    The UI looks a lot smoother than I was expecting for the very small SoC bump. Positive signs.

      I agree! Fells butter smooth so far. Time will tell once I get more apps and stuff in here. I think the large amount of storage helps too, not constrained by 8gb like prev models.

      Fresh out of the box and after an update, the UI is actually OK but then it bogs down if you open up two apps

      OS doesn't actually support running multiple apps. It doesn't have all switching like Shield. I think this is by design since processor on most of these Google boxes aren't beefy enough to run multiple apps at once.

    Interesting that you got the set up TV process happen during the set up as the same didn't happen with ours. We have just set ours up and it all went swimmingly, and then stopped with a rotating circle which I assumed was also a part of the set up process, but the rotating circle just kept rotating. I disconnected the power to the device for one minute, reconnected the power and it went straight to setting up the TV (it was a little sluggish during the TV setup process), but once the TV was setup it is running like a Swiss clock.

    Fun to find your channel and follow along with your set-up process/first tests with the device! Been on the fence about replacing the FireOS built in on my TV, and it's been interesting seeing the discourse and comparisons to the 2017(?) NVIDIA Shield Pro box as still the gold standard (although lacking with its security updates at this point). Just got a Pixel coming from a long time iPhone user, so the Google Home integration is becoming more alluring as I ease into this ecosystem. Probably going to be a little longer of mulling on it and watching videos like yours! As a video suggestion for this type of medium between two devices, you could screen record your phone during the process and just shoot up a little overlay of it when you wanted to show something that was going on from the phone screen rather than from your facecam (although the focus and delivery was just fine here)! Again, thanks for sharing the experience for us here-excited to see you start popping up in my feed more!

  • @losinfinite

    I will say this. Its not a power user device. So if you need full control or are a gamer, Shield is still king. But if you are a google user, then this will be perfectly fine as your new set top box. Its streams well (especially if you are hard plugged in). It kind of just works. But isnt that what we want. It seems to be a step down from the latest apple tv as well. But that is more expensive. Also the google home integration is slick. I wonder long term how it holds up but the one i saw running and played with is plenty enough. Its kind of like when every was comparing fire sticks to shields 5 years ago. Again this device is not set up to replace a shield class device. it is an upgrade from chromecast OR people on fire sticks/roku sticks. Its segmented in between

    • @TechItBeforeYouWreckIt
      @TechItBeforeYouWreckIt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Agree 100%. I wish Google would make a box to go head to head with the Nvidia. Maybe even use the Tegra processor too? It could be $200 I'd buy it. I get that $100 hits the mainstream audience but how about a few options?? 🤔

      @@TechItBeforeYouWreckItLikewise. My shield does something weird every once and awhile but it's pretty solid. I would pay $200+ for a fully Google supported Android box with official 4k TH-cam, Netflix and such native that has all the current codecs and audio formats. I don't game on mine but I occasionally use Kodi and Plex. If you have a fully functioning Chromecast do you think it's worth the upgrade even if nothing is wrong?

    • @TechItBeforeYouWreckIt
      @TechItBeforeYouWreckIt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good question. Personally, I use HDMI auto sensing. It works pretty well with most modern TVs to automatically detect which HDMI device is active and switching over to it. But, if you need an input switch, you can still use the customizable button for that. You just lose any other functionality. Would be nice to have a double press function?

      The Onn 4k pro is an awesome box. I have a couple vids on my channel about it, check them out. I think the 4k pro has more options for power users. Most importantly the usb storage port. You're going to get a more guaranteed "Google" experience with the steamer and I do like the smart home hub. But besides those pluses it's hard to beat the 4k pro at half the price!! That help?

    Would've liked to see a comparison between using Wi-Fi and the included network port.
    If you're on the network port and you have a NAS, will it let you sideload Plex and view films/videos you have on your NAS/network? i.e. Can you add network storage or only use the local storage? Nvidia Shield and other devices will let you use a NAS, Google might not want to anger content producers so might not include that.

    • @TechItBeforeYouWreckIt
      @TechItBeforeYouWreckIt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well - you can def use the PLEX app if you have a NAS with Plex server running. Not sure if you can directly connect NAS storage to the device as a virtual drive. Doubt it.

      Honestly, I think a lot of it is about personal preference. I don't like the Roku software, I feel like you're very limited. Android is flexible, you can sideload apps, apps can do more. In terms of specs, you pretty much get what you need with this. You also get the smart home hub features with thread and matter. But if you're a Roku OS fan, go with the Roku. Make sense?

It all connected seamlessly because I was already setup on my Google home account. I'm guessing most of this functionality wouldn't work without the internet since Google home is very much cloud based.
