You're forgetting the other side. Many jobs will be created in the auto industry and A.I. fields. It's a way of life, low skill jobs will be automated whether you like it or not.

Assuming that in the future everyone has autonomous cars, it is very likely that driving manually will be illegal. One of the main reasons that car companies are introducing autonomous vehicles is to reduce traffic accidents, numbers of casualties with the intent of increasing overall public road safety. Humans, on the other hand, are error-prone, so it's only a matter of time until you will no longer be permitted to drive manually.
O L i really cant see any competent government banning the actual act of driving. sure computer systems will no doubt prevent accidents and make roads safer but thats not to say that they cant fail. just like your phone can break at any time these automated driving systems can also fail at any time. for that reason you need a option to manually overide the automated system. what i thnk will happen is it will be mandatory for all cars to be equipped with automated driving but you will still have an option to drive manually

Think of it as a skill level. Level 1 can do that much, Lvl2 can do more, Lvl3 can do even more, Lvl4 can do even more, and Lvl5 could do everything. Edit: Like Level 1 would do auto-braking, Level 2 could stay in lane and switch lanes when you indicate + lvl1, Level 3 is lvl2 + speed regulation maybe, Lvl4 is basically full auto pilot, Lvl5 you wouldn't even need the steering wheel.

in the future no one needs a drivers licence anymore and u even dont have to buy a car anymore... u just order (with a app) a car and pay like 0,10-0,20€ per km and the system automatically distributes cars to locations where it is needed ^^ u can set a routine so the car comes 7 am to your house and after work it waits for u to carry u home... so basically citys will have giant parking garages where the cars wait for a order and charge...

This is inherently the issue. They rely on tech outside of the car, which means we need to put expensive tech on every road for this to work. Telsa relies on mostly cameras, which are cheap, and learns to drive like a human does, by observing the environment around it and making adjustments, without any external assistant to guide. Just like the super cruise, this tech is limited. Autopilot and other AI based driving systems are the future of autonomous driving.

30 years ago, Audi's were rust buckets and very unreliable and look at them now. Renault has come a long way too and now they have decent cars. Even Mercedes uses Renault engines in their cars now. Their new V-Class / Vito is in fact a Renault Traffic and the Citan is a Kangoo based model..... Every manufacturer has it's flaws but they all strive for quality these days.

Es DeeKay No. The V Class is not based on any Renault vehicle. Only the Citan is which is basically a Kangoo. The Vito and V Class are pure Mercedes products which can be seen in everything from interior elements to engines.
To be honest lightning bolts have actually very little energy in total. The intensity is extremely high but it is counted in milli seconds ! In the end the total energy is too small to actually be significant because of the very short time period. If it were harvestable we would have lightning farms :P

Actually Elon stated that cameras are enough for building a fully autonomous car while all the others in the industry rely a lot on LiDAR and he kind of hates LiDAR and has reasonable arguments to back up his opinion. Anyway, LiDAR has become a very important component of present state-of-the-art self-driving cars. We might need new breakthroughs to make it work with only cameras, I don't have information on whether Tesla already solved it. Let me know if you know about it. Otherwise, let's see what the future holds.

This is not impressive at all, other car companies do this shit in there sleep. The reason why Tesla is doing so well in this area is that they don't use mapped out areas that require endless work to set up, it simply reads it with cameras exactly how humans read with their eyes.
traffic jams aren't just caused by people though, to think it will solve that issue completely is actually stupid. The problem with peak hour for example is too many people on the road at once. Meaning we don't have the infrastructure to handle the influx of people leaving work at the same time everyday.
Thing is, if all cars were autonomous, there would be no need for stop lights, stop signs, or anything that would stop the flow traffic. There would also be no more idiots holding up traffic or (hopefully) getting into accidents. Everything will be more efficient, which means less cars would be on the road at one time since everyone would be getting home quicker. The problem with peak hour is that any little thing causes traffic jams. Just merging onto a busy freeway causes the entire thing to slow down. With autonomous cars, they will likely travel in packs of, say, 9 (for instance) and cars merging onto the freeway would add to each pack or create new ones. They would also travel much closer to each other since they would be driving as a unit creating more space. There would also be no slow-down since all the cars would be travelling the same speed (which may end up being faster than the current speed limit). No speeders and no slow-pokes. This would drastically change the flow of traffic and it should make it efficient to the point where our infrastructure could handle much more traffic than it does today. That's all a theory, of course. I'm not sure if we have any idea how autonomous cars will drive yet.

Look at the Google autonomous cars. I think they've only caused one, maybe two accidents? And the one I know about was because it was trying to navigate around some sand bags in the road and it hit a bus while going 2mph, lol.

Assuming that in the future everyone has autonomous cars, it is very likely that driving manually will be illegal. One of the main reasons that car companies are introducing autonomous vehicles is to reduce traffic accidents, numbers of casualties with the intent of increasing overall public road safety. Humans, on the other hand, are error-prone, so it's only a matter of time until you will no longer be permitted to drive manually.
AI don't need to be perfect, just better than humans, and it's not hard...

Think of it as a skill level. Level 1 can do that much, Lvl2 can do more, Lvl3 can do even more, Lvl4 can do even more, and Lvl5 could do everything.
Edit: Like Level 1 would do auto-braking, Level 2 could stay in lane and switch lanes when you indicate + lvl1, Level 3 is lvl2 + speed regulation maybe, Lvl4 is basically full auto pilot, Lvl5 you wouldn't even need the steering wheel.

This is inherently the issue. They rely on tech outside of the car, which means we need to put expensive tech on every road for this to work. Telsa relies on mostly cameras, which are cheap, and learns to drive like a human does, by observing the environment around it and making adjustments, without any external assistant to guide. Just like the super cruise, this tech is limited. Autopilot and other AI based driving systems are the future of autonomous driving.

When an(at that time) old combustion engine car drives by there will be confusion by those who were born in the era of electrics, and combustion engines are a rare sight from the rarity of petrol, when you've taken away the fuel, you've forced everyone to buy a new car, and reduced every classic and icon to lawn ornaments...this is not what we want. We don't need electric engines, what we need is a new fuel of some sort that'll work, or require minimal modification to work, in existing petrol engines, so we can keep the history & the technology that has already been mostly perfected, in place of the early stages of electric propulsion.

30 years ago, Audi's were rust buckets and very unreliable and look at them now. Renault has come a long way too and now they have decent cars. Even Mercedes uses Renault engines in their cars now. Their new V-Class / Vito is in fact a Renault Traffic and the Citan is a Kangoo based model.....
Every manufacturer has it's flaws but they all strive for quality these days.

To be honest lightning bolts have actually very little energy in total. The intensity is extremely high but it is counted in milli seconds ! In the end the total energy is too small to actually be significant because of the very short time period. If it were harvestable we would have lightning farms :P

Actually Elon stated that cameras are enough for building a fully autonomous car while all the others in the industry rely a lot on LiDAR and he kind of hates LiDAR and has reasonable arguments to back up his opinion. Anyway, LiDAR has become a very important component of present state-of-the-art self-driving cars. We might need new breakthroughs to make it work with only cameras, I don't have information on whether Tesla already solved it. Let me know if you know about it. Otherwise, let's see what the future holds.

Ofcourse, because the Tesla is about 2x faster. The Renault does 0-60 in about 5 seconds. The Tesla does it in 2.3 seconds... That is a humongous difference.

I think Renault wanted to make a commercial with this video because they didn't demonstrated anything new here. Tesla, at least, on its full autonomy video showed that it can stop on traffic lights, drive on poorly marked roads, stop on road signs, etc.

There is a massive difference between using LIDAR and CAMERA. Tesla is using Camera for perfection, which will take way longer but able to handle any situation.

@@docdisco42 LOL, people think this is the car driving itself. This is just a marketing scheme. It's literally a mapped out area that the car has probably done hundreds of times. This is not impressive at all, other car companies do this shit in there sleep. The reason why Tesla is doing so well in this area is that they don't use mapped out areas that require endless work to set up, it simply reads it with cameras exactly how humans read with their eyes.

Thing is, if all cars are autonomous, there will probably be no traffic jams as the cars will be able to drive much more efficiently than we can.
traffic jams aren't just caused by people though, to think it will solve that issue completely is actually stupid. The problem with peak hour for example is too many people on the road at once. Meaning we don't have the infrastructure to handle the influx of people leaving work at the same time everyday.
Thing is, if all cars were autonomous, there would be no need for stop lights, stop signs, or anything that would stop the flow traffic. There would also be no more idiots holding up traffic or (hopefully) getting into accidents. Everything will be more efficient, which means less cars would be on the road at one time since everyone would be getting home quicker.
The problem with peak hour is that any little thing causes traffic jams. Just merging onto a busy freeway causes the entire thing to slow down. With autonomous cars, they will likely travel in packs of, say, 9 (for instance) and cars merging onto the freeway would add to each pack or create new ones. They would also travel much closer to each other since they would be driving as a unit creating more space. There would also be no slow-down since all the cars would be travelling the same speed (which may end up being faster than the current speed limit). No speeders and no slow-pokes. This would drastically change the flow of traffic and it should make it efficient to the point where our infrastructure could handle much more traffic than it does today.
That's all a theory, of course. I'm not sure if we have any idea how autonomous cars will drive yet.
The irony is that autonomous cars drive well on empty n straight roads. In traffic, they will get u behind the bars in no time.
Sarvesh Parakh That would be true if the other drivers were human, and even then they only get into accidents because of human error. The autonomous cars will rarely cause accidents themselves. Look at the Google autonomous cars. I think they've only caused one, maybe two accidents? And the one I know about was because it was trying to navigate around some sand bags in the road and it hit a bus while going 2mph, lol.

Tesla is actually at level 3. Level 3 is navigation based autopilot.
