I've had a Zippo for a long time, and just recently pulled my IMCO Super 6700 out of storage to compare, and fuel in the IMCO lasts so much longer than the Zippo. I had my Zippo for nostaligic reasons, I think, but for practicality the IMCO is so much better than Zippo.
@@petalcovus7405 They're not. I've tried. The reason is, the bottom of the Zippo is only half the problem. The other half is the top - fuel evaporates from the wick just as fast as it evaporates from the base of the lighter, and unlike IMCO, Zippo has no close-fitting cap over the wick.
Zippos are the most practical lighter you just think cool = unreliable which is not true zippos are the most convenient and easy and not only that they can be fuel efficient
I do not smoke but to me carrying a Zippo is like carrying a piece of jewelry. And funny thing is the first day I got my first Zippo I went out with 3 friends of mine and we stepped into a saloon ordering some food as I realized there were candles on the desks. None of us had a lighter to light the candle on our desk but me. I proudly lit the candle with my brand new Zippo! :-) I love my Zippo ( 2.003.232 ), it is a limited edition, one with the number 226/500 and picturing a mosque - it reminds me on my trip to Istanbul as a teenager on my 250 ccm Honda back then in 1986. It was the time of my life, I was young and felt unstoppable - and indeed nothing stopped me on my trip from Germany to Turkey, I did the long trip on my bike like it was nothing... memories are the best thing in life! :-))

Brass has less density to steel so it holds the heat for a shorter time impacting the major design flaw of the zippo the fuel evaporating you should weigh the fuel and see which burns more fuel on the same schedule?
wow I never knew these existed. There have been frequent power outages in my area due to bad infrastructure, a pretty bad time when it's cold in winter, and I've kinda gone down the rabbit hole on being prepared. Already got a way better phone plan with hotspot so I could go online on my pc if the power is on but internet is out, got two rather large power banks to hold me over until I eventually get one of those huge power stations, have a few blankets/jackets, a few candles but would like more. I'd like to stock up on perhaps a 7 pack of scripto lighters (a whopping ~$2.75 at walmart lol), maybe a ~10 pack of bics (only about $10-11 at walmart), and would like some type of refillable fluid lighter for backup/cool factor/nostalgia. I can get a new Zippo for about ~$11. I wished I had of known about the knockoff Star zippo clone lighters back in the day when I heard they were only ~$2.50 or so on amazon. Even with today's inflation they're only $7.99 when I looked earlier though. Meh, for ~3 bucks more I'll just get a zippo at this point. I'm very interested in this IMCO lighter though, seems like the best of both worlds, cool zippo-like qualities but without the bad fuel evap issue. A well insulated sleeping bag and propane mr buddy heater and camping stove are about the only other major things I think I'm missing for winter, luckily I have awhile to go until then many months away. Doing a little at a time as budget allows. I've seen a small keychain "peanut" lighter that's like a "trench lighter", as well as the trench lighters themselves when look kinda cool
Reports suggest the Douglass L doesn't retain fuel any longer than an IMCO, so the design of those O-ring seals must be garbage. I've heard the Douglass S retains fuel longer, but I hear they have serious expansion issues due to the lighters being made of brass (or brass and steel) rather than all-steel: the expansion issues mess with the tight tolerances. Plus there's the price - I can buy 12-18 IMCOs (not knock-offs) on AliExpress for the price of one Douglass L or S lighter. I'm sticking with IMCO.
totally agree the IMCO 6700 is the go for me, I have just one and wish I had bought more of them when they were more reasonably priced. These days they are pricey. Much better IMHO than the Zippo. I have used both and found the IMCO the better lighter.

I agree . I remember them selling in the UK for around £4/5 a good few years ago. Then they started making slim ones, with wind guards etc and they shoot up to £20+. Then Imco sold the patent to a Japanese company and made in China. Retail now For about £30 ish. But they are been copied even within China. I still have one as well as a zippo , aesthetically pleasing, however my smoking days are over, besides the smell of lighter fluid is enough to get me wheezing. Ps when they were selling for a £5 here in the uk, I used to get a mate in Ireland to get me some, as they were only 35p there!
I discovered IMCO lighters during the Gulf War. Zippos were hard to find in the Middle East but IMCOs were everywhere. They were light, dependable, and unique. Lots more parts to the lighter so more to break under hard use. Held fuel far longer than Zippos which are always evaporating out. IMCO style is definitely more Art Deco. Zippos are rather plain. If you see any Stateside most likely they are used by Veterans who've been there.
IMCO lighters do have more parts, but they were originally made for military use, so they're strong. I've been collecting IMCO lighters for around 20 years, and I've never seen an IMCO Triplex that broke. I read an anecdote from a soldier in WW2 whose IMCO (the original 1937 Triplex model) got run over by a tank, and when he picked it up, it still worked. They're all stamped sheet steel construction, which is why some folks liken them to the Russian Kalashnikov rifle. Russian soldiers called them "Vdovushka" (the little widow) because they would collect them from dead German soldiers, and they were prized because they worked better than Russian lighters.
Zippos are very art deco.. Zippost sem to be an inferior american copy of an austrian lighter drom the 20s. The austrian design was more complex. A wich snuffer and a better seal in the base
Im american and lived around zippos forever, but after i got an imco it was clear which is actually better. Imcos go for sooo damn long, ive had one sitting around for probably 6 weeks and still holds fuel and its easy lighting candles since you can take it out....i love it
Yeah Imcos are great, also those peanut lighters I really like as well, they are small with an O-ring, I'd say the fuel lasts 6 months + in them, only issue is they are not wind proof, but great for putting in a coat pocket and leaving there.
In 1932, George Blaisdell founded Zippo on a knock-off of the IMCO 2000 design from 1929. Blaisdell copied the Austrian design, removed the tiny hinged wick cap of the Austrian lighter, and replaced it with a large hinged lid. This resulted in a very large space inside the lighter lid where fuel vapors could build up: these then escaped much faster due to the relatively large junction between the lighter's lid and the body. So Blaisdell made Zippos worse than the lighter they ripped off, and in the last 90 years, Zippo never even tried to fix the problem.
The zippo strikes images of smoky bars and Harley Davidson riding tough guys smoking Marlboro cigarettes... having had a zippo, a Harley and smoked Marlboro cigarettes before, I can say all three are mediocre at best... and never again. Zippo is way better, the only reason i say is its simplicity makes it more durable. Also there's many different types of fuel you can throw in a zippo and it will light. anywhere from alcohol, paint, thinner, gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid,BBQ charcoal lighter fluid. For durability versatility you can't beat a Zippo. BUT , id though agree that the IMCO is aesthetically and mechanically cooler with more options for today carry amd they are gorgeous lighters
Zippo is a legend but Imco’s are way better in terms of ergonomy and features, especially with spare flint compartment and flame adjustment on 6700. I’ve got both and i’d always take Imco with me when i go abroad.

Look at the Wiki. They were bought by a Japanese Company that still makes the original design but there are tons of clones out there as well. Real ones usually go for $30 and the clones around $15.
Attention! Some clones are even better than the original Imco. I’ve got one of these with BOBANG brand stamped on botton. Heavier because of thicker walls, less space left for the tank but it ferls much solid and endurable. The outer finishings are much better and visually clear too.
They are still being made but by another company that bought the name and patterns (japanese company, with lighters made in... China). Now on where to buy them, well, I guess Amazon is the easy answer. I just bought a vintage one (made in Austria) on a flea market a couple days ago. They definitely are cool.
I’ve really enjoyed learning about Imco lighters on YT, as a lifelong Zippo user I had no idea…. Ironically I have a solid brass just like yours I found on my friends property. However, I didn’t use it for years until recently I bought a butane pipe insert made by Zippo. As a pipe smoker, butane is certainly superior, cheers🎉. PS. Imcos seem cool, they should make a butane version!
I also have an IMCO but mine has some igniting problems, its really hard to get it started sometimes. Should I get a new flint, even though it's kind of new?
All the tools were bought by the Japanese company Windmill, and the lighters are now produced in China, using the same machines, which means the quality is about the same. So IMCO never really went out of business. The company was merely sold. I suspect more IMCO lighters are being produced today than ever before, and the new IMCOs are stainless steel, so they're less prone to rust, which was the biggest flaw in the old Austrian-made lighters.
Cheers, most daily videos are gas mask videos at 1700 UK time but I'm going to occasionally be putting up extra content at random times on random days when I get extra time to make extra content.
Fluid in my IMCO dries out on the second day after refilling, no matter how soaked it winds up. Being a non-smoker, it turned me down twice at important moments. Not to mention how hot the cap gets after a few seconds, and besides how hard to recap it is. Never used it again.
You must have gotten a fake Imco. I have an exceedingly positve experience with Imcos over 80 years old. Not being a smartass but it might have something to do with the wading not tightly packed together or the material of the wading itself. I use the original Imco wading equally as old as already mentioned..
IMCOs are well known to last longer than Zippos - often up to a month, whereas Zippos last a week or two tops. Also, IMCOs are made from steel, which has one of the lowest thermal conductivity of any metal, so the components stay cooler than Zippos, which are made of brass. So I don't know how you could possibly get the results you claim, unless you somehow got hold of a fake IMCO.
both are great designs but look up zippo gaskets. just a little rubber contraption that replaces the felt pad and seals the unit up. fuel lasts longer and it has a spot to hold a extra flint (besides under the felt on top of the rayon balls like the old school cats) they're cheap and really do make the zippo a million times more reliable. give them a shot
@@Weaponsandstuff93 so far so good. havent had them long enough to be really thorough with my claims but a 5 pack is less than 6 bucks on amazon. they seem great so far. gave a couple friends some as well and they seem to notice a difference. for what its worth even a minor performance gain is worth a buck something apiece

All Zippos, except the ones made during war, are made of brass. The war time Zippos are made of steel, due to brass was needed for shells. The silver ones are chrome plated brass. There are also some examples made of Sterling, but they are stamped as "Sterling" on the bottom and much more expensive than the standard Zippos. Originally that feature of the IMCO was for pipe smokers to light their pipes.

I've noticed the fuel lasts alot longer in modern zippos. I had one last me 3 or 4 weeks without having refuel. My 2016 one only lasts barely 2 weeks

Problem with IMCO is getting a one, IMCO went out of business and there are so many Chinese copies.

So IMCO never really went out of business. The company was merely sold. I suspect more IMCO lighters are being produced today than ever before, and the new IMCOs are stainless steel, so they're less prone to rust, which was the biggest flaw in the old Austrian-made lighters.
I do like your lighter videos they are just as good as your gas mask videos
Cheers, most daily videos are gas mask videos at 1700 UK time but I'm going to occasionally be putting up extra content at random times on random days when I get extra time to make extra content.

Fluid in my IMCO dries out on the second day after refilling, no matter how soaked it winds up. Being a non-smoker, it turned me down twice at important moments. Not to mention how hot the cap gets after a few seconds, and besides how hard to recap it is. Never used it again.
You must have gotten a fake Imco. I have an exceedingly positve experience with Imcos over 80 years old. Not being a smartass but it might have something to do with the wading not tightly packed together or the material of the wading itself. I use the original Imco wading equally as old as already mentioned..
IMCOs are well known to last longer than Zippos - often up to a month, whereas Zippos last a week or two tops. Also, IMCOs are made from steel, which has one of the lowest thermal conductivity of any metal, so the components stay cooler than Zippos, which are made of brass.
So I don't know how you could possibly get the results you claim, unless you somehow got hold of a fake IMCO.
both are great designs but look up zippo gaskets. just a little rubber contraption that replaces the felt pad and seals the unit up. fuel lasts longer and it has a spot to hold a extra flint (besides under the felt on top of the rayon balls like the old school cats) they're cheap and really do make the zippo a million times more reliable. give them a shot

@@Weaponsandstuff93 so far so good. havent had them long enough to be really thorough with my claims but a 5 pack is less than 6 bucks on amazon. they seem great so far. gave a couple friends some as well and they seem to notice a difference. for what its worth even a minor performance gain is worth a buck something apiece

All Zippos, except the ones made during war, are made of brass. The war time Zippos are made of steel, due to brass was needed for shells. The silver ones are chrome plated brass. There are also some examples made of Sterling, but they are stamped as "Sterling" on the bottom and much more expensive than the standard Zippos.
Originally that feature of the IMCO was for pipe smokers to light their pipes.
