  • In this Microsoft Access tutorial, you will learn about using an option group. Option groups have many uses, including selecting an option from a list. In today's example, we're going to use it to track which step we're on in a series of procedures for a medical patient.
Emily from Southaven, Mississippi (a Platinum Member) asks: I have a series of forms and procedures that need to be performed for each of my patients, in order. How can I keep track of the current step I'm on? Right now, I use a notes field but it isn't very efficient, especially when I might not see the patient for weeks and need to figure out where I left off. Is there a way to have some sort of indicator or system that will automatically help me keep track of where we're at?

Is there a way to make the step number field return the description of the step it's on within the table?

I usually use the value 0 for 'non defined' or 'unknown' values and I change the color of the option selected.

It didn't give me the option of storing them to a specific field, the control source list is also empty in the property sheet. Kindly give me some advice for whatever error I am having. Thank you! Lovef your vids!

Hey Richard, had a random thought today that it would be great for you to do something that touches on how computing power is used for access databases in a network environment. Obviously on a local system the machine cpu will do all the grunt work but what about on a network where the back end is located on a server and front end resides on local user machine? What happens locally? What happens on the server? What should users and devs consider? I thought this would be quite interesting to hear you talk about this.
Actually would be a good way to launch to things MS is doing to keep the product alive (e.g. relationship to dataverse, powerapps... fabric?)
    Hope you're well!!

Yeah I talk about this in my Developer classes in a few different lessons especially when I'm talking about the benefits of SQL Server but a few other people have asked me similar questions in the past couple weeks so maybe I'll put together a short video on it.

Please do not spoil valuable time in video with topic 'Using Option Groups in Microsoft Access' to show how to format elements in the form - that is clearly offtopic and basic knowledge, so it belongs into a different video! However it would have been nice to show how to use the value from the Option group - I searched it in the label instead of the group-frame....

Like I always say, if you don't like my videos, there are plenty of other ones to watch on The TH-camz. I find repetition of topics VERY important for learning. If you don't like it, skip over it. I'd rather a dozen people be a little bored than have ONE person get lost.
