- Ashgabat Turkmenistan is one of the strangest cities I have ever made a travel vlog about.
Recently brought to the attention of the world through John Oliver's popular program Last Week Tonight, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan's Dictator/President is quite a character.
However the craziness it didn't all start with him. Turkmenistan's first president, Turkmenbashi, set quite a powerful precedent.
He instated many strange rules for the country, and for the city of Ashgabat. No opera, it's too noisy, no makeup on television, the natural beauty of the Turkmen people is enough, and no dogs. Dogs were not allowed in the Capital city of Ashgabat due to their "foul odor".... what?
We only had a short day in Ashgabat before continuing our trip to Merv, and eventually to roast marshmallows over the door to hell. We were able to do some sightseeing to the Arc of Neutrality, which is topped with a golden rotating statue of Turkmenbashi, also the wedding palace of happiness, and the world's largest indoor Ferris Wheel, which is the next vlog 👌🏻
We visited in early 2019, but it's worth putting on your radar for 2020. The new president Gurbanguly has opened up the country much more than it used to be. Getting the VISA wasn't a walk in the park, but our friends at Lupine Travel set everything up for us.. Check out their trips to some of the lesser travelled countries!

Incredible, man. A very strange city, for sure, but also fascinating. So much opulence and interesting architecture. Your confusion and curiosity, mixed with wonder, makes this video even more engaging. Loved the voice-over as well. You really paint a picture of what the city is like with your words. It's mind-blowing that your VPN didn't even work there. The plov looks delicious, and the fermented camel milk certainly sounds unique! And the Wedding Palace of Happiness is beautiful! Very cool video! 😃 The fact about dogs is absolutely wrong though.. I just came back from a trip in Turkmenistan. One night I went to a cafe with some local friends I had met and on the way home we say a woman walking her dog. I was like..wait you can have dogs in Turkmenistan? My Turkmen friends laughed at me so hard and were like bro wtf are you talking about of course dogs are allowed you see one there..😂😂

It's an honour that you visited Turkmenistan (my Motherland). There is some wrong information in your video. First of all, dogs are not banned. It was a long ago. Not now. Even you can find people who own a dog in thier houses. Secondly, during the day of course there are few people around but in the evenings you can find a lot of people but I guess you didn't visit the right places. Many of places which you visited are mostly touristic places so there are no citizens at all. But if you had visited the places like Berkarar Hypermarket or Ashgabat Ylham (Inspiration) Park or many other such kinda places, you could have found a lot of people.
They aren’t! Dogs are allowed... They weren’t a long time ago, but the current president, Berdimuhamedow, loves them (he even wrote a book about them).
Also, when I was there, Google was accessible without a VPN...

I'm more tempted to visit Ashgabat than these cities full of crazy skyscrapers in the desert.

The language is türkmen tho. It's not Russian. It's a dialect of Turkish language

I guess it is a very wrong approach to say a thing like that as you do not know so much about Turkmenistan except some information from videos or such kinda sources. Actually in Turkmenistan women are treated very well. They are loved very much and respected. I still wonder how people like Turkmenbasy rose to power, and more importantly, STAY in power. I have a feeling a lot of it has got to do with dictators being far far easier to manipulate by other countries. Especially the mentally challenged ones. The people are people though, as always.

this man (Turkmenbashi) made gas, salt, water, electricity free for use. no charges at all. only for last 1-2 years its payed a penny per year...like I pay 10usd per year for electricity+water+gas... 1 litre of fuel was cheaper than1 litre of water... and he done many many priorities to people of Turkmenistan that it works till today... he was stupid but, we loved him. probably he was relatively kind to people...
