    They weren't legendary in 1981...it was the beginning of them becoming legendary. Oh, and they play 2-to-3-hour concerts as well. I have seen them twice and both times they were brilliant! Also, they are in the Rock and Roll HOF!!!

      They were already legendary in Belgium. Werchter Festival was their 18th gig in Belgium in 2 years (since 1979), incl. several with a 2000-3000 capacity. 🙂

    Early on, The Cure was struggling to find their own space and you can hear the influences in this piece - there is definitely punk influence; there's a bit of Joy Division in the sound and that bass could easily by played by Peter Cook. One the other hand The Cure was, even back then, "painting atmosphere" with their music. You can call it goth, you can call it whatever... It is still glorious!

    • @crose7412

      The Cure were unique not influenced by Joy Division at all. Two ground breaking bands that as a 18 year old I rocked to. 77, 78, 79, 80 were glory years. Went to ratshit after. These were easily the best years, band after band came to the fore, Magazine, Cure, The Fall, Undertones, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, X Ray Specs, Rezillos, Simple Minds, Joy Division, Human League, Pistols, Crass. All Brit bands.

    • @jamesnolan4412
      @jamesnolan4412 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickchristian8195 it's common knowledge that Robert Smith was originally leaning into The Buzzcocks and early Elvis Costello.. much later when he composed The Walk, it leant heavily into New Order's Blue Monday, a fact not lost on Robert as he's always liked Hook's bass lines ( they're friends too) and as for Joy Division, Robert has even played the riff for She's Lost Control midway through an instrumental section of A Forest paying homage to Ian and the band. They were often in the same billing at their early gigs so I personally wouldn't say they weren't at all influenced. One can be influenced and inspired and still compose unique music.

    • @eboethrasher
      @eboethrasher 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jamesnolan4412 I mean, they were contemporaries influenced by similar bands and with a mutual admiration, experimenting with sounds around the same time, a time when a lot of post punk bands had fairly similar tones. Severin played basslines higher on the neck as well, it wasn't only Hooky ho did so. And as for the OP saying the bassline could have been played by Hooky, he wouldn't have played a root only bassline much after this time period. The bassline on this song is simple roots. The guitar part is actually more in line with something Hooky would play, but on guitar. And it isn't like he has some sort of exclusivity on playing the way that he does. As for influence, Robert just liked their more minimalistic style, vs what Dempsey was doing on bass. Siouxsie was dark, too, so he got as much influence from, or more, his time with the Banshees than he did from the few times Joy Division opened for them.

    My girlfriend's favorite band in college. She said that his voice turned her on. We went to a show and it was madness. She wanted up front and it was crazy and we had to clear out. Not mosh pitting but bodies smashed on to each other in a rush as soon as the band hit. This was around 1993. I just started getting into them too. First "new" music for me, I'm a sixties/seventies fanatic (best period of music imo ;)
    Funny story about drawing out the song bc i've always know them to do that with this song live anyway. Maybe this is the origin. It's a quick 3-4 min song on the album but would stretch to 20 min later. Very cool :)
    Thanks again!

  • @Grithron2

    1. On bass, the brilliant and aptly-named Simon Gallup - like Peter Hook and Paul McCartney rolled into one
    2. Robert is inconsistent as to whether this song is a metaphor for some turbulence in his long, not always happy, relationship with Mary Poole, or just a reminiscence of his childhood fear of becoming lost in some local woodland
    3. This song originally was in the 6-7 minute range, but (as you might already know) this version of the song presaged a later trend. The Cure always did like to improvise, and this is one of their big jamming numbers. From the last leg of the 1984 tour, right through to the midpoint of the 1996 tour, they would ALWAYS play extended versions with adlibbed vocal parts and multiple guitar solos. In the early '90s A Forest averaged at 12-14 mins, but the longest one I know is of is a 17-minuter on an infamous 1998 night when Robert had taken LSD and was also knocking back the chateau-my-god..with predictable results.

    In 1986 I was 12 and in the 7th grade and I remember one day all of the “preppy” girls crying and I heard a couple say they were gonna kill themself. I asked what is going on and finally someone said,” there’s a rumor going around Robert Smith is dead.” I live in Maryland and they were huge. I remember we used to skateboard fly ramps and we’d always have a boombox with us and it either would be playing Depeche Mode’s Speak and Spell album, The Cure, The Cult, Black Flag, the Sex Pistols, or The Violent Femmes first record. Those days seemed to last forever! We were young and we knew it, we were “cool” and we knew it. The 80’s were a great time for adolescence and then by 1990 I was 17 and Grunge was coming in and we were partying (just drinking and smoking) and those couple years were a blast as well till about 1995 and it was all over.

    Quite brilliant how they chose to make the song longer by drawing it out and adding unnecessary guitar solos etc. It feels like that specifically target Palmer. I mean 70's rock guys like him had solos that lasted half a day, punk and early goth typically had songs that kicked you in the groin and were gone again in less then 3 minutes. Love how they did it though.
