It's such a treat as a Steelers fan to watch breakdowns like this. I always learn something new. Really appreciate the time and effort to make these vids, thanks JT!
I still believe Kenny could be our franchise guy but this Sunday’s game against the Jags will be another real test. They have a tougher D up front than the Rams. Our O line must be better or Kenny is in for a long day. But thanks for your valuable insights on his production.
Thank you for evaluating Kenny. I know your not excited to do the Steelers Offense because of the lack of creativity. We appreciate you. Keep up the great Work. "Go Steelers"
This is no big mystery. Canada's so called system is completely against Kennys strengths. He missuse the Kenny and the receivers too. I think, in fourth quarter he open up his poor playbook and try other things. Defenses surprised cause most of the game they know exactly what's coming. We all know it: Two runs for 2-4 yards trough the middle. Than on 3rd and 6/7 a curl route.
@@StandgedichtStop it. Kenny is the most inaccurate qb in the league. That’s not an opinion, it’s a fact backed by the stats. He routinely misses throws and reads. People trying to make Canada the scapegoat for everything simply don’t t know what they’re talking about. Personally, I think he’s thinking too much during the first 3 qtrs and is in his own head. 4th qtr comes and he doesn’t have time to think he just plays. At least that’s what I’m hoping as a Steelers fan. There’s no excuses for how he plays in the first 3 qtrs tho. Canada and his offensive schemes aren’t the main problem. There is no "concept" all played the exact same routes and no one has a run game.

@@Standgedicht this is only Canada’s 3rd year. What 4 QBs? Ben WAS done his last year(last couple years actually). You can call that an “excuse” if it makes you feel better. Ben didn’t run Canada’s offense anyway. He ran the same offense he ran before Canada got there. Mitch isn’t a starting nfl qb Kenny might not be either. Do you understand what you’re seeing or not? If you understand, then you see that there are tons of plays that kenny has left out on the field that were there to be made. That’s not an opinion, it’s a fact. Teams have no hesitation loading the box and taking the run away because Kenny hasn’t proven that he can beat you from the pocket. Is Canada’s offense perfect? Of course not, but don’t lie to yourself and pretend that Kenny is executing the offense at a high level and the schemes just don’t work.
at 23:30, pickens sees the safety he fouled earlier flying in to take his head off and bails. without that foul he hangs in there, but i think in the moment he made the right call protecting himself. of course kenny if kenny throws on time it's a non-issue

Man JT i love how you break down film and the personality you bring. As a a steelers fan you really pointed out whats going on and how close the team is sometimes keep it up!!
Love your content, wish this was available when I was coaching qbs. As a Steeler fan, this confirms my beliefs on the Steelers offensive staff. Scheme, development, etc.. Thx for your work
Love your breakdowns. It’s easy for us fans to see when Kenny makes a bad throw but harder to know if the schemes/routes/QB are at fault for the busted plays where he dumps the balls because “no one is open”.
Hey JT, was just put onto this by Twitter. Definitely a lot of HS concepts in Steelers offense w/ Canada as OC and even from a protection standpoint it seems that way. Not just route concepts, but play design like mirroring or motion into a mirror of sorts or sprint out and flood, about 50% decoy routes, and 1 key read progression 2 throws w a check or sometimes not and some predetermined. The Double Post w Shallow Cross is prime example where it gets cute, you don't see that Shallow Cross a lot in pro from opposite side double post typically there is an intermediate route normally to hook/curl into conflict so the cross which is a checkdown gets lost in the wash. Kenny looked at both post routes which tells me he's making the progression, but there is too much going on to get eyes down to hit the check as the check is going to get lost in the wash with no pressure on hook/curl defenders inside as most shallow cross concepts have intermediate routes to pressue the hook/curl. Lots of hitches, outs, and stick as well with corner routes. There is little premium on consistent route running, even less emphasis on RB in protection because they are almost always given outside protection w swing or shoot option as a secondary check in scramble situation which occasionally works out . I generally like Kenny's read progression and where he chooses to go with the ball, misses some, but there is no if-then type structure in the play calling from what are they consistently showing me as a defense or based on down and distance. Hard to run a consistent offense against NFL defenses when play calling and play design are so poor. Not many NFL receivers/backs can consistently win matchups week in and week out against NFL defenders and defenses to make an offense like this work like it may in HS or even College. A dream matchup for most NFL DC's. Even the run play design is awful which is another topic altogether. I am almost 100% the swing pass you highlighted is the hot route and the hitch on the other side is not a hot route, because if it was hot it should be a slant and is a decoy, you see this at HS and college a lot w no backside options outside of scramble situations, but you are right about the post on that call.
I just really want Kenny to work on his pocket awareness. And to be calm sometimes I know it ain’t easy in the pros but everyone else does it where they stay strong in the pocket n deliver especially when they have a clean pocket
I wonder how much the start of the game unsettled Kenny for much of the rest. Perhaps until there was discovery of: here’s how the Rams have been playing this this and this. Now let’s attack what we know. And so we have the fourth quarter The lack of hot routes has been an issue. I’d like to hear an answer to that in press conferences. I can’t tell if that’s Canada or receivers lacking awareness. I think it’s the latter, especially with Connor, but it’s speculation on my part. But that’s been all season. You don’t become an OC without knowing the importance of hot routes.
Excellent video and break down, I love hearing you call out some of the old school concepts that still work and some of the Old School concepts that don’t work anymore. That’s why we don’t use them.👊🏽👍🏽
Gtreat content JT. Question for you JT. I noticed both Love and Picket have these moments with what looks like random movement in the pocket that you pointed out. Is it possible that they are being coached to pay attention to lanes opening up for them to run while also taking a second look to see if a receiver is braking open as they are starting to run throungh the lane? A lot of these younger QBs are very good at throwing on the run and I'm curious if their getting coached this way especially when the oline/protection has been questionable at best. Thanks!
@@EZR725 so if a defense is giving you an easy 5-10 yards via scramble because their getting cute with their pressures.. Your going to turn that down because the QB hasn't moved on to his second read yet or let the play develop?
Kenny has his problems and things he needs to improve on for sure but if the steelers organization really wants to help him and see if he is their future QB or not, they need to get him a better OC in the off season and put together a better o-line in front of him. Hopefully they do both of those things during the 2024 off season to help Kenny
Bro, I hope the Kenny, Matt Canada, and the rest of the offense is going through and breaking this film down. They have the talent, they just need to execute! Great video!
Pickett's bad throws and questionable execution at times aside; this scheme is just painful to watch. When you hear things like "dinosaur of a play", "no hot routes", "turnover worthy play", "this offense makes things shockingly difficult", it's amazing that the Steelers even post wins. Then seeing a scheme where four players block two DL and leave 2 players to block four is absolutely dumbfounding. The offense is so basic and non-challenging to NFL level defenses that opposing DC's have to look at the film and almost laugh. They rarely scheme wins in matchups and really don't put anything on the field to stress defensive weaknesses or help a struggling QB out. It's truly amazing that they score at all.
From my perspective, I think the unnecessary movements in the pocket could be a result of him attempting to forcibly step back into the pocket, based on recent criticisms of him escaping early and/or for no reason. It doesn't seem natural yet but I did notice him attempting to step back in more frequently, and less frequently escape. To me, this is a positive step forward despite it looking ugly at times. I am hoping that it becomes more natural as he gains confidence with staying in the pocket, making better decisions, and slinging the ball. Thoughts on this take?

It's frustrating to watch KP frequently bail early or scramble into pressure. Those negative tendencies are so inherently carved into the player, it's really hard to coach out of them, if at all.
Yeah I keep hearing people say "hes willing to get hit" but it sure doesn't feel like it. He seems to bail out of the pocket at the slightest of pressure.

Kenny seems really nervous in the first 3 quarters of every game lol, but in the 4th he remembers that he's the guy and stops dancing in the pocket so much
Excellent analysis. I particularly found it enjoyable, as I kept saying the same damn thing to my screen that you were saying, over and over. One example here might be patterns off certain formation. Why on earth wouldn't have either WR that is on the LOS run a corner (in this instance), vs. the underneath guy is beyond me. It just doesn't make much sense. I also cracked up at some of your terminology. For instance, what you refer to as "spray" (in this regard, it was in reference to a typical speed out), but in college, we called it "Stem." Old school, I/we'd stem a little to the center of the field to pull the CB in, then speed out to where we were supposed to be. Ultimately, I see the issues the Steelers have on offense the same as I did prior to watching. IT'S A COMBINATION of factors that contributes to the overall suckage. Sometimes the scheme is questionable (to say the least), other times Kenny IS the issue. Further, the o-line has gone from suck to blow. See the capitalized words above. I realize that Matt Canada is public enemy #1 for many Steeler fans, but their dislike is often misguided, without good evidence, and sometimes biased.
It seems to me he is more decisive with his throws as the game winds down. Fewer skip steps/shuffles...just plant and throw. If only he could get more comfortable in the pocket and be more decisive early on with his throws.
On that second play, I just cannot understand how the #2 WR doesn't notice his coverage guy running right by him on a blitz. He's immediately wide open - what's he doing continuing his route? He's running toward the coverage (safety). What's the point of that? Not only is your QB hot, but you're immediately open - turn around and receive the ball.
Are you trying to coach him? You found mostly the mistakes little or big. He is moving because he gets hit most the time. He would need a good o line for 4 weeks straight to calm down back there.
I think Heyward has good hands but his route running is just not great. I understand he’s like the third TE on the depth chart, but why are we having him run these over a guy like Darnell Washington ? If you’re gonna use Heyward like a WR, why not use an actual WR like Calvin Austin? Super frustrating, the obsession with 83
