Heartfelt thanks to Shappi and Bettany for doing such a good job at making this mammoth topic not only accessible, but extremely entertaining as well. We hope you all like it!

rather lightweight and pretentious. BH unfortunately comes across as a waffler. it's one thing to be a historian, another to be a philosopher. reminded of another waffler, initials SF...any guesses?

WOW, your critique of Brittany Hughes is severe. Bettany Hughes has never said, or wrote, or pretended, or intimated that she was a philosopher as far as I know.
She is in my opinion an excellent all in, comprehensive, and contextual historian, in whatever subject she presents and/or chooses. She makes her history subjects come alive, and gives them a vitality for this age. She has a seductive alluring voice and she has a pleasant, friendly demeanor that makes her particularly suited to these medium. By all accounts she is also an excellent writer of history.

Socrates and the Buddha were both from the Individualistic/Intimate/Personal Indo-European, indeed "Western", approach to religion/philosophy. "Asia-Minor" was also Indo-European and thoroughly Hellenized by this time as part of Magna Gracea. We only think of it as being "Eastern" now, in a post-Ottoman world. Confucious was entirely Collectivist with almost no concern for "individual philosophy", or the "self" as we think of it in the West.

The Voltaire Lecture? You mean Voltaire who was a Deist and who extolled the virtues of The Quakers in the first six chapters of his Philosophical Letters? You mean THAT Voltaire? You are listening to Bettany Hughes talk about Socrates Confucius and the Buddha ? Does that mean you are reassessing and reevaluating your incredibly restricted and narrow view of what Humanism is? Does it mean you have left the Dawkins cult ?
