AMT cars have improved a lot and are now more efficient than their manual counterparts. You might be thinking of CVT or Torque Converters. Those automatics provide lesser mileage than manual. My Alto K10 AGS provides more mileage than all of my friends who drive manual Alto/S-Presso. Even Maruti themselves claim that AGS provides slightly higher mileage.
