Despite his family's obsession with pure-blood supremacy, Regulus grew disillusioned with their beliefs and joined the Death Eaters, followers of Lord Voldemort.
Regulus had an admiration for Voldemort and became a Death Eater around the age of sixteen. However, his loyalty began to waver when he discovered Voldemort's mistreatment of the Black family's house-elf, Kreacher, during the safeguarding of a Horcrux. Regulus felt compelled to take action.
In 1979, Regulus devised a plan to retrieve and destroy one of Voldemort's Horcruxes-a locket. He created a duplicate locket, left a note for Voldemort, and instructed Kreacher to guide him to the real Horcrux. In the treacherous cave where the locket was hidden, Regulus commanded Kreacher to replace the Horcrux with the fake locket and escape while he drank a deadly potion as a distraction.
Regulus's sacrifice led to his demise as he was attacked by Inferi while trying to obtain water from the lake. However, Kreacher fulfilled his master's final order and switched the lockets, though he was unable to destroy the Horcrux. Regulus's courageous act marked a turning point in his life, as he defied Voldemort and attempted to rectify his past mistakes.

Evil yes, but he is one of greatest wizard of all time
People compare him to Grindelwald in movies. I prefer Voldemort for the most part. The movies showed him in some ways more powerful than in books. He is more intelligent in most ways, used more powerful magic, invented his own spells, finished Hogwards, never been captured ànd managed to avoid defeat from the hands of Dumbledore despite the latter having the elder wand. Voldemort was in his 70s during the second Wizarding War. Grindelwald was defeated in his 50s. Tom Riddle hid his crimes way better as a student and didn't get expelled compared to Grindelwald.
Wisdom, divination and magical knowledge go to Grindelwald. Grindelwald was able to shield his mind from Voldemort later in life, despite being imprisoned for over 50 years, knew more about the world and could see the future to some extent. Voldemort failed to properly interpret the prophesy and got confused over the ownership of the Elder Wand. Due to him being a seer, Grindelwald can be aware of certain things ahead of time, as well as having a greater intuition and perception. "There is so, so much you do not understand," Grindelwald told him in books. I am 1000% sure he knew Voldemort's horcruxes.
Grindelwald chooses to be for the people rather than for himself. I am pretty sure Grindelwald chose Hallows over Horcruxes, mainly because he never sought immortality and wasn't like Voldemort. Grindelwald definitely knew about this piece of dark magic and what it does to a person, but he never pursued it; he wanted to enjoy life...
Grindelwald was the most powerful dark wizard before Voldemort, but I have a feeling that he peaked magically by his own desire, not by talent limitations, since books don't say much about him.
Voldemort is more powerful, both in books and movies, due to him being the main antagonist. The Dark Lord is very underrated here on TH-cam.

Also, on screen, Voldy performs more advanced magic. Black smoke out of his manuers, flying, his multiple ways of apparating and dissaparating, surviving water orb, destroying windows in the ministry and knocking Dumbledore out, not being hurt by glass in the ministry, how he possessed Harry and then became invisible, dissiparating out of ministry, surviving electrical shock while flying in Deathly Hallows 1, destroying the protective shield around Hogwards, getting into multiple wizards' minds at once. As far as we can tell, Grindelwald doesn't actually possess Legillemency in movies since he needed help from Quinee.
Speaking of the shield around Hogwards, that is the most powerful feat of any wizard in movies. ( Voldy doesn't actually say a spell, and him not even being the true master of the Elder Wand. Not to mention all of the protective charms that were placed, both by the Harry’s allies and the four Hogwards' founders. That was the nuke of all spells.)
Grindelwald's feats of magic that impressed me were healing Credence, showing his vision of the future and controlling the blue fire circle inside before it he let it out. ( Protego diabolica, of course. The most powerful part about it was controlling it when it was circling around right before he dissaparated and unleased the fiendfire.)
Books never give us enough about Grindelwald's magical accomplishments. But overall, we could say that Grindelwald is the most powerful entity in the HP universe due to his massive following. Politically, he is the most successful person in HP for sure. In all-out war, he could win against Voldemort or Dumbledore, really.
If it came to down to the overall war between the two, ( in their prime) I believe Grindelwald would have gone a great job hunting for Horcruxes completely by himself even better than Dumbledore, due to having access to his own precognition, skills in black magic, overall knowledge and other intuitive abilities of his own. (Dumbledore's cursed hand would have been avoided.) Just by looking at Voldemort and knowing how his name translates to French, it will be obvious to Grindelwald.

@AnnaBellaChannel 😄Although I am no longer interested in HP universe, ( after a 21 day fast and finding Christ) I am glad people like my comment. Magic (which I demonic) does exist in real life. I had seen dark shadows after using tarot cards and felt a super unusual exastion after using them... Not to mention I had some health issues in my teens that no doctor was able to identify. ( It took me years to realize that it was my far aunt cursing many of us.)

I still like the purpose of Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s ideology better than Voldemort. Voldemort was kind of plain psychopath aiming for power while Grindelwald and Dumbledore were truly doing things for greater good.
I would argue Grindelwald was more powerful. The elder wand was truly his while it wasn’t for Riddle. Equally Voldemort struggled to control Britain while Grindelwald brought wizarding America and Europe to the brink of complete collapse, all without needing something like a Horcrux to do so

Rowling did him dirty by making him Evil even before he went to Hogwarts, he should’ve started out as child no different from Harry (an abused Orphan who wants to help people) that slowly devolved into Monster, it would’ve made me love his character even more.
Yeah JK basically wrote him as a born psychopath instead of giving him an proper character arc. Harry could’ve genuinely relate to him in 2nd book not the persona Tom wanted to show him.

One thing I hated about the movies are the scenes where Harry and Voldemort are dueling and the ridiculous scenes of Harry blocking green-shot spells from Voldermort (a.k.a Avadakedavra). THAT DID NOT HAPPEN IN THE BOOKS. Harry is a great wizard but can never measure up to Voldemort's dueling skills.

Just thought of that when thinking about how the monster Voldemort is really doesn't have a purposeful goal that makes any sense. He doesn't make purebloods a priority, he hates muggles because of his father, he's obsessed with power & immortality.
Which is why Regulus Black is so iconic imo, he died believing that Voldemort would meet his match when he is mortal once more. I wish they made Draco Malfoy carry on his mission. Also becoming friendly to elves which would do make a certain curly haired genius griffindor very interested
