So different from when I lived in Tokyo during the nineties. At that time, Tokyo was one of the world's most expensive cities. My rent was 90,000 Yen per month. My English Teacher's monthly salary for a 40hour work week started out at 320,000 yen per month but I topped out at 390,000 yen per month after 5 years.
I love this video. I feel like people don't often get into this amount of detail without dragging it out for much longer than seems necessary. This was such a terrific video, and very encouraging to someone like me who prefers to have a good understanding of what the day-to-day responsibilities before committing to something like moving to japan. Very excited to see more!
This is an excellent video and helped me decide what I want to do with my life. As a 29 year old without a degree and only ever worked retail, I’ve decided to attend college and get a bachelors in English. It won’t be for the money but for my own personal growth. Thanks for this one.
Thank you for sharing your video great information. I’m a senior on fixed income, but my childhood dream is to visit Japan and I’m going to do that so I will be watching some of your videos to try to figure out how I can still come and eat laugh out loud, but really so grateful

Cool, I've been an English teacher in Vietnam since 2016! I think it's a lot cheaper than Japan, both for housing and daily costs, you can always keep it in mind as an option if you want a little more financial leeway and freedom.
Thank you, I am actually of half Japanese ancestry but live in Hawaii. The cost of living here is ridiculous and I can’t afford to be fully independent with a full time job. I am a disciplined saver though and was able to save over $300k in cash outside of my retirement accounts and I am 33 yo. I am thinking of relocating to Japan and just use the dividends from my savings to take care of my cost of living. With an income focused portfolio I can earn around $2,000 USD a month in dividends alone. I don’t think rural Japan is for me but I would settle for a mid size city like Sendai or any of the surroundings prefectures of Tokyo such as Chiba to save cost. I’m not really looking for a glamorous life, I just want to settle comfortably stress free!
I love how careful you are about managing your money! I want to look for an English teaching job in Japan next year and enjoy the high standard of living like you said in this video.
Japan is a wonderful country if you know how to take advantage of it and appreciate the good and rare things here. It's the current hidden gem of the world.
Great video, it makes me feel less crazy seeing a video about managing your finances as a foreigner on a realistic salary. You did a great job of breaking everything down and that's a very nice way to budget.
Glad to see a fellow Trini making it out there in Japan, i feel like ive almost never encountered someone locally who stayed in Japan for anything outside of businesses or job related stuff, just short term trips . Thanks for this really good video! I'm planning to come to Japan in september, to start my 2 years master's degree in space engineering at Kitakyushu. Unfortunatelly, if I'll not able to get a scholarship, I'll be on my own with a loan I'll take to sustain myself for those two years, so I did various calculations on "how much it will cost to me", based on the info I got from the university and other students that are enrolled in that university at the moment. But it's always good to get more and more info about expenses in Japan and advices on how to economicaly behave.

Hello. I’m Canadian living in southern Shikoku Japan for over 12 years now. You are right. People typically do not come to Japan for the money, that is for sure. They come to experience the culture, food, history, etc. I have earned the same entry-level salary for 11 years which has never been increased beyond about $25K/year with very limited vacation time or holidays.
Shout out to Shikoku! It seems to even apply to fresh graduates or job switching despite experience here. The system is what it is, but I don't think its advantageous for individuals trying to grow financially very quickly.
@@lajuaninit Thank you! The bubble economy ended in Japan over 30 years ago now. So really, Japan has been in a recession ever since. The only reason I stayed was I was able to buy a lovely, traditional Japanese-style home on a mountainside surrounded by forest and a beautiful view to the south for a fraction of the cost of a similar property in Canada 🇨🇦. I grow a lot of my own fruit and vegetables all year here. My time has finally come to make a change though. I really outgrew Japan about 5 years ago... lol!

you're rich! LaJuan. I live in a small coastal town in Chiba-ken. no car, not an extravagant lifestyle, and though everyday costs are rising fast this year, it's still surprisingly cheap living. I spend about 10 grand a year. yes, 10! certainly less that 1.5 mill ¥. it amazes me.
