance/music!! Great to see waacking coming back strong.
Love this. Learnt so much and now I need to know more. My perspective on waacking has been reborn. Can not not wait immerse in exploring more. THANK YOU!
Thank you god bless!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been trying to become better at all aspects of waacking and have been trying to expand my knowledge on the history of waacking. so thank you again!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHEN WE ENTERED THE ZONE (Hard ass Break Dancers & B boys would be the 1rst to circle around us) THAT'S WHEN U KNOW U ARE WAAKING!! THE BEAT IS HIT SO FKN HARD IT'S LIKE U ARE THE KICK & THE SNARE!!!!
It's an awesome video for briefing us and gaining more knowledge about this dance style as well as it's origin... Please do keep posting more videos and thanks for your help ma'am 😇
Hi @Kumari Suraj, thank you so much for this video! I was wondering where is the Diana Ross footage available? I can't seem to access the links in the description. I am hoping to find good quality footage to complete a visual project on the history of waacking. Sophie, waacker from Montreal
+Kumari Suraj ;) p.s. where did the drama element come from, why is it here and what is it about? is it related to i.e. acting and old Hollywood movies and dramatic character of at least some of them if not all, the reality of oppressed gay people back in the day, drama and action present in the old disco records?
+Margaret S go through the links I put In the description. Watch the links from the punk segment. You will be able to answer those questions on your own after watching them. Let me know what you find. Happy hunting 😊❤️😉
thank you so much for the much needed information on the origin of waacking. I love this dance form and i m surely gonna improve my style by following you
Hi Kumari! Thank for the precious knowledge! I'm literally jotting down notes on my notebook so I will be able to understand and remember the culture and history of waccking so I can explain and share my limited knowledge to people who wants to learn more about the culture of waacking! This is also so I will be able to relate and apply it whenever I dance! However, one thing, I still do not quite understand was the part where you say punking is the action, and waacking is the reaction, (chicken before the egg kind of thing). Would you mind explaining it in simpler terms for people like me who are not exactly good in english thank you! Love from, Singapore :)
Hi Chase. I'm glad this was helpful. Punking came first. Hence it is the initial Action. Whacking is a response or reaction to the initial Action. Whacking is the response and came second after the inspiration of Punking. Hope this helps.
Did Waacking influence Vogue in NYC clubs? There's a lot of similarities in the dance except (imo) vouge is us slower, hit your move and pose (saying it broadly).
Wow! I loved the dance, but had no idea of its beautiful historical significance!.. Thank you so, so much for this... * * * Without looking through the comments, i'm guessing that you get a lot of flack about your wording of transgender people in this contribution. If so, i'm personally in no position to whack the flack, but i just want to say that i see your heart being in the right place when you say it. :-) i appreciate you.
this woman & princess lockaroo are some of my hugest dance influences! u nailed it Lady Kumari! its funny.. I remember sometime ago I had tweeted u saying I'd love nothing more than to get mentored by u if u were to ever come to Cleveland Ohio. I'm saving up to either move out to LA or NYC or LA to follow my Dancing/Singing dreams fully. but until than I encourage & would be utterly honored if u checked out & even shared my channel as a starving artist trying to get my name out there I'd be lieing if I didn't at least asked. especially coming from a influence of mine like yourself gosh that be soooo humbling
Inshallah we should meet and dance. Until then never stop following your dreams. Be strong. Be courageous. Enjoy the ride. It's a fun one. I will check out your work. :) Be encouraged.
After this (great) video, I was wondering: shouldn't we reclaim the word punking back since it was basically erased by ""correctness politics"", pushing back the very people that initiated this style? Or is it just too different from the OGs now and too far beyond the lgbt community and should keep being called it this way?
The name is kinda reclaimed. A bunch of people including Viktor Manoel, Ana Sanchez, Alyssa Chloe ,Bagsy , Kumari as well and alot more people actually do use the term but depends on who you listen to and watch they use the word in slightly different or similar contexts.

'Simple Mind's - I Travel' jam & 'Visage - Moon Over Moscow' (gave away Top Secret fact) were the primary jams and signal to strut your shit. Guys, girls and the gays. I see it's gone to means of expression, instead of making love to the jam.

I’m glad you mentioned Tyrone Proctor in this piece. He passed this year back in June. Also let’s give a moment of silence to Shabba Doo who passed
You are correct. This video is old and will be updated as you suggested. Thank you for your comment.

This how I and we did it in East L.A. (California, USA) from early 80s to late 80s hardcore disco parties and clubs, before House came in. All East L.A. DJs played it All the fevre's (Tony Manero) came out. Unfortunately we did not have video (lucky) to Don Quixote's Olympic Blvd, Casa Camino Real (DTLA) and HS dance parties by the promoters.

I see it's gone to means of expression, instead of making love to the jam.
I'm kinda sad that I became bad in Waacking when I started popping
This reminds me of Vogue-ing just with a few more moves
do a video like this for voguing please
I have a difference between Waack and Vogue video. But, I feel someone from Vogue culture should create their video. :)
YAAAAAAS
Yaaaaaas
I love,communicate the message of waacking❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️
THANK YOU
Do you need to have a dancing background or experience to get started on Waacking?
Of course the hets took the dance and changed the name to strip it off its queer roots. Let’s never forget its origin! I’ve been fascinated with it ever since I first found out about it.
