Much appreciated my friend! All 3 are great in their own way. I do like the versatility of the Auto Kamado and the O.G Akorn more. The size of the 980 is a great selling point tho
Awesome James!! Sounds like your Father's Day is already epic!! Congratulations!! You're gonna love it for sure. Appreciate you coming and checking us out! Thank you🙏🏾🙏🏾 Stay tuned.... much more still to come👀👀 Cheers James🍻🍻
That's what we were saying. But in all fairness, the O.G Akorn's temp did shoot up above 300⁰f for a bit. I got sidetracked and I guess I caught it a bit too late. They were still good, just a little dry and the sauce burned a bit. I still ate them tho🤣🤣 Cheers Joseph! 🍻🍻
Great test. I have the Masterbuilt Gravity 800 and love it. I use half splits / charcoal with a chunk in a raised position in the ash bin. Lots of clean smoke. Hard to beat a gravity.
@JoeAnshien no doubt! But it would still be cool to run them both side by side. I'm actually affiliated with Char-Griller but would love to do an actual comparison of the 2
Nice job on the rib test! I am not surprised your man child chose the rib from the 980. That rib cooked on the 980 had juice running off it when you took it out for the rap! Great video! 🙂👍
Thank you Jeffrey! Definitely was a fun and interesting cook! I will be doing something similar in the near future. Thanks for checking us out! Cheers! 🍻🍻
Another great and informative video. The taste test from manchild was hilarious. I enjoyed every second of this video! Cheers!!! Nice channel intro too.
That's going to depend on if you like charcoal cooking or pellet. I have both kinds and love them both for different reasons. I mainly use charcoal tho, so that makes it a bit easier for me to decide. Keep me posted on what you decide Chase. Cheers🍻🍻
Very nice test. I’ve had a pellet grill for years but looking to go back to charcoal. As much as I like the size of the 980, the lack of fuel efficiency is kind of a deal breaker. I’ve heard the auto acorn can run for 20-24 hours on just one full of charcoal. So I’m leaning that way.
Thanks for checking us out! They are both pretty efficient running grills. I can easily get 14 hours in my Gravity 980 but it also depends which fuel you decide to run on. I generally burn lump from The Good Charcoal Company and no problems here. You'll love either unit tho.... good luck and Cheers to you! 🍻🍻
Thanks Jason! I've never seen beef cheeks here in PA. They do look awesome whenever I see dinnertime make them. Maybe I'll try to order some🤔🤔 Thanks for checking us out Jason! Cheers🍻🍻🍻
I have heard the thermostats in the OG acorns will not be accurate after some time. I wonder if the that could be why that grill seems to have been hotter even though the temp readings were all close.
Thanks for checking us out Bob! I can't speak on the Masterbuilt Gravity Fed... I've never used it. I know it is a popular smoker as well so it can't be bad. I can speak on the Gravity 980 and the new Auto Kamado tho! Love them both! The Gravity 980 is a big, beautiful beast! The Akorn Auto Kamado is a smaller beast in its own right. Still learning about the Auto Kamado, but so far, I'm looking what it's putting down! Good luck bud and please let me know what you decide on! Cheers Bob! 🍻🍻
Thank you Mike! The difference in appearance was mine blowing! It sucks because the camera does them no justice... but WOW!! Thank you for checking us out bud! Cheers🍻🍻
My 980 temp runs about 50-75°cooler than what the temp controller displays. I was very frustrated with it for several cooks before putting an independent temp probe at grate height. I can then use the actual temp to dial up the controller to where I want to run the chamber. That was disappointing but with the LSS fan mod, and upper rack extension its been great for brisket, ribs, and chicken.
Great video brah, just ordered my auto Komado yesterday! But damn homey, you look like your busted up like me🤣. I'm rockin' 2 knee braces and an elbow brace right now! Much love my brotha, just subscribed to you channel. 🤘🏾🤘🏾
This helped me out, i have the akorn but my boss wants to hook me up with a unique bonus and im between auto kamado and the gravity pull. I have a stick burner and a weber also. The OK Joe rebel 1200 seems interesting to me too. Great video!
Thanks for checking it out Xavier! I hope whatever direction you go in works for you! Please let me know what you decide. Also, there are plenty more books on my channel showing the Gravity 980 and a few more of the Auto Kamado. I never used an OKJ so I can't speak on those. Cheers bro🍻
Wish your taste tester would've taken a swig of the MA immediately before tasting the 1st rib just to have everything super close/consistent as far as prepping for each bite. Thanks for the video.
I never even thought to look at the coals afterwards. 😂😂 I was anxious to get in and see those ribs. But I can almost bet they're all pretty much the same. They are all efficient grills but, I still want to test more on the Auto Kamado. So far tho, I'm impressed
@@ramtuff111 I think the gravity feed is the best of several styles because of its temp diversity and ability to control smoke. After watching your videos I would buy it any day over a pellet grill.
It would be interesting to see this same exercise while using a grate level thermometer on the Akorn instead of the notoriously inaccurate dome thermometer. I'd guess you were cooking at a grate temperature closer to 350. Those were likely some dry ribs.
Nah... not dry at all. Now if the heat deflector wasn't in there I'd agree. The ribs were great. Just the one rack was running a tad too hot. I still ate all of them😂😂
I went from a akorn jr to a 980. Did a 15lb pork butt on a pan with a rack. Went 275 for three hours, sprayed it down went another hour, then wrapped it in butcher paper left it on overnight. Took 16 hours. Rested it in a cooler for three hours, shredded it and added a 2to1 (1cup sauce to 1/2 cup a/c vinigar)ratio of blues hog sauce to apple cider vinegar. Best pork ever for me. The neighbors are buying me bags of charcoal so I'll cook three next time ha ha. Could really taste the hickory wood. Had about 2 chunks for every pound of charcoal for the first three hours. Twas amazing. Doing again for tomorrow night for a Sunday feast. Havn't mastered the ribs yet. It's wild how they are beating down the doors for the pulled pork though! Love the 980 .
Awesome review Howard!! That should be put on Char-Grillers page!! I'm glad you are enjoying the 980.... it's one helluva machine for sure!! Keep it up bro, and smoke on! Cheers🍻🥃🍻🥃
Awesome experiment! Looks like the OG had some brown sugar caramelization from over cooking in higher heat (happened to me yesterday) so they turn out not so great . Still wanna get the AK, thanks for the video and i'm gonna sub to follow more great cooks!
Thanks for checking us out Paul! And as far as the cook went...I let the O G get away from me. I was spoiled with the automation of the other grills and that was on me😂😂 Can't go wrong with any of these units and if you can grab the Auto... do it bro! Good luck and Cheers! 🍻🍻
Which uses the most charcoal? I've noticed that the Akorns don't seem to get much of a smoke ring. I would assume that means less of a smoke flavor. Correct? Great video!
Hey Michael! Thanks for checking us out! As far as the charcoal use is concerned... none of them really use too much charcoal at all! They are all very efficient with great heat retention. Smoke rings are more for looks than flavor. Just because you see a smoke ring doesn't guarantee more flavor honestly, just really pretty to look at😉😉 Plenty of smoke flavor from both Akorns. You can't go wrong with any of the 3 and love them all. Good luck on whichever you decide! Cheers🍻🍻

I am looking at buying a Kamado unit but the ceramic ones are so so much more expensive than the Acorn. Kamado Joes run $2000 - $3000. i like the idea of that auto fan Acorn, but reading a ton of reviews, they will fail at some point. Then what??? You can't just pull the fan and go back to the old system. Now, I am think the regular Acorn Kamado for what? $330... My thought is that your cook had to have had different temps and the regular Acorn meat looked to be underdone??? Maybe the older Acorn seal was worn and no longer tight???
