This era of basketball doesn't take pride in defense because the culture focus is offense. The quickest way to take a players confidence and pride is defense. Even with offense being the dominate of the two, I still see players can't use both hands which is a major target to take a players confidence. Even though Rob beat an inferior player, he was still exposed as being right hand dominate and lack confidence in his left hand.
My first assignment for my young players is to identify whether your opponent can use both hands or do they favor one hand. Once that's determined, you can game plan how to guard them.
Do you ever recommend the Marcus Smart type of defense for 1 on 1 situations? Because Smart always forces his man one way and when he tries to change directions Smart doesn't turn his hips, he just runs in front and blocks off the change of direction.
