Great question! Unfortunately, it's pretty hit or miss on the quality of the shells. For this DSi swap, the shell feels pretty similar to an OEM shell. The same goes for the GBA SP shell. However for others, like the DS Lite, or the GBA, the shells definitely feel much lower quality. The plastic isn't nearly as rigid, so the body has a lot more creak to it. The same goes for the button pads on most aftermarket shells. They usually are a bit mushier-feeling. If you can, I'd definitely suggest trying to reuse most of those old pads if you can. Of course, it's still leaps and bounds ahead of having a busted, unusable system. But definitely not near the same quality as an OEM shell!
I know this is super late and probably not helpful, but I got a very similar if it the same shell and the quality of the shell itself is surprisingly nice. Nice feel, doesn’t scratch that easy, feels better than the original (in my opinion). Only bad thing (as many other aftermarket shells) is that some of the stuff may not fit properly. My L+R bumpers didn’t fit properly so I just used my old ones, which actually just ended up looking cool as I now have a mixed black and white dsi
The bottom part of my shell also didn’t close completely. Thought maybe I didn’t line something up right but I was wrong, it just simply didn’t fit. But it’s not at all noticeable as it’s a very very close fit and I put a clear case over the whole thing anyways
There's no specific place I buy them from. It's usually just a random search online, that usually lands me on Amazon, eBay, Aliexpress, or some other random but reputable sites. Most aftermarket shells won't have the same quality of the originals, so I just usually try to find a place that has what I want, and hope for the best!
How are the Dpad's on these aftermarket shells? I got a japanese DSi and the dpad is absolute dogshit, It just sits way too low and is impossible to hit two directions at once. I had to flip the rubber pad but now the pad clicks loud as fuck and is super stiff.
It's not bad. It's better than having something broken that doesn't work at all! I think if you didn't compare it to the original, you wouldn't think it was bad at all. But to be honest, it's definitely not as good as the original. There's some "slop" in fitting, and how well the Dpad rotates and pivots. But definitely good enough to be considered usable and enjoyable!
Hey! Followed your instructions step by step but my screens aren’t working and I’m trying to troubleshoot, the ds is turning on, the screens just don’t work right now, do you know which of those attaching things goes to the screens?
My also doesn't turn on. When I press the power button, it justs blink the blue light and turn off, without show any image on the screens. I started today close to 7:30 pm, and finish right now, just to break my DSi😭😭😭😭
Please, help me, my friend. My DSi doesn't turn on after the switch of the case. When I press the power button, it just blinks the blue light, and turn off, without show anything on the screens. 😭😭😭😭. I just follow all the steps and take a lot of care, just to break my beloved DSi😭😭😭😭😭. I am so sorry to have this idea of switch the case of my console😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
you completely skipped the top assembly I was following step by step but you installed the new top screen without showing us and assembled pieces idk how you assembled and stuck with a dissasmebled dsi smh
Thank you, my friend. Thanks to you, I was able to complete the mission safely. My only regret is that I started this work on a weekday night

@@TheBrokenPast Thank you so much for the information!
@@TheWeazelNews You're quite welcome!
You need to use silver/copper cleaning solution to remove the corrosion.
Wow you is a magic man 🧙♂️, very very fantastic video !
Wait...I once fixed a DSi
And I ordered from the same Chinese brand, how did you get the black power button??

Great job on the swap! I am going to do this here soon for a customer. And this will be very helpful! Thanks for the videos!
were you successful?
I thought about doing this, but after I saw your video, I dont wanna do this. Just too much for me. Guess I'll just play DS games on my 3DS.

If it's anything like the DS Lite, check the displays whether they are hooked up properly.
