    A very interesting clock. I admire the extra care you take to “tread lightly” when manipulating the clock parts.

    What a fascinating clock. I love unusual movements. I had no idea flip clocks were that old. I've always thought the flip clocks were those electric things from the 70's

    • @jamesmartin5370
      @jamesmartin5370  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Many were used for desk clocks and in public buildings, they haven't been documented or written about as much as other types.

      Years ago we had my dad's old electric one from the 40s. The problem with the American made clocks is the voltage has been gradually increased since the clock was made. Voltage used to be 110 volts. Then by 1960 it was increased to 115 volts. In the 1970s it was increased to 120 volts that we use today. As a result the old motor burned out.

    • @jamesmartin5370

      @@dfirth224 I have an old 1/2 hp 110 volt motor my grandfather purchased new form Sears and Roebuck from the 1920s, it still works.
      Its a piece of electric history now, cast iron end caps and mount, at about 14" in diameter, its heavy and huge, delivers less power than a moderns one.
      I had never thought about the voltage change and negative effects on consumer appliances, thanks.

    • @melody3741
      @melody3741 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dfirth224 that's not really the voltage and was more likely its age or maybe poor tolerance? Well made items from that time still had a relatively wide voltage tolerance range.

    I found your channel by chance and I'm fascinated by the fine work you do. It certainly wouldn't be a job for me. All these little and delicate parts, I would probably break or loose a few while trying putting everything back together!
    I didn't know that there were mechanical flip clocks. Thanks for sharing this video!
    I just wish you would have shown more of the movement. For me (who knows nothing about clocks) it looks more like that of a pocket watch than like these of the mechanical clocks you usually repair. (Which again makes me wonder why the English language has two completely different words for clock and watch, as it's actually the same thing, just in different sizes.)
    However I'm not sure about the clock being from the 1940s. "Made in Western Germany" wouldn't have been used before the war, and probably not before the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949.

    • @jamesmartin5370
      @jamesmartin5370  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clocks are not made to wear so they don't have bands or other means of attaching to ones body.
      Documents I found claimed this style was made from 1940 to 1949.
      As you mention anything marked West Germany would be between 1949 and 1990 so 1949 is a much closer date.
      Thanks

    Fantastic video. Takes a lot of effort to make it look this good, with all the close up work. I was thrilled to see an expert take this down. That little clock works must have been a German work horse. I’ve got the same flip clock made by Köhler, a Köhler car dash clock with that mechanism as well as a reproduction Plato Clock (a 1970 Horolovar) that uses the same works. Now I have enough know how to be dangerous! Thanks so much.
