I’ve noticed as an American that no one ever wants to talk about Italy taking slaves into the 1920’s or Belgium committing untold colonial atrocities or the German colonial genocides or point out that Portugal and Spain took / killed far more slaves than any other colonial power. No, no one wants to talk about the prodigious Islamic slave trade “legal in some states into the 1970’s” or that the Africans themselves had culturally, religiously and indeed economically engaged in slavery long before any European involvement. No one wants to talk about the statistical fact that most African slaves were enslaved by and sold by other Africans. No, no it’s all America and Englands fault. Forget the fact that the English ended the west African slave trade single handedly at extreme cost of money, resources and lives. No, no it must all just be that the Queen’s to blame even though she wasn’t in power or even alive at the time. Bless the Queen and all our good, faithful friends throughout England imo.

Indeed ...because that doesn't fit the narrative. The Belgians were unspeakably cruel in the Congo. I reckon also that it can be safely said, that if the British Empire had extended through Central America, then there would be far fewer rotten and murderous countries there.

Don't forget the barbary slave traders raiding the coasts of Spain, England, Ireland and beyond. Cervantes (author of Don Quixote) being one of their victims. In fact, prior to the British leading the abolition movement slavery can be found in all corners of the world and perpetrated by all manner of peoples.

No Britain was bankrupt after WW1 and had also made promises such as to India to grant independence if it fought on Britain's side - in fact Bose had approached the Japanese and allied with them to free India of British oppression. That was the first army of India that is recognised by Independent India and they and the widows all received pensions unlike those who fought for the Brits. Britain had not only racked up a huge debts owed to the USA but was bankrupt and insolvent so it DEPENDED on loans from the USA. After the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre Britain was proven to be immoral in the eyes of the World and the US wanted to dismantle all rival empires and made the UK its lapdog - it refused to sign the cheques Britain needed unless they gave up their Empire. The other new superpower that emerged the USSR was indoctrinating former European empire colonies to demand independence and sponsored many independence movements - they even sent Che to Africa to start Guerilla Wars for independence - they would claim as always to be be fighting for "Democracy" when in actual fact their end goal was to instal a socialist tyranny! So a combination of US Imperialism and USSR Socialism ended "official" colonialism.
Slavery STILL EXISTS worldwide - the Islamic slave trade predates the Atlantic one and continues. Thanks to Obama and Hillary Clinton Libya which descended into civil war when they sponsored the assassination of Gadaffi now has an active slave trade of kidnapped people.
The American abolitionist movement started in 1688 with the Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery in Philadelphia. Its the first petition against African slavery in the States and much predates the British abolitionists! Of course they didn't get any results until they formed/ joined with the Republican Party and their candidate Abraham Lincoln literally fought to free their slaves!

Bullying, no. That was outright panic-induced damage control. They thought a historian would be a raging leftist who would spew their talking points for them. They never once imagined that he'd actually be educated on the subject and speak truth rather than pander for points... because when it comes to American historians, they aren't actually educated in history... they're educated in cultism. They have sociology degrees and other degrees which give them knowledge of how to manipulate thoughts of weak minded individuals.

They secretly yearn to be opresses because all the luxuries of freedom has made a lot of people feel like they dont belong anywhere. And instead of being nurtured into fields where they can contribute to society and mankind they find their joy in looking for opression where there arent any. Its a result of a failed state not taking advantage of what they have and not shaping the future of their people. Humans still follow a tribe mind mentality. If its not political it takes its shape in something else like football hooligans or anywhere they find a sense of companionship.

I’m so embarrassed as an American that MSNBC allowed that exchange with a British historian to air. How disgusting, inappropriate, rude and disrespectful to do on a day of morning- just for a minute stop trying to stir up more negativity and acknowledge that the world lost an extraordinary woman who put her service to her country before herself and never made her own opinions public- especially in a world now where everyone thinks that their opinions matter- you’d think these people on media and professors were acting way more like royalty than Her Majesty ever did. I’m so upset that I even saw that. Truly disgraceful-
Of course they need ratings.. that’s the only thing I can think of t
to explain such bizarre behavior…. on the other hand SkyNews I appreciate your point of view of US. I feel like I get a clearer picture from downunder - actually- it’s on point since I feel like everything has turned upside down . But honestly it’s just the media here and the social. Yeah, while I get that the British guy is rightfully upset, the correct response to his comeback about "ending slavery first" is, our country did it in less than hundred years from our founding and full rights were established for all people in less than two hundred.
For a country created in an era where slavery was rampant across the world to do that is impressive but you won't hear it told that way nor will you hear the finer details and facts that prove just how our founding fathers abhorred slavery and their efforts to curb and stop it. The issue of slavery was much like abortion is now with one group wanting it abolished, the other claiming abortion is their right. So we can clearly see how complicated the slavery issue was back then in America even before our founding.

However with rulings that cut away at slavery laws a loophole was formed in the law that allowed slave holders to free their slaves upon death, and that's exactly what many of our founding fathers did.
Not to mention the laws that many of them made that helped cut slavery down and slow it's spread. There's so much context that's not taught to people about slavery as well as an agenda to demonize our founders and country. I say this as someone whose great grandmother was a black African and both her and my grandmother had children by British fathers, and I have wondered and hoped that there was love in the relationships, but if those British men hadn't been in Africa then myself, my mother, my grandmother and the rest of my family on my mother's side would never have existed. "George never bought or sold a slave in his life. He never invested in any of the companies that did such a thing. He signed legislation to abolish slavery."
On 7 November 1775, during the American War of Independence, John Murray, Lord Dunmore, issued a proclamation that freed slaves of Rebel masters. Dunmore was the last Royal Governor of Virginia, appointed by King George III in July 1771. Dunmore's Proclamation inspired slaves to escape from captivity and fight for the British.
Yet, the Americans insist on lecturing the British on the evils of slavery even though their civil war was nearly a century after the British peacefully started to discontinue their involvement in the slave trade.
