I thought the rare and vintage Nerf Hyper Sight Big Bad Bow, Monoblast and Cyber Stryke Ratchet Blast blasters would simply be quirky relics of the past, but they surprised me when I tried them out and learned about their rich modding history. I saw the ratchetblast in the thumbnail and was about to comment "be careful" but RIP too late...
The reason they break is because of the plastic they used. All the glitter in it slowly wedges the plastic molecules apart, making the plastic extremely brittle, as you may have noted. Unfortunately the decay is accelerated by both light and oxygen 💀
People in the transformers community call this GoldPlasticSyndrome. It apparently happened in a lot of older hasbro toys. This isn't even the only nerf brand blaster with the issue, the issue appears in the Defender T-3 (in the priming handles and catches... great...), the silver chains for the Razorbeast (which were thin to begin with 😳), and the Electric Eel, which, like the ratchetblast, has the bad plastic for the entire shell 😵. I myself have the DT3, and can already see stress in the priming handle. I own two electric eels as well, which both have at least one area where plastic has been chipped off. Ouch.
As soon as I saw the ratchet blast I instantly thought of you and figured it might snap. 😞 Not many survivors and they will continue to go down.

I still own all three of these and, exactly as you might guess, the Ratchetblast is the only one that has broken. The other two are remarkably hardy in their construction (ignoring the cosmetic elastic strings on the BBB)
two words "pop it lock it and watch it rocket" sent a wave of repressed memories of me sitting at my house playing ps2 with my friend while my parents argued over the tv they were watching in the background

Core memory unlocked; I had a RatchetBlast growing up, and thought it was the coolest thing ever-especially with the hand guard removed.
Have I been shot by a time machine? This is quite the blast from the past!
Just have to say that Terminator 2 came out in 1991, six years before the Cyber Strike line. I don't think it was a direct influence on the line beyond the way it influenced later sci-fi action movies and the sci-fi aspect of the 90s in general.

Me and my brother had those ones with the hand armour, they were a lot of fun but i cant remember if they were good. Chances are we lost the darts right away and just pretended with them anyways lol

My BIgBadBow from 98 is still solid and with the release of MEGA XL darts its got a GREAT replacement ammo which is PERFECT 50 foot plus shots easily out of the thing with XL darts

The ratchet blaster is based on ratchets blaster from ratchet and clank.
I used to play mech arena, but my account got deleted. My favorite mech was the ares because it just has a cool ability and if you add the right guns, it’s unstoppable

I used to have a secret shot and it was kinda sick when I surrendered and I shot then while my hands were up. the 90s were awesome
thats not how you prime the final blaster. i had one. i never flinged it. i just grabbed it with my other hand and ratcheted it and then shot.
I never had a problem with my rachet blast breaking, I must have been very lucky.

I was a poor kid inna 90s so never had any cool old ones. But as a Dad with kids now, we have a shit ton of blasters lol. I host nerf wars now. Fun to hurt my kids and their friends with the pro models. Hahaha
Yeah it's interesting to see adults in certain hobbies because they couldn't afford toys as kids but now that they have more expendable income, they can get the stuff they missed on in their childhoods!
