Inside the mysterious tunnels of Ybor City

At a construction site off East 6th Avenue in Ybor City, openings to long-forgotten tunnels were recently unearthed. Thoughts on their original purpose are, at this point, only speculation.
We explored a tunnel under Ybor City that some thought was an urban legend. We confirmed its existence last week. On this day, we got to see inside for ourselves.

Dennis Lehane has three novels following the Coughlin Family from Boston to the Irish/Italian organized crime gangs of the 20s & 30s in Tampa - specifically Ybor City...read his "The Given Day", "Live By Night" and "World Gone By"...in the l;atter two, the youngest son of the Boston PD's Thomas Coughlin, Joe, becomes the boss of a Prohibition era bootlegging, smuggling crime family and is introduced to the tunnels on his arrival in Tampa by one of the local gangsters...good reads...it was my first introduction to these tunnel and was unsure if they were an invention of the author or real...guess they're real...

No doubt the tunnels (which have similar counterparts in nearly every major city) would be used by bootleggers but it’s insane to think they were built by them. The cost would outweigh the benefits not to mention it’s much easier to sneak out hooch than to sneak in millions of bricks, excavated material, and a highly skilled workforce to build it all. So that begs the question why, when, and who truly built them. Don’t be too quick to accept the official narrative.
