- The amazing song that plays in the character endings of Fire Emblem Echoes Shadows of Valentia. I couldn't find any lyric videos for it and I'm sure other people besides me would have wanted it, so I devoted about 15 minutes of my precious time on earth to making this, when I could have wasted it on yet another attempt at the Thabes Labyrinth.

This is one of the best English versions in JRPG history imo.
The writer Brian Gray accomplished the immensely difficult task of simultaneously:
-Writing natural ballad-like English
-Making it singable to the rhythm of the Japanese instrumental without sounding stilted
-Staying true to the themes of the original in lyrical content
The singer Bonnie Gordon then brought it to life spectacularly. Major props to them both!
You're right. In a way the translators/writers have an even harder job than the original composers because of precisely those hurdles which might make it sound unnatural and is usually why dubs are worse than the original.

My first fire emblem game was Shadows of Valentia, and I was just SO surprised by the old English the characters spoke, that I still wonder if there are any other dubbed games with this kind of English. Are there?

This is why I consider the English version "The Heritors of Arcadia" the superior song, versus "Lost in Thoughts, All Alone" and "The Edge of Dawn".
I really feel sorry for Mila the entire time playing Echoes. She is loving and caring mother, wishing the best for her human children. At the same time, she always love Duma. She could not bring herself to let anyone use the Falchion until the very end, despite what he had done to her and their timeless dispute. Her love may prevent her from seeing that Valentian people have grown selfish, and her brother needs to be stopped, but that is the reason why I love her more. She is like an overprotective mother who finally goes down and lets her children decide their own fate while sacrificing her own life to pave the way for their future.

@Kayla Barco In Fate Awakening, there is a map called Mila Tree, when you have to fight on the trunk of a giant tree to meet Tiki on the top. This tree is mentioned at the end of Echo by Celica. Mila Tree actually includes two trees, interwining with each other and growing on top of Mila and Duma's graves. But people of Valm have forgotten about Duma.
well, she let the king have sex and neglect his children for years, which lead to tons of banditry since he didn't care.
What makes this song really beautiful is that it sounds like a mother desperetly trying to protect her children, but fails, although she knows her children will rise even without her and she'll be with them after death. A mothers love will always be the ultimate protection.

I just realized... "When my name is lost to the grave" isn't Mila... Both Duma and Mila have the ability to see the future... Valm clearly is trying to cast aside ties to Duma with Duma's Corpse being the badlands (it was localized as Demon's Ingle instead of Duma's Corpse.)
That's Duma speaking, knowing that, eventually, history will forget him while Mila's memorialized with a tree...

I think it depends on which one you hear first cause this is amazing, but edge of dawn is too and I love it.
And Lost in Thoughts has been so overplayed that I can no longer really enjoy the song- especially since Heritors and Edge are just so much more dynamic and engaging.
@@PhoenixBlazer39 Not to mention personal and meaningful. Lost in thoughts sounds like it's trying to sell you on Fates' main gimmick when both of these songs tie directly to the characters and story regardless of your perspective.
This is easily one of the best credit themes in any game. You get this warm familial feel from the both the lyrics and inflection of the singer. It's beautiful and touching.
When the genealogy remake inevitably comes out, I'm willing to bet that it's gonna have its own theme like Heritors of Arcadia and it's gonna be either Deirdre or Julia singing it. Or maybe they'll both sing it in their respective parts.

It’s gonna be Lewyn. Only character with a major role in both parts, and literally starts out in the Bard class. Probably going to be some sort of duet between Lewyn himself and Forseti, that would be pretty hype. Maybe if they make Lewyn/Erinys fully canon Ced will have a part in it too. That would kinda suck though because Forseti Arthur is amazing.

Hearing this song at the end of the game while reading what happened to Sonya after the game tore my heart. Her sisters souls were sacrificed to Duma and then became witches, both whom you fight against while fighting Duma. Then her fate ends up just like her sisters, ending up a witch that inhabits Nuibaba’s Lair. She wanted to get revenge for her sisters which is seen if you fight her against Jeddah. She was the one you saved, she got another chance of life and fought to unite Valentia and for her own goals, only for her to end up life her sisters who she wanted save
I don’t know if this helps, but those are just rumors, not to mention Sonya has rewarp in her spell list, so the villagers possibly comfused her for an actual witch or she discovered a new kind of witchdom, one doesn’t take ones soul away.
Noooo I don’t think she could become the same type of witch that her sisters became, instead I think she became the first person to become a witch without the consequences of sacrificing your soul and free will.

My interpretation is that she took in witches to help, we know they aren't just evil, and helped them out in the 1 place she knew, but didn't actually become a witch herself.
Fire Emblem Heroes confirmed that she didn't become a witch in the sense of giving her soul up to Duma. Her sisters are still damned though :(

Little late, but there's an oddly heartwarming moment hidden in this song. Mila sings about how she'll watch over her children and keep them strong "Even when my name has been lost to the grave"...but Awakening's Mila tree proves that even hundreds of years later, her children never forgot about her. I think that would make her happy to know.
Awakening, Fates, Echoes and 3 Houses all have glorious beautiful music. Say what you want about the games and how they vary from each other but the music is always some of the best out there. I can't wait for another remake just like Echoes. Mabey Thracia or Binding Blade would be great to see done next

I bought SoV as an impulse buy right before the second lockdown started in my country, I needed to spend 30 bucks on an order for FE Awakening or I'd have to pay 10 for shipping, SoV was 15 bucks so I went "hey, why not?" and let me tell you it's the best impulse buy I've had yet. I hadn't even heard there was a remake when it came out (zero promotions here) but I'm so glad that stupid site made me spend 15 bucks extra or I wouldn't have found it.
My favorite Fire Emblem. Best story in my opinion.

I still find it hard to believe just how well they put this into many of the themes in the game. It blends in so well that I often thought that the original versions had it in them.

This is such a comforting song, it evokes happiness for the promised future but also sadness for the sacrifice it took to acquire that end. Mila knows she and her brother’s time is done, like the elves of Middle Earth they know that they will pass into legend, dust on the wind, that this isn’t her song anymore, it’s ours. SOV is such a good game ❤️ (curse that map design tho!)

Fire Emblem has had some incredible credits songs, but this song hits hardest of them all.
Mila singing to her children that she will always protect them, even after she dies and that she'll always be a part of the world.
She can finally rest, and while it's bittersweet, it's full of hope. Their "lives can begin" is a perfect way of putting it.

Highly recommend watching a story playthrough at least if you can’t play it yourself. It’s Fire Emblems greatest story imo right next to FE6-7, FE8 and Telius

4 years ago on my Birthday I picked this game up for the first time. 4 years ago I discovered just how beautiful Fire Emblem stories could be. And at the end of the journey... Being treated to this song actually made me cry.
4 years later, here I am once again. Tearing up over how beautiful this song and game is. And how much this game meant to me as the second fire emblem game I ever played.
This game is beautiful, and I couldn't reccomend it more as a game to play... After being introduced to the series with games like Engage or Awakening, or even FE7.

Some of the lyrics apply to Duma too, like the “my name lost to the grave” line isn’t about Mila; both Mila and Duma have some ability to see into the future, so Duma would know that his resting place would be known as the Demon’s Ingle as opposed to Mila, who’s name lived on with the Mila Tree

There's just one thing I can't figure out with the lyrics... What, or who, is the jasper lion, exactly? Jasper is usually yellow in color, and the lyrics imply they are referring to Alm at that point, but Alm's colors are blue and green...

probably the best fire emblem story I want through, year Agos granted. I still remember how I got lost in the final dungeon and was a bit scared in that darkness just fighting abominations for hours upon hours. Also, the twisted truth behind the falchion and how it is use its something special.

I sang this song in a lower register (my voice is closer to baritone/bass), and it got me thinking about how the lyrics may change from Dumas perspective.
The second chorus particularly may go something like
"And though I am gone, just ash in the wind
One life now ended so yours could begin
Courage my children, this is your song
I am the War I have made you strong" (Duma being known as The War Father, whereas Mila was The Earth Mother)
I can't quite come up with anything for the "I will sustain you, year after year" bit, since I don't think that really fits Duma, but otherwise the song can be somewhat applied to Duma as well

That last pair of choruses are beautiful. They touch the heart in a special way, and can very easily bring tears to my eyes if I'm not distracted by something else while listening. Wonderful lyrics, wonderful voice.
