      Agreed! I also, for the record, I strongly believe that Roberts is indeed Billy the Kid. I am very upset that he was never pardoned due to egotistical and prideful politicians not wanting to admit that William was never killed. Also, I believe that Pat Garret would never have killed his best friend.

      Estevez is their real name. Martin used Sheen because Hollywood was so racist, particularly back in his youth. Carlos obviously decided to grab some of his dad's name recognition. Emilio stayed true to himself and made it on his own merit.

    They are sworn in as special constables at 7:26. It was a practice in the 19th century and into the 20th where you could designate special police officers to execute limited tasks such as a special set of warrants. Once the warrants were served the constables would surrender their badges and return authority to the sheriff/marshall for the territory.

      I grew up knowing about Billy the Kid, the Lincoln County War, and all that stuff because my parents had those Time Life books about the Old/Wild West. My favorite? The Gunslingers.
      Then there was the episode of In Search Of about whether Billy was really killed by Pat Garrett or, since they were supposedly friends, Garrett let him get away and ended up killing somebody else. This led to the question of the identity of this old guy in New Mexico (I think) who pulled an Anastasia, claiming he was the real Billy the kid.
      There were some who believed him, but apparently the people who didn't thought he was lying because his eyes were a speckled blue but The Kid's eyes were a clear blue...or was it the opposite? So, the guy died and it was still a mystery. I wonder if they ever definitively found out the truth (don't feel like looking it up)?

    Just might be the best and most accurate in some ways of the life of Billy the kid.

  • @djikopgot
    @djikopgot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    I read a biography on “Billy the Kid,” and the Young Guns movies are about 70% accurate. All this stuff really happened. Hollywood changed some of the details, but the truth of “Young Guns” and “Young Guns II” is a part of why I always appreciated these movies.

    • @davesteller6301
      @davesteller6301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Closer to 30% accurate. They got some facts right, but took Hollywood artistic liberties on a lot of it. Still a great movie. In the film they commented that they thought there were 50-60 men in the house when their were actually 5. In real life there were actually over 50 men in the regulators. Doc and Charlie were married to sisters, and no they were not Oriental. John Tunsatal was killed in February, not January 1. Murphy was never shot during the Lincoln county war. Dolan was barely in this movie, yet all siurses say he was the main villain of the story. Also John Tunsatal was only a few years older than Billy. I believe he was 26 when he died. But it got one thing right. Billy the Kid was known in stories and legend to be left handed, based on the tintype photo of him. But the photo was in reverse, and he was actually right handed, which in the movie Billy said "I'm not left handed" and I believe it's the first Billy the Kid movie to get this right. Either way, it's a fun movie and one of my favorites.

    • @djikopgot
      @djikopgot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davesteller6301 Yeah, I don’t know the exact percentage, but they got a lot of the main events right. Billy was taken in by Tunstle, who did come from England. There was political corruption by Dolan/Murphy and sheriff Brady, who did everything to run the regulators out. The Lincoln county war was real. Billy did escape from jail a few times. One time shooting Bob. The regulators were trapped in a house and escaped, while having a shootout. They got enough right, while also changing a bunch as well.

It's a tin type which reverses the image, leading to the popular misconception that he was a lefty, since his revolver is on his left hip. But closer inspection of the Winchester rifle shows the loading gate on the left side.
      Since 2011, 2 other photos have been shown to show Billy, one of which is a group photo with none other than Pat Garrett.

If in two hours it inspires someone to read the actual historical accounts of what happened and remains true to the spirit of real people and events, I don't mind creative liberties. Movies are fictionalized accounts, not documentaries. They're bringing these stories to life. :-D

    This was a one of those movies that got panned by critics when it came out in 1988, but it was wildly popular at the boxoffice. The fact that it came out at a time when westerns definitely weren't a thing anymore, made that rarer still. & it's on my personal list as one of those movies that I've watched a gazillion times & still doesn't bore me. I'm glad someone finally reacted to it. Some future reaction suggestions from that general time period: Platoon; Batman; Beetlejuice; The Lost Boys, & Edward Scissorhands.

    This is one of my all time favorite movies but the second Young guns was even better. I could not see anyone other from Emilo Estevez play Billy the kid. He really nailed it.

    Yes, Billy the Kid played by the awesome Emilio Estevez was the Jock in Breakfast Club. He is also the brother of Charlie Sheen and both are the sons of the great Martin Sheen.

    one of the best films of all time classic .
    how ever it does not show all the truth of how much justice was lacking in there time
    and how they made a stand against pure evil this was not long after the American civil war
    and billy was loved by the Mexicans, Indians, Irish ,Africans who were being murdered by
    murphy and co

    First of the two best Western movies.
    It didn't actually get out of hand, just Murphy and John were competitors... A competition that escalated into a small civil war. In reality there were dozens on each side until the US Army intervened.

    If you're going to start going down the Westerns rabbit hole you'll have a long and interesting journey.
    Westerns can usefully be divided into two eras: Pre-Peckinpah and Post-Peckinpah.
    The modern Western film--gritty, violent, bloody, grimey--can be said to begin with Peckinpah's 1969 film, "The Wild Bunch" (though some might push it back to Sergio Leone's 1966 "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"). Before the 60s the motion picture code forbid the showing of explicitly bloody violence, among other prohibitions. That began to change with Alfred Hithcock's 1960 thriller "Psycho." By the end of the decade we had "Bonnie and Clyde," whose final shootout is still among the most violent ever filmed, and "The Wild Bunch."
    For B&W Westerns my favorite is Fred Zinneman's 1952 classic, "High Noon." Excellent script, wonderful performances by Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly, and one of the best, simple scores in all of film.
    For modern-style Westerns I'd certainly start with "The Wild Bunch," though it's not my favorite. It's hard to pick a favorite Western from the modern canon, but four that are very high on my list are "True Grit"(1969), "The Shootist"(1976), "Unforgiven"(1992), and "Tombstone"(1993).

    Yeah, this movie was pretty big when it came out. It was frequent rental from the video store at my house growing up.
    Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen (brothers), Keifer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Philips were A-list young actors at the time in the late '80s. Casey Siemaszko and Dermot Mulroney were up-and-comers (Siemaszko was in Stand By Me with Sutherland). The older main cast was big names, too, Jack Palance, Terence Stamp and Terry O'Quinn.
    Tombstone is another great western from a few years later, which also featured a lot of big names.
