What study and school do you go to..to learn about this stuff? Audio engineering??

Gain reduction starts instantaneous in every compressor circuit, there's no delay time in the reaction of a compressor - attack is the speed at witch the compressor achieves (roughly) the gain reduction dictated by the ratio/threshold controls. The release control is the speed at witch the compressor restores most of the gain taken by the compressor. So you can consider this two controls as ratios not time constants. Of course, attack and release are not linear... but that's another story.

Very nice to hear someone who has experience with the hardware for these iconic compressors. I've only used UAD so no idea how it compares to the real units. I have a feeling not too well because my little RNC hardware unit is more effective than any of my compressors for taming vocals. I definitely have to work harder with plugins but don't have unison tech. am using an rme ufx which has a simple compressor built in.

John Barry to be fair, all the FMR products have sound quality way beyond their price range.
As to cheap compressors, try the Alesis 3630. It was key in Daft Punk's Discovery and it's about $50-$100 on eBay.

Love it, helped me out a lot about how different compressors colour sound. Really helpful!

Think the attack explanation is a bit off, it's not a delay of action control, it's rate of change.

everything is explained not practical and tahts why its hard to understand compression. Its hard because compresors works in
unintuitive way. what I mean by that is when you have a unconsistant volume in some track, the intuitive way to even up the levels would be to raise teh level of quieter parts, but thats not what compressor does. It levels down the loud parts to the level of quiet ones and then it boost up all the whole signal. This is my practical explenation of the controls: treshold should be set at the top of a main energy of a track, this is a thing that can be observed more than heard. this is an example of determining where the main energy of a track is: drive.google.com/open?id=1In5SLE51ENs9uFJn3yTBokfYchDOE5iR. Ratio is a procentage of compression. 2:1 is a 50% compressionm, 4:1 is a 25% compression and everything above 10:1 is considered a leveler that quiets everything above the treshold. Practical use of ratio. Everything with a higher ratio seems to be in your face, even and loud. so if you are trying to be new and fresh in mixing, use high ration on drums and vocals. everything with a lower ratio is good for things that are even already or on mix bus. Attack and release are the hardest to understand. Attack is a attack transient designer of a sound. Attack of a sound is a life of a sound, so if you set it to fast it might die. I barely use anything slower than 5ms. Drums always 30ms or higher, vocals slow attack, fast release, 4:1 and DEEP treshold - to destroy - smth like 10-12-14db of reduction. Try using it with a classic compressor like 1176 - you get that close in your face vocals. Release is a tail or decay transient designer. in practice it means that if your signal is complicated it has a lot of harmonics, a lot of elements hiting at the same time you would prefer to use longer release, faster release gives you more in your face sound. I use fast release on vocals, but it must be in tempo (check "bpm to ms calculator" online) basicly longer release make the sound easier, polished, even. i use fast release on a simple hip-hop drums and I produce beats in specified tempo beacuse I know I will later use a compresor like SSL with fixed settings. For example if I want to make a typical hip-hop bit i might set it up in project for 100bpm because 1/4th of that tempo is exactly 600ms, 1/8 is 300ms - two of 5 availible settings on the cmpressor - that way I know im always in time with my compression.

I am absolutely baffled at how a person who is supposed to be an audio engineer and instructor can produce a video with such shit audio. So it''s like "Do as I say not as I do?" Absolutely inexcusable.
