I Love gnolls, not only are they an alternative from Orcs, Hobgoblins, Goblins, & Kobalds. They act differently and in strategic manner, due to the fact that they love using enslaving other people and races, rather than just killing outright. Definately a race you don't want to underestimate due to their savage appearance.
I like the idea of a group of players walking through a forest and they come across a town full of gnolls and they only know that they are safe when the gnolls ignore them or one just waves hello to them. I think that DnD not making the more intelligent encounters a bunch of planet of hats is interesting.
Gnolls are a seriously underrated race in d20 - with all their inherently bad rep; they have a ton of potential as Player Characters. I'm thinking; Player Character wise, a post apocalyptic style Gnoll, like something out of Mad Max or the Hive Cities of Warhammer 40k; like Necromunda. His setting is stoic, grim-dark and edgy, much like his attitude. The references to post apocalyptica reflect on the aesthetics his Weapons and Armor. He's a defector of his own kind; having rejected them, witnessing the horrors of Gnoll savagery firsthand, and learning the truth behind his own hellacious upbringing. Gone rogue, having deserted (narrowly escaped from) his own kind and Warband, and braned as a hertic and apostate unto his own people, he is now a renegade, a vigilante and mercenary; he hires himself out as a bounty hunter and a sell sword, living from whatever pay he earns. He tries to reject his dark and violent heritage, even though he's plagued by frequent nightmares, cryptic visions & violent flashbacks, as well as the demonic whiles and whispers of both Yeenoghu and Lamashtshu (of D&D & Pathfinder respectively) - much like the dark whispers of Gruumsh for Orcs. This means suffering the intens agony of resisting the macabre urges of Yeenoghu's violent teachings, as well as resisting the seductive lulls of Lamashtshu, while dealing with the gnawing hunger pangs and violent urges inherent to Gnolls. This leads to a grim, stoic and cynical attitude towards life in general, with nights plagued with haunting visions & memories as well as recurring nightmares; remedied only by coping mechanisms and made possible only potent sleep aids, anxiety meds, depressants - and days filled with dull aches, schizophrenia, cigarettes, heavy drinking, eating canned foods or rations, and the aggressive tendencies that come along with being a Gnoll. Learning the sobering truth about his own creation he is now repentant of his dark past, he hopes one day he can find redemption and maybe even salvation. He sees a better future for his kind, one that would one day renounce their evil nature in it's entirety, and turn unto an existence of honor and goodwill. He's affable enough towards people, if they don't get on his bad side. He's surprisingly well spoken for a Gnoll, but he's gruff, stoic, and a man of few words; more about actions and deeds over words. He doesn't talk much, but he has a broad vocabulary, picked up from overhearing dialogues in various settings. As far as inspiration goes; Listening to metal and rock, and game soundtracks like Turok, Quake, DOOM, and Nuclear Throne music and their like is the perfect set of music for inspiration for a Gnoll Player Character.
my character is a gnoll that rejected his pack and is trying very hard to live with humans because hes smarter then most gnolls and is trying very very hard to learn to read lol
My character is also a Gnoll! She was awakened from Yeenoghus control when she was a pup, and wandered off. She was found a couple days later by the kindest, sweetest elf woman you could ever meet. She took her in to raise her with her human husband and half elf children. She (my Gnoll) lost her mother many years later, since she was executed for harboring a Gnoll, so she left tk go seek revenge. My Gnoll suffers from serious depression, but remains fearcely loyal to her adventuring party, who she calls family. She can read, speak, and write in common and elven, and can speak Gnoll (which has no written language)
My character is also a gnoll. He was raised almost entirely by humans and learned how to be good and how to read. He's just a big intimidating teddy bear who will hug you so hard that he might break a few of your ribs.
Gnoll are obviously inspired by the Kishi/Utongen an African cryptic which are anthro hyenas that have the ability to turn into humans. There is also the Bhudai. A shaman who transforms into a hyena
What do you think would happen if a warband was traveling with a gnoll and ran into a pack of gnolls. My character is a good gnoll who was raised by humans and has never even met an other gnoll or heard of Yeenoghu. Would the other gnolls be intimidated, or would they try to approach, or what?
I remember that the 1e and 2e art depicted gnolls as plantigrade rather than digitigrade, as they appear in the 3e/4e art. Which do you think is more likely or accurate?
First of all, thank you for expanding my vocabulary. I've never heard of these categorizations before. I happen to find that digitigrade to be cooler looking personally. It makes them more feral and hyena like. I'd say that in most artwork thats how they are depicted too. That said, I don't think many if any digitigrade stand on two legs and have a humanoid posture like Gnolls do. So honestly the sky is the limit and I wouldn't worry to much about it to much.+Thagomizer
Ok, I´m no native english speaker. But I assume I can handle the language pretty good. Although, it´s very hard to follow your explanations...too fast, to quiet, too much mumbling...!
Sorry friend. This was my first video and it's quality isn't good. I have quite a few others and I bought a new microphone since this one. Listen to them and hopefully you'll see and hear an improvement. Thanks for the feed back+MaHari
Bard, you forgot an aspect of Gnoll society. Gnolls are very often matriarchal, much like their animal counterparts, where the strongest female of a clan of spotted hyenas is the leader.
You didn't played Heroes of Might and Magic III? :O (Gnolls are the most basic - 1st level - unit of the Fortress faction - a swampy castle of witches and beast masters)
Came here confirm how to pronounce 'Gnoll', came away with so much more! Thanks!

Dude how have i not found this channel just started watching and instantly addicted
Writing a Book, large section deals with Gnolls, Politics, fighting and inter species working so that really helped me!!
How did it go?

Gnoll commandos truly a weapon to surpass metal gear.
Nice lore coverage. I like the explanation of the non-Yenogu followers especially.

I’m assuming you aren’t doing this series or TH-cam anymore which sucks but this is exactly what I was looking for.
Gnolls are furry orcs
yep . i think that about sums it up...
What? That would be sad if all you could fight was orcs and furry orcs.
I would have loved the video if I could hear ALL of your words..
One of my summens is a half red dragon gnoll. She is a little bit aggressive but she is loyal to her Kobolt master.
where did you find the picture of the gnoll with the white warpaint at 2:24
I realize I'm about five years late, but if you still want the high resolution art, let me! I own the commission. 🙂
you did good, but the music is a bit loud.
Indeed, had trouble hearing your voice in some parts.
Agreed
what about Flinds?
where did they get that high tech gear and weaponry? 3:02
Nano machines, son!
I couldn't resist.
Would Gnolls be matriarchal like hyenas?
That would be Pathfinder; a largest female takes on the matriarch role.
3:08 ok... where did the High Tech Gnolls come from? That is so metal and 40k.
Thank you I'm working on a bestiary and I was running out of ideas for Monsters
Love it! More!

I'd build a "Fangs of Yeenoghu" Gnoll as a witchdoctor character by using the "Way of Mercy" monk subclass.

Your voice is..... Jesus! I couldn't finish listening to this story. 🤧
Please do a video on the Shedim
Gnolls are cute n fuzzy. i captured one unconcious and keeping him to myself. :3

Yes, please check your sound balance, etc. Otherwise, a fine job.
Thanks buddy, this was my first video so it's quite rough. Hopefully my latest stuff is more pleasing to your ears.+TheLoyalOfficer

agree entirely, and i ONLY speak english
But just how evil or what exactly a gnoll is differs on the the D&D setting or if its even D&D at all.
It's a shame, what WotC has done to Gnolls in 5e.
WHAT!?
YOUR GONNA HAVE TO SPEAK UP!
I play the Neverwinter MMO and one of the NPC's is a gnoll who is a harper spy.
Iv'e seen.... HORRIBLE... things!
This is about the D&D version? Or the Pathfinder version?
what i heard was interesting. But as i couldnt hear half of what you were saying i couldnt finish watching
Gnolls are daddies
In wich existing settings majority of gnolls are civilized?
Does Heroes of Might and Magic III game count?
They seem somewhat civilized in there.
song a bit too loud dude
Hyena creatures by there some kind of werewolf thing
So basically that hyena guy from The Island of Dr. Moreau. Okay
I thin Heroes 3 M&M took much inspiration from D&D
Many times. At least I heard so. As I remember even the creators themselves did actually say that it was their inspiration for many things.
It's a werehyena!
Bard, you forgot an aspect of Gnoll society. Gnolls are very often matriarchal, much like their animal counterparts, where the strongest female of a clan of spotted hyenas is the leader.
I’m the 722nd person to like
Let's be honest. Has anyone ever actually wanted to Play as the Gnolls?
Always
Yup. Got a roguebarian gnoll in my 5e campaign. Let’s just say he’s rough around the edges.
best fantasy race
I have a post apocalyptic themed Gnoll in mind, personally.
really struggled to understand the speaking - mumbled, no diction, very monotone, disappointing as wanted to learn !!
That’s all you could dig up? Stop joking!
Im like the bestiary comunity
you talk too low
I first learned about Gnolls in the Dungeons Dragons board game but haven't seen them much elsewhere.
You didn't played Heroes of Might and Magic III? :O
