Shogun should go and train with whoever he trained with for the chuck fight. The one against chuck was one of the best i have seen, light on his feet, fast, mixed his takedown well with his strikes, good head movement.
FYI peeps this was one of Shogun's first workouts this summer after long week of MMA training. Also, this video show's only a small portion of his training in preparation for this fight, and includes some drills he was learning for first time to build some athleticism outside his normal routine. Many fighters, especially brazilians, have bad running form cuz they haven't played other sports other than fight. Give the guy some credit for making an effort to improve himself and try new things.
I believe intensity and body weight training has helped shogun win his fight, speed and cardio were gained tremendously well from this training. Some times mixing training up but still focusing on shogun's weaknesses is good, but some of the exercises were funky though :)
THIS is what Shogun needs to be doing. Since the Mark Coleman days "Shogun's weakness, is his weakness" where he'd get tossed around like a ragdoll by everyone with a wrestling background. Now that Shoguns putting on some muscle, he's going to be a force t be reckoned with. Scary.
Shogun looks in brilliant shape here i gotta say, and although im a big Forrest fan ( who isnt?) i think shogun will easily win on saturday, via stoppage or ko in the 2nd round. I also think that when he gets another shot at Jones (if he beats rampage) then the fight will be WAY different from the firswt time they met. Anyone else agree?
he's an mma fighter, not an olympian. his muay thai style is very flat footed and reflexive. doesnt matter if he looks slow. he's probably tired. this appears to be conditioning for resistance and cardio cuz we all know forrest is looking to take this to the ground. shogun knows how to fight, and after seeing those glasses in action my guess is we'll be seeing a 1st round tko ;]
@SoCalDude805 those glasses were made to simulate being rocked...your vision goes out and you have to respond at the same time. they look like a brilliant tool for mma fighters.
i am sure they didn't show everything the trainer had him do. i would hope he would have him do some hack squats though. with his knee problems those would help shogun out alot.
Shogun one of those guys who would really benefit if he moved to America, got with a real strength & conditioning coach (ala Frank Mir and UNLV's Mark Phillippi) & starting working everyday with D-1 wrestlers. I know Shogun has no desire to leave his native Brazil, buthis lack of dedication to strength and conditioning & wrestling have hurt him considerably in the UFC's grappler friendly MMA rules. Hell this shit looks like rehab, it doesn't even look like a Pro fighters workout.
he should have been training like this all along the functional movents would have prevented the injuries or atleast made them less severe.people like him and bj penn rely too much on toughness.guys like jones and mcdonald hav balanced training programs.
Shogun doesnt look slow at all. For his body type hes looking really good. hes probably 210-220 lbs and with those thick legs hes going to run slow... it doesnt make you less of an athlete... shit Michael Phelps trips over his own feet when he runs.
@kaisermetal Didnt know that running doesnt help boxers that well.. Looks like they can go many rounds no problem. And also Shogun did pretty well on Saturday so I'd say there are some benefits to this new training.
@kaisermetal Randy Couture has been using alot of the new age stuff and hes done pretty well especially for his age. Most of these MMA fighters do what Shogun is doing in some way or another.
He needs to train with JDS, Minotauro, Anderson and at Rafael Cordeiro's, no "secret training" crap with hell knows who. Spend more time in the US with those guys.
If he had been training like this since the loss to Jon Jones, there wouldn't be no one in the world to beat him. But I think it would be easier to see Roy Nelson with a six packs... At least looked like it was his first time doing this training.
Its about time Shogun gets on this side of training! His conditioning always look like shit, esp against Jones. Hopefully we see a strong and well conditioned Shogun.
@nick191088 or griffin is a step for shogun to get back to his n.1 spot... he'll try to prove that he's still the shogun from the machida bouts, and I dont think it's out of reach for him, after all that was few months ago
@huntman125 You're making size too big an issue. I've met Shogun before, he's not exactly a small guy (I've seen middleweights too). Frankie Edgar is the smallest lightweight. Cain Velasquez is a relatively small (and not very cut) heavyweight. So what? Shogun's technique and gameplan was NOT up to the level of Jon Jones. That's it. Don't blame size too much, Shogun's in great shape now.
@rickm1991 If that's the case then it could've been filmed months ago. But I doubt it. He's probably working with that guy multiple days a week. I'm glad Shogun's got most of his training in America now.
@McFlyYouSlacker Maybe, maybe not... only way to find out is when they fight again. It would DEFINITELY be a lot more competitive than the first fight though...
@sareij I'm going to guess this particular workout was near the end of the day. Maybe even not the first one of the day. I really can't see him being that slow.
rua is looking good i hope he beats forrest it will make the lhw picture look so much better. if he wins with a nasty ko and rampage wins i bet dana is going give quinton his revenge fight. who doesn't want to see rampage versus shogun oh man somebody would be getting knocked the fuck out.
not sure what is up with those glasses...'when the glasses are removed, shogun is able to react faster through heightened visual focus...' No shit...those things turn on and off and 'impair his vision.' who doesn't react faster when their vision ISN'T impaired?! So is he going to wear these things on the way to the cage, so his eyes are faster during the fight? Why not just train with wrenches? "....if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a Forrest!!'
@McFlyYouSlacker with ease! remember how Michida was smashing everyone and no one was able to even hit him? Shogun is a great fighter he was out for over a year and he had surgery on his knees before he fought Jones i think thats why he lost
@XREMOTEX as the above poster said its pretty much diet as the body fat % will be a factor in abdominal s being visible, however genetics is also another factor
Yes, two knee injuries really slowed down Shogun's career. He is fighting on pure heart, because he is not the same fighter he was in Pride.
Shogun should go and train with whoever he trained with for the chuck fight.
The one against chuck was one of the best i have seen, light on his feet, fast, mixed his takedown well with his strikes, good head movement.
It looks as if he has the athletism of the average working man... I guess this is one of those cases where he's a much better fighter than athlete
the glasses are a great concept. Pretty smart
i would say that shogun is not yet an athlete but he is one hell of a fighter. if shogun can get this athletic aspect of the game , he is unstoppable
Give the guy some credit for making an effort to improve himself and try new things.
he fought one of the best fights in mma history couple of days ago, a true warrior
I believe intensity and body weight training has helped shogun win his fight, speed and cardio were gained tremendously well from this training. Some times mixing training up but still focusing on shogun's weaknesses is good, but some of the exercises were funky though :)
hav respect for a legend of the sport
THIS is what Shogun needs to be doing. Since the Mark Coleman days "Shogun's weakness, is his weakness" where he'd get tossed around like a ragdoll by everyone with a wrestling background. Now that Shoguns putting on some muscle, he's going to be a force t be reckoned with. Scary.
Shogun is sick! Look out for Ross Pearsons fight in rio too he is a underrated lightweight from the U.K
Shogun had always been phenomenal after a bad performance, War Shogun!
Shogun looks like hes training harder then ever. Best of luck to him.
Sorry Shogun but Forrest is gonna whoop your ass this Saturday and no amount of crunches or games of dodgeball are gonna change that.
What type of glasses is he wearing & where can they be purchased.Intresting training concept.
those glasses are what i call TECHNOLOGIE in training O_O to practice ur reflexes at the last second O_O
Shogun has a non-fighter body. He's like the everyday normal guy fighting against monsters. This is why I cheer for the man. WAR SHOGUN!!
Let's go shogun!!!!!! You the man!!!!!!
cant wait for griffins training vid i just know his is way more intense.
Those glasses are an awesome idea.
he's an mma fighter, not an olympian. his muay thai style is very flat footed and reflexive. doesnt matter if he looks slow. he's probably tired. this appears to be conditioning for resistance and cardio cuz we all know forrest is looking to take this to the ground. shogun knows how to fight, and after seeing those glasses in action my guess is we'll be seeing a 1st round tko ;]
GRIFFIN BETTER BE READY, SHOGUN IS DANGEROUS WHEN HE COMES OFF A LOSS.
this is all great but i still cant see Shogun having even close to the strength or stamina that Forrest has. Forrest is a beast
Esse é fera
@huntman125 The thing is... Shogun is NOT small for 205. Bones is HUGE for 205. But physically Shogun does look like he could make the cut.
I hope Shogun Rua wins the title again
hes not the most athletic fighter but he is deffinetly one of the most skilled...
Shogun Rua... Dodgeball champion 2011
that training is crazy
@mouloudo i agree, either way the winner will be in the top 5 and ready for a no.1 contender fight at least.
Shogun WILL win. Mark my words.
Shogun one of those guys who would really benefit if he moved to America, got with a real strength & conditioning coach (ala Frank Mir and UNLV's Mark Phillippi) & starting working everyday with D-1 wrestlers.
I know Shogun has no desire to leave his native Brazil, buthis lack of dedication to strength and conditioning & wrestling have hurt him considerably in the UFC's grappler friendly MMA rules.

woah thats some pretty futuristic training! with them goggles and all!
That "Yeeeah" at 1:29 is so boss.
WAR SHOGUN!!
Come on Dana! Stop holding back on us! "Fight week blog week!"
Shogon is badass.
@kaisermetal Didnt know that running doesnt help boxers that well.. Looks like they can go many rounds no problem. And also Shogun did pretty well on Saturday so I'd say there are some benefits to this new training.
I'd like to see this fight and Forrest's career in the UFC end via head kick. But I doubt that's what will happen.
I think shogun would do we'll if he went down to 185
anytime you see a dude drinking arrowhead, you know it's cali. Bring shogun back to rio baby
I think he should spend more time working on his rear naked choke defence...
Anderson Silva does that foot ball exercise instead he uses a tennis ball, you can see it in his episode of UFC All Access. War Shogun
It looks like that's the first time he's met that conditioning coach.. I really hope that's not the case
@kaisermetal Randy Couture has been using alot of the new age stuff and hes done pretty well especially for his age. Most of these MMA fighters do what Shogun is doing in some way or another.
when he was throwing the ball on the wall i was like HADOUKEN!
Dodgeball: A true Shogun story.
@WhiteFangOfTheLeaf Todd Norman also provides speed training, but I don't know how extensively Shogun used it. I know Mark Munoz has used it though.
He didn't look tired at all.
Forrest Griffin wasn't worth all this.
Its about time Shogun gets on this side of training! His conditioning always look like shit, esp against Jones. Hopefully we see a strong and well conditioned Shogun.
@Sonic3nKnuckles Lets not forget how amazing Forrest looked in the Anderson Silva fight.
I so want a pair of those shades Shogun is wearing lol. Would look like a boss in any nightclub.
@nick191088 or griffin is a step for shogun to get back to his n.1 spot... he'll try to prove that he's still the shogun from the machida bouts, and I dont think it's out of reach for him, after all that was few months ago

That 'sprinting' @ 0:58 looked like baby steps. . .
@7orqu3
he didnt gas he was overwhelmed by jones style
Go shogun!!!!!!!!!
i from brazilian - brazil
Strength and conditioning last time i checked those have nothing to do with speed
ESPERAMOS QUE NÃO LEVE OUTRA PIABA, SE PREPARE E CUIDE-SE BEM SHOGUM.
@rickm1991 If that's the case then it could've been filmed months ago. But I doubt it. He's probably working with that guy multiple days a week. I'm glad Shogun's got most of his training in America now.
@McFlyYouSlacker
Maybe, maybe not... only way to find out is when they fight again.
It would DEFINITELY be a lot more competitive than the first fight though...
Shogun Is back !_!! Griffin is a dead man walking!!!
he must be the master of dodgeball
@sareij I'm going to guess this particular workout was near the end of the day. Maybe even not the first one of the day. I really can't see him being that slow.
rua is looking good i hope he beats forrest it will make the lhw picture look so much better. if he wins with a nasty ko and rampage wins i bet dana is going give quinton his revenge fight. who doesn't want to see rampage versus shogun oh man somebody would be getting knocked the fuck out.
is it just me or does shogun look really inflexible?
LETS GO SHOGUN!
SHOGUN É MONSTRO!!!!!!!!
Should get a nutritionist and get down to 185. He looks like a kid when he fights a big 205'er like Jones & Griffin.
Was Shogun.
Shogun can only win if he evolved his takedown defense.
As long as opponents can take him down, he will lose.
@Anathematicmusic True and Im a big Shogun fan ! Forrest is a legend !
brazucas seem to have such high pitched voices, maybe i just been smokin too much of that shit
anderson sliva dose the ball throwing dodge traning as well
I wonder whether or not shogun could fight as a middlewheight, he really doesnt look very big for a LHW...
not sure what is up with those glasses...'when the glasses are removed, shogun is able to react faster through heightened visual focus...' No shit...those things turn on and off and 'impair his vision.' who doesn't react faster when their vision ISN'T impaired?! Why does he keep wearing his old Bad Boy t shirt? He's got a new one from Bad Boy for 128.
I liked the part where Shogun said "shhh".
Does he have a dodge ball game coming up?
Shogun needs to come back to Rafael Cordeiro. Then He will make the GREATEST RETURN !!!!!
hopefully he gets better chest...........Shogun FTW
I didn't know dodgeball was a strength and conditioning program.
@BornIntoTheGrave Best response ever.
@McFlyYouSlacker with ease! remember how Michida was smashing everyone and no one was able to even hit him? Shogun is a great fighter he was out for over a year and he had surgery on his knees before he fought Jones i think thats why he lost
@XREMOTEX as the above poster said its pretty much diet as the body fat % will be a factor in abdominal s being visible, however genetics is also another factor
mauriciiiiiiooooooo shoguuuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnn RUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
@Trigunflame hes a heavyweight bro, watch valesquez sprint, hes not more agile. muscle takes away a lot of movement.
I like Shogun but I can't bet against Forrest, ever.
Watching this got me fucking hype. Ima go run couple miles.
Why does he keep telling the camara-man, shh...shh...shh. ??
Can a "In Form" Shogun beat Jon "Bones" Jones?
since when does giving someone a seizure increase reaction speed
Too bad shogun gasses in 2 mins
