So when Reese, someone who's not Finch, looks at the machine and says, "You're gonna help me get him back," the machine was given a life of its own that we began to discover in the later seasons of the show.
You what out of all the relations The Machine as with people, her relationchip with Jonh was my favourite, Root saw The Machine as a God to be loved and idolatred, Finch sometimes saw her as a proud father and most of the times as an entity to be feared, Jonh actually treated her like he treated erverybody else, he respected her, he apreciated and complimented her when she did good and he called her out on her bullshit when she diserved it! Even if maybe he himself did not realized it he was the only one who actually treated The Machine as a person!

Season 1 finale is nothing short of a movie. Such a thrilling episode and season 2 was just amazing. Great show.To add to it the background music is just brilliant.
The last "exchage" between Reese and the Machine is still one of my all time favorite TV scenes, and this is 2022. This is YOUR fault, so YOU are going to help fix it.

That was done on purpose. That's also the same spot Shaw is in when the Machine calls her in the show's last scene during that really great voiceover by the Machine.
Another fun fact: the first episode Root appeared in, Root Cause, Amy Acker did NOT play her. She was played by Rachel Miner. I know her from Supernatural. Great actress. She would've done a hell of a job as Root too. Probably would've killed Root off sooner since they had to kill off Rachel's SPN character due to her MS.
Really? Have you seen the other PoI Season Finales? This episode was really just setting the stage for what was to come, as did the others I will admit, but the writers definitely upped the ante as the series went on. For Season 2 we had God mode, preceded by Zero Day. For Season 3 we had Deus ex Machina, A House Divided, and Beta. Season 4, Asylum and YHWH. And of course, Season 5 was the series' finale, Return 0. Each of these episodes were among the very best the series had to offer.
I'm guessing it's the victim/perp mindset that they have with the POI's. Besides, it does tend to be once/twice every season and not every other episode. Besides that the 'Mastermind-all-along' people (Root, Elias, etc.) are or were highly intelligent people with the skill and connection to fool the machine, so I don't blame Team Machine for falling for it. But I do agree a healthy amount of skepticism should've intruded into their minds at some point...
This scene was very sad, for one the women that was killed, her number never came up. If Root was ever in Johns cross hairs, he would have tap her. But John felt so alone, what do I do know. John ask Harold at the begining, we need a back up. What if you aren't around. The back up!!!!! there is no back up, you do what has to be done. Machine was told, not just me, but everybody. The machine took that as Harold don't count. Spoiler alert, even Shaw thought Reese was going off the deep end, when Harold was kidnapped by Root again. John kept on talking to the cameras.
Alicia's number didn't came up for 2 very interesting reasons. First, her act of violence wasn't predicted because she did everything she could to stay off the radar. She knew of the machine, and tried to hide from it. Secondly, Her death wasn't predicted because it wasn't premediated.

Alicia Corwin was on the run from the organization that Finch had just rescued an analyst... gave him a new ID... and told him him he had to disappear with 2 pieces of information. 1) The machine... exists. 2) You met it's creator. Now... you have to ghost... Corwin had gone from the confident government insider finalizing the situation with Nathan Ingram... ...to be hunted by the same spooks that killed Nathan Ingram and were picking off the half dozen individuals Corwin involved in bringing the Machine on-line. She was probably not carrying a cell phone or anything electronic... fearing it was being tracked. The footprint for the machine to even see her would have been minimal.
Great finale, but I found it rather annoying that the main characters on the show are so easy to manipulate. Finch I can accept, but Reese too? Hell, the very reason for Reese's current situation is because he got setup by his superiors. You'd think that by now he'd know the warning signs of when someone is playing him.
I am a little lost, If she was planning on capturing Finch surely the machine would've spit out Finch's number, even if he was 'dead with his original persona.'
No, it wouldn't have. The machine doesn't spit out victim numbers, only numbers of person of interest. In this case, it spit out Root's number both because she is in danger, and because she is a perp.
She's a hacker. Who was able to evade all of Finch's previous attempts to locate her. And in turn plant a worm on his own network (season 1 episode 13). I guess she was smart enough to not leave electronic evidence of her real plan.

Rachel Miner, the actress that played Root originally in 1x13. Amy didn't play Root until this episode.
