So, I grew up in a tiny village in New Zealand. There's 180 houses and about 450 people. Until recently the internet there was awful. We climbed trees and took ourselves to the river to swim without adults around. I feel old saying this, but kids these days will never know the thrill of unsupervised fun like we had. 😎
You are a national treasure. Natural talent. Also love that you keep trying new things. Keep it going. Yes please do the podcast about Irish roots in turn of phrase.
Garron your ability to think outside the box, explore ideas and self reflect is beautiful and quite rare. A natural philosopher and story teller. You're the Irish guy I would love to get stuck with in an airport lounge before a delayed flight... or just stumble across in a random pub on a Tuesday afternoon. Big love from Liverpool
You have a beautiful way of speaking your mind! I’m American but I’m 28 too and I think we really were the last generation to enjoy a “normal” internet free childhood and I am actually so grateful for that. I feel kinda bad for kids today. Also, one of the first TH-camrs I ever watched was Irish his name was BriBry he was my first “introduction” to Irish culture and watching you reminds me of that time in my life😂
I love how polite you are while still swearing. Brilliant. Also, great and profound takes here. I think you're really onto something with this. Interesting topic, very well presented. 👍
Liminal spaces! I love how you combine very accessible, funny, touching topics with a very fine intelligence and deep curiosity. Perfect public storyteller and philosopher, with a sharp wit. Kind of a Mark Twain for our times.
☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️. Completely right on! I often say “your man or your friend” and non irish people start to get very upset about that phrase lol “He’s NOT my friend “😂
He is too young! I remember it well and bought a DVD of it for my children 20 years ago… they fell about laughing! It definitely was of its day, I loved it.
I'm so pleased you mentioned how the internet is changing language! This struck me a while ago, we're actually losing language, when you watch TH-cam, the vast majority of people who do, for example, make up channels, all use the same terms , the same descriptions...seem to have no ability to speak in a way that reflects their personalities, their localities...it's a shame. I watch a few cooking channels, many in the US...they tend to be hosted by older people, or the ones I watch seem to be, & I really enjoy the different accents, the different expressions some elderly hunting guy in Tennessee uses compared to a lady in Vermont. It would be very sad if younger people grow up all learning to sound the same.
I really enjoyed your thoughts on this. It would be very interesting to hear how you feel the Irish language frames how people speak English in Ireland.
It definitely does. For instance, I always think Irish-English is more poetic because it inherited the structures of the Irish language, which is less direct than in English.
Garron your reminiscing made me reflect on my own Irish childhood and I felt quite sad. I’m 51 so a fair bit older than yourself. I was out from morning till night beating jeggies with a big stick because it was great fun. Me and my friends just playing rounders, kick a tin and Kribby. Now for goodness sakes there’s never a child out! Anyway that’s my rant over. Loved this podcast. Thanks a million.
Jack Frost has always stood out among my childhood movie memories. It's one of the few movies I can remember going to the cinema for, and they even sold Jack Frost-themed rock candy. The older I've gotten, the more I feel that his deceased father's best friend is the true hero of the movie as it were (looks after his dead friend's wife and child with zero expectations in return). As for watching shows these days, it's true I mostly watch things on streaming services, but never more than around 3 episodes before I say that's enough until next week. I think you can digest the show better that way and get more out of each episode, plus you can still get a smaller version of the thrill of having to wait to find out what happens next.
Totally agree. I mourn my childhood experiences often. It was great to be limited in ways - it forced us to pay more attention. I love this style of podcast from you Garron. Love the food stuff too, but this is real "food for thought"... Do this again with other topics!
Hi Garron. Just found you're youtube channel recently through your instagram and Tiktok. This podcast was really inciteful and brought back memories. I'm not old enough to remember The Morbegs but loved the story you shared from it. Your point about us having too much control of the media we consume and it affecting our character cut deep. Going to binge the rest of your podcasts now and I look forward to more in the future.
My mother said I was found under a big stone down around rathlee tower...my mother never lied...btw..I'm an old fecker, I'm 69 .I should be 70 but I was very sick for a year.
All episodes I’ve listened to so far have been really good. Can’t wait till things get going money wise so there’s more money to make more. They’re really well written x
This is similar to how I feel about growing up in regional Western Australia in the 90s/early 00s. We got a third tv channel in about 1998. Everyone had the same cultural points of reference, and people in other areas (even within Australia) don't really understand. Becoming obsessed with the movies your family happened to tape off the telly etc. I like the way you phrased your experience as "the irish childhood", and you're not alone in missing that time - that sense of cohesion and place that comes from everyone around you having the same cultural touch points. That said, I think it's good that children growing up these days never feel truly alone or isolated. They can always find a community online of people who share their experiences and interests.
I grew up in a somewhat poor household money wise in the gda and because of that ive lived what i feel is somewhat half an irish childhood half internet child hood, because of the one big old crt tv and movies and games from the last generation when all my friends in school have the xbox one i still had the 360 until everyone switched to ps4 pros, Im 17 now gonna be 18 in 9 months and i feel much older then people my own age but i still like the same modern things the still feel too young to be interestied in my main interests
My daughter is 26 I used to make her go outside to play and would get ‘I’m bored’ I would be out there too growing vegetables. She didn’t enjoy helping, eventually she discovered ‘making dens’ she did this on her own. When her friends discovered it, they started inviting themselves to our house to play outside! We had sky tv but I limited her viewing to an hour a day. She is an avid reader and loves her own company and is a lover of nature. I love TH-cam, but I do think it isn’t great for my brain as those shorts are addictive and they are not great for concentration! Gattath is a gemstone and I’m definitely going to be listening to more of his podcast!
I really enjoyed this, Garron. Love hearing your thoughts and insights, storytelling, reflection, curiosity. I’d chat with you anytime. ❤ PS - The algorithm now thinks I want to learn all about Ireland because I’ve watched so many of your videos. And actually, maybe it’s right. You’ve piqued my interest. 🙂
It is an interesting topic and spot on! I can say that I am thankful for the algorithm that sent you into my TikTok and eventually led me here. My daughter and I enjoy your dry delivery, observations, and use of language. Thank you for lots of laughs!
Loved Dustin the Turkey, I bought his version of 'Good looking woman' with Joe Dolan ( RIP Joe) pretty sure i still have the CD lol. I grew up watching Bosco and Zig & Zag with Ray Darcy. I am 8 years older than you. I had a Pokedex too, I was 11 when Pokemon started. I live in the south of Co.Down but we could get RTE 1 & 2 lol. The Morbegs, I had kinda forgotten about it even though I watched it quite a lot. I have a nephew who lives in Belfast and he has an English/American accent thanks to TH-cam....it's mad! Aw god I loved Jack Frost with Michael Keaton too, I bawled! Made me love the song Landslide by the Dixie Chicks because of that film.
I dreaded Glenroe. It's opening theme signaled the end of the weekend, almost bedtime now, school in the morning. Miley , Dinny and Biddy were the horsemen of the weekend apocalypse
Just found this. Really interesting! Looking forward to watch your other podcasts. Didn’t knew that Irish is kind of backwards. (I’m from Sweden and from our point of view, Finnish and German languages are kind of backwards to.) So it will be very interesting to watch that podcast.
We spent all our time outside great fun what ever the weather was. We hardly ever got sick Always out at the river in summer we would make a make shift tent when it was raining o the fun
I love the movie Jack Frost. I love Michael Keaton. It was a sad movie. Kelly Preston, John Travolta's wife played Jacks wife in Jack Frost. I love her too. May she rest in peace. F*cking cancer. Have you seen Mr. Mom or Multiplicity? Both funny. Of course Beetlejuice. He was my favorite Batman. Can you tell im a fan. Great podcast. You are a joy, Garron.❤❤❤
I have thought about the Morbegs regularly since childhood lol Really looking forward to the episode about Hiberno-English, the way Gaeilge has so heavily influenced the way we speak English is fascinating to me.
So iv been laughing at your shorts a few weeks now. U definitely shouldn't wear them short 👌 But anyway, this video compelled me to write a little message to say I got u all wrong. Your actually a proper Kant 😘😘😘

Garron for the new late late show host 🙌
I’ll take it 😂
@@Garron_MusicPlease go and tell the boys in RTE to take you and now that w**ker Keilty.
@garron2312 Kielty won't be around long. I remember him in the Empire, he was so funny. Pint and a Pizza for £5.
Fab idea . He would be amazing for the toy show

You should hear him sing…. fabulous voice.

"Kinda fucked up when you think about it, but good craic at the time" can be applied retrospectively to many times in history
Lived in Ireland from age 12-16 around the early 2000's. Fond memories of Gerry Ryan on 2fm and Dustin the Turkey.

I also love some movies that are not very good. Being limited make you appreciate things more.

Zig and Zag Brill my son loved them.

Awww you brought me right back with Molly agus Rossa 😂😂

Ohhhh, The Morbegs. There’s a few videos here on TH-cam 😀
Very interesting, thank you .
The mix of potent opioids & The Morbegs is a killer combination😱
Zig and Zag were legends but I always had a soft spot for Sockie.
This is the length of beard I like best. Short and sweet.
Do a month of only black and white movies. There are lots of classics that would be interesting to watch.
We were just talking about how when you watched a show, you had to wait till next week to see it. Now with streaming, some of the magic is gone.
Also, when you have the funds you should interview John Grant. There'll be some right good chatter about language
So iv been laughing at your shorts a few weeks now. U definitely shouldn't wear them short 👌 But anyway, this video compelled me to write a little message to say I got u all wrong. Your actually a proper Kant 😘😘😘
