Great video! One suggestion, when using the vortex for blowing up the nemo tensor, you should blow about 6 inches away from the hole. The reason is because from that distance a vortex is created that sucks in more air, allowing you to fill the hole thing completely in 1 or 2 breaths. The additional benefit is you are much less likely to blow mosture in, since the majority of the air actually comes from the sides as you blow.
Just watched quite a few of your videos. I appreciate your points of view and your experience. You put a lot of other backpacking channels to Shame keep up the good work.
@@basecampchris Those chairs are popular with motorcycle tourists too. Easy to carry almost anywhere. Heck I saw a video of some drone pilots that were sitting in them while they were flying their drones around.
Appreciate the video...a couple of suggestions however: I got the flexlite this season and love it except for the sinking feeling that you can get when the ground is soft. To fix that I made a pvc strut 3/4”x11” that snaps across the tips of the back legs. It adds an ounce but very worth it. The other suggestion is I use one of those drawstring backpacks for my sleeping bag stuff sack and for a day pack from camp.
Hey Chris great video, I just bought that nemo tensor insulated pad and love it. Another good idea is to use the Therm-a-Rest Z Lite underneath the Nemo for protection against sharp objects or even extra warmth in colder months

With the Nemo Vortex you are meant to blow about 6” away from the opening, due to magic the vortex will fill up with less breathes (and less moisture).
Base Camp Chris yeah give it a try, 6” away is the proper way per the instructions th-cam.com/video/xQfzaaVKlYc/w-d-xo.html, the magic is the Bernoulli Effect, as you blow it changes the air pressure and this sucks more surrounding air into the sack, so with only a few breaths the big bag is filled due to the multiplying effect.

Hey Chris, what are your thoughts on packing a hammock instead of an inflatable cushion and a pillow? I've been thinking about doing that and then looking around to see if there's some sort of bug net that I could string over myself in the absence of a tent.
The inflatable pillow and sleeping mat is a must for older campers. I like the extra comfort of a tall backed chair so I can nap if I want during the day.

Great video. Glad I stumbled across your channel. I’ll give that chair a try. I bought an expensive helinox. The center pole broke after using it a few times and the customer service was horrible. Won’t go that route ever again. Btw, where did you get the fish key holder?
I actually bought the wood pre cut like a trout and painted with acrylic paint. hooks came with it. Yes the Rei Air Chair is a good one as well as the Trekology YIZI GO Portable Camping Chair $39 bucks...stronger chair in my opinion...but weighs 2 lbs. versus the 1 lb. of the REI chair. So price / weight and quality are the considerations.
I have a similar wide brimed hat and i fall into an Australian accent the minute I put it on, which embarrasses anyone I'm with!😂 Really enjoy your channel!!👍
Helinox Ground chairs are amazing! If you haven’t tried one you are missing out on the best chair in the market. It’s cheaper than the REI Co-op chair, it is a touch lighter, but it doesn’t sink into the ground!!! Also it feels more stable. Try it out and see! It is hands down the best chair around
Thank Geoff! I actually have one in my studio for my next review with some other gear. Will be checking it out! Like it so far. It feels sturdier than the REI.
The main thing is having a fresh t-shirt ( micro fiber ) and underware to switch into...always makes me feel fresh. can wear the same pants fresh...switching socks makes me feel human again too.
Those chairs will sink into soft ground and dump you over backwards. I haven't done it yet,( well I have done the flipping backward thing but not the mod I'm about to propose ) but I intend to add 2"-3" squares of wood or plastic from an old cutting board to the rubber feet to have them distribute my weight over a larger area. I'm hoping that a simple wood screw down through the rubber feet into the squares will keep the mod simple yet effective and allow them to be removed for packing.
Thanks Daryl! yes the comfort items are now something to look forward to when I'm in the backcountry! Never had a chair before...not long ago I would not of imagined bringing a chair backpacking...So sorry about the summer fires in your country...I love Austrailia.
if you blow into the pump sack from a distance its much more effective. counter intuitive but its much easier to inflate when to blow at a distance of a couple inches from the opening. at least it is for me
somewhat...REI chair is 1lb/ my tent is 2.7 lbs/ looking at an Atmos 50 ( have an Atmos 65 ) looking at lighter sleeping bags...always adjusting/ upgrading here and there.
Easier than that, hold the pump sack away from your mouth and blow in it. The way it works is by using the air that follows behind your breath, you can mostly fill it with one breath.
blowing into the vortex pump for the nemo pad totally defeats the purpose of the pump. Also, the other reason for changing to a pump instead of blowing into the pad is that the humidity reduces the insulative properties of the pad.
Are you really suppose to blow in air in the air sack with your mouth? I thought the whole idea was to avoid moisture getting in the sleeping pad. Now it's getting in through the air sack instead. Just open it and pass it through the air to catch air.
